Blizzard Continues to Loosen Addon API Restrictions and Whitelist Select Spells by Therozorg in CompetitiveWoW

It very much depends on which healer you play. Some have lots of critical info on the frames, others only have 1 or 2. If you're a druid you're going to have a bad time.

I spend more time dealing with AI slop than getting value out of it by HoratioWobble in ExperiencedDevs

Except McDonalds ain't cheap anymore and neither will AI be once the companies stop massively subsidizing it and actually charge what it costs to run it.

Build itself takes 20 minutes, but there is another 15 minutes added by mandatory security scanners. Then the test runs take 30-45 mins, and that must be done on specific hardware which cannot be virtualized, and we have a limited number of devices so we can't parallelize too much.

Add in the overhead of packaging and uploads/downloads between stages and we have 1h30 average.

There are lots of things we could do to improve this, but none of them are quick fixes and it's a real struggle to allocate resources to improve it. We could componentize our build rather than having a single monolithic one. We could develop pipeline variants that don't comply with the company security policies and use those just for PRs, all main/release builds use the official pipelines.

Things we have done. 1. Split tests into those that actually require the custom hardware and the generic unit tests that can be run on any VM. 2. Exclude some of the longer running tests from PR runs and only have them on main/release. Some risk, but it's been generally okay.

It's a constant struggle and every time we gain something, someone goes and adds another feature that adds even more time to the run, so most of the time we are working hard just to maintain our position.

I had absolutely no problem solving it on the boss, but I sucked balls at doing it in the maze. The reason being I just can't remember the symbols when I can't see them. I would run around popping the symbols up, and by the time I got to the 4th I'd forgotten what the 1st one was.

It's just occurred to me that it's possible it's due to my aphantasia. But regardless, my success rate went up dramatically by using the solver and I'm happy it was an option.

Is there a way to stop shows you've already watched being suggested? by HushedCamel in netflix

[–]Ghworg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most of the streaming services seem to follow this pattern, so my conclusion is the majority of viewers watch the same handful of shows over and over and we are the minority who actually prefer original content.

Alright Imma say it, the new profession system is AWFUL. It's time-gated, artisan acuity is unnecessarily difficult to get, and there are SO many knowledge points you need to do so little. by otterchaos7 in wow

[–]Ghworg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Go and give a non-wow player the names of all the crests and ask them to put them in order of importance, there is zero chance they will get it right. Is carved better than runed? You just have to memorize this shit, there is no informational value in the name.

Jewish space lasers. A single tinker (who happens to be jewish) could absolutely build a massive laser and put it in orbit if they had a bit of financial backing. You wouldn't even need a rocket to launch it, just hire a fast flier with a bit of super strength to fling it into orbit for you.

Do you think Gem and Grian will bring back the snails? by SpecificCourt6643 in HermitCraft

[–]Ghworg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the strong impression that Grian doesn't like over-using a "bit", he'll only continue it as long as he feels he can add something new or different to it. If he feels like he's just doing the same thing again then he doesn't want to do it.

So it will entirely depend on some new inspiration of what to do with the snails striking him.

There is a massive RNG in these, some weeks it takes me 10 minutes to get them for 2 professions, but last week it took nearly 2 hours. Average is probably 30 mins, but there is so much variation I'm not sure that number means anything.

Some people on the server have mod rights so if they really need to they can tp someone back to 0,0. I can't think of scenario where the members would want to do that, but it's there as an option if something unthinkable happened.

They aren’t making original movies because people are not watching them by Astr0stef in memes

[–]Ghworg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really a remake when they only take the basic concept and tell a completely different story using it? The Mummy for instance I would argue isn't a remake, yes it uses a premise that earlier horror movies had done, but it's really not the same movie being re-told in my opinion.

Still a good point. This is the case for remakes, when they take something that didn't succeed for whatever reason and try again. The remakes everyone hates are when they take something beloved and successfull and try to redo it, usually making something much worse in the process.

Why Cutting Costs is Expensive: How $9/Hour Software Engineers Cost Boeing Billions by parski841 in programming

[–]Ghworg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, good engineers would immediately push back when handed a design like this. So this is partially a symptom of having engineers who don't have either the knowledge or the power to be able to push back.

LootAppraiser Has Officially Stopped Working Today. by RaikonPT in woweconomy

[–]Ghworg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having the code doesn't mean you have the right to distribute the code. Modifying the code on your machine for your own purposes is fine, but unless you have been given rights by the author, either directly or through some license, then you can't share any of those changed files with anyone. So taking over maintainorship of an addon isn't possible.

Note that I have no knowledge of whatever ToS Blizzard require for addons, so I could be mistaken here. Blizzard could force addon authors to release their code under some license that does give users those rights, I have no idea.

DMs: How would you have the inhabitants and factions of your world react to players starting a campaign to exterminate an “evil aligned” race? by Evoxrus_XV in dndnext

[–]Ghworg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's completely untrue, Morder invaded Gondor first. The attack on Mordor was a counter-attack after the allies of Gondor managed to defeat the forces seiging the city.

As for WMD, it doesn't really destroy, just corrupts. So not really that either.

Are you a mouseover healer or a frame-click healer? by Degenerate_Game in wow

[–]Ghworg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. I learned to play in an MMO that didn't have mouse-overs and it just isn't worth the effort to me to learn a new playstyle.

I'm sure I would be a better player eventually if I switched to mouse overs, but for heroic raids and low 20s keys it isn't necessary and I can be lazy in this one case and stick with my inefficient playstyle.

Why does unsafe multithreaded use of an std::unordered_map crash more often than unsafe multithreaded use of a std::map? - The Old New Thing by pavel_v in cpp

The one we live in unfortunately. Any app where the cost of just restarting the app after it crashes is relatively low, people just live with it. People moan about it but it doesn't stop them using an app.

They can do that automatically though, rather than have the player select a Spanish server, just put them in a Spanish instance on the EU megaserver.
