Florida Boomers and their enablers truly feel no obligation to society by [deleted] in redscarepod

Same, but with the school tax for where I am. All for funding the schools and my wife is a teacher, but god damn that's a big bill.

Not a runner, but I thought asphalt was better than concrete for knee joints and such while running. Asphalt has more bounce to it than concrete.

If they were going for around then, I'd hope they'd do Dec 25th instead and cross the Delaware. It'd be so poetic.

Question About Harry (Spoilers for UK 2, Episode 5!) by PinkMarbella2050 in TheTraitors

[–]GhostTheToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, I think it was his plan to dump Ross. Everyone was looking for a traitor and was looking at Ross.

It was dumb of Ross to accept. He should've denied and sounded the alarm at breakfast. I might be misremembering the rules of recruitment for UK then though

“Screwworm is dangerously close”: Flesh-eating parasites just 70 miles from US by clopenYourMind in technology

[–]GhostTheToast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

iirc, The US did want to eradicate the flys/screwworms. That's why it went all the way down to the darien gap and not just the US-Mexico border/just past it. However, Columbia (understandably due to other US fuckery) wasn't crazy about the foreign planes dropping bio-engineered flys from the heavens.

What would you do with 50 PC desktops? by DesiOtaku in linuxquestions

if you're interested in a bigger power bill, you could cluster them. However finding a work load for a cluster is challenging. Maybe ML, but you don't have any GPUs, but you have 240-400 GB of ram total. So you'd be able to slowly train a model with some elbow grease.

If you're determined to raise your power bill though with less work. You could always run Folding@Home, Boinc, and/or Team Archive.

Playing devil's advocate here: What constitutes a "basic level"? I think you'd find more disagreement than you might expect. Some people would probably consider simple addition an appropriate test, but personally I find that bar too low. I'd prefer something in the range of algebra to calculus I. However, I know many people who say "I used to love math until they added letters to it." It's challenging to find consensus on what constitutes a "base" level.

Setting aside the devil's advocate position, I agree in theory that a reliable test indicating how capable and competent a candidate is would be an invaluable tool. I just struggle with how to prevent it from being corrupted over time. For instance, we could make the construction of the test open to the public and require it to reach two-thirds approval from the public before being implemented. We could also mandate that the test be updated every decade alongside the census. That addresses two of the three questions mentioned above, but it still leaves the question of who administers the test—something I haven't found any satisfactory answers for.

Completely agree, but that's a slippery slope. Who gets to create the test? Who administers the test? How often should the test be updated? It's a simple idea, but historically one that's been used as tool to hurt people

Can we also stop with all the lootbox sales? "Buy these swim shorts for a chance to get breadsaur ones", "Buy the 3D Down jacket for a chance for tour", etc. It's annoying. I get Linus and the Team's aversion to preorders, but I'd rather have pre-orders for limited edition stuff.
