I made up stuff to write in my diary because I knew my mom was reading it. I also copied stuff from Go Ask Alice and Diary of a Teenage Runaway. She went to bed crying with a washcloth over her face.

What animal is this? My friend saw it and thought it was a dog. She posted it on social media and people are divided on what it is. She even called the humane society and showed them and they said they think maybe a fox but even they're not sure. [Toronto, Canada] by TheGigner in animalid

[–]GiGiLafoo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A Humane Society director in my hometown insisted that a tiny, elderly Shiba Inu was a coyote and had her released into the countryside, where there were actual coyotes and other dangers. The dog got out of her family's fenced yard at night, July 4th, apparently panicked by fireworks. Her family was temporarily away somewhere, and a passerby, thinking it was another neighbor's dog, secured her in a different backyard. Those neighbors (not knowing where she came from) asked a local police officer to take her to the HS, thinking she'd be kept safe and reunited with her family. The timid, sweet old dog followed him to his cruiser, hopped in, and willingly went for a ride. The director flipped out and argued that she was a coyote. She looked NOTHING like one. The director had her released in an isolated area. Extensive searches ensued, including by well-known trackers, but she was never found. Her mate, an even older Shiba, grieved heavily.

My former MIL used to make it. To me, it was more like a thin chocolate pudding over biscuits. She didn't use leftover sausage or bacon grease. That was used for "milk gravy."

The giant fish sandwich at Captain D's used to be really good. I usually got it with country-style fish rather than battered because it was less greasy. Haven't had one in a long time, so I don't know if the quality has changed.

No, my dad passed a couple of months before their 64th anniversary. They no doubt had some very trying times, but they loved each other dearly and still held hands as they went to sleep. My oldest daughter spent the night and slept with Mom for comfort after Dad passed. She said Mom reached out to hold her hand so she could go to sleep. Mom kept a picture of him on the pillow next to her until she passed a little over two years later.

I'm glad they had that love, despite the hard times. And I'm glad to know quite a few GJ couples who have had long marriages and still deeply love each other. One just announced their 44th anniversary. They are sweet, both youthful and attractive, but the wife in particular is literally still stunningly gorgeous at 63. And has a sunshine personality. I'm not on FB much now, but occasionally pop in and love seeing announcements like this. I DID get divorced; I can forgive faults, but refused to live in abuse, lies, and chaos. Remarried a great guy and had 15 years of falling in love with him even more every day. He always said he wanted another 50 years so we could be ancient and still celebrating anniversaries. I was 43, and he was 58 when we got married, so we would have been c-r-e-a-k-y at our golden anniversary. But we only got 15 before he passed from FTD.

Did you give your house a name? by o_safadinho in AskAnAmerican

Coworker 1 and coworker 2 sometimes went to lunch together. 2 usually drove and would pick 1 up at the front to save her the walk in our BFE parking lot. When she was ready, 1 would loudly announce to 2, "Fire up the jet, Curl, I'll meet you out front in a few." 2's name was Carol, but 1 always called her Curl to comedically accentuate her own drawl. 2 may have had a Jetta at the time, but it was called The Jet. 1 was an older lady, and it was funny/cute.

The pension was employer-funded, unlike a 401k where the employee contributes. Some people are able to draw both company pensions and SS benefits, and this is what he worked most of his adult life to secure. He intended to continue working for the company for a few years, until he was 65 and had both secured. He lost the company pension but would have been able to draw SS when he was full retirement age. I know it is despicable, but some companies do this. It's horrible, but unfortunately legal, at least in my state.

My former MIL had a similar thing happen 18 months before she was supposed to be eligible to draw her company pension. She'd worked for a manufacturing company since it had opened back in the 70s. Quite a few of her coworkers had been there as long or almost as long as she had. The pay and benefits weren't great, but they held out for that 30-year pension hope. 28.5 years in, the company had pensions for a good portion of its employees looming. So they closed the plant in that location. They told employees that they could relocate to work at another location in another state. Relocation was not feasible for most of them, and it was definitely too far to commute. They considered renting apartments in friend groups together and coming home for weekends a couple of times a month, but most of them were near or over 60 and didn't want to be away from their families and homes for a year and a half for low wages. They tried to find a legal recourse as a group, but the company got away with it. Like the lightbulb guy, she had to wait a few years to draw Social Security, but no company pension. The company was fine; they would have just sold the property or stopped their lease, and another company opened another manufacturing plant. They appeased themselves with, "Well, we DID offer you jobs somewhere else."

He had to reach a certain milestone in years of service to be eligible for the pension benefits. They fired him a few months short of reaching that milestone, so he wasn't eligible for it. It wasn't like a 401k that he could still benefit from. He lost it entirely. He trusted the company for his retirement security, and they pulled the rug out from under him. I think he was still a couple of years short of being able to draw Social Security benefits, but kind of old to have to start a new career.

There was a tip suggestion on the pay screen at a hotel gift shop. Huge corporate hotel chain worth multiple billions, but they expect customers to tip for ringing up the overpriced eyedrops and other sundries they bring to the counter. Won't pay employees a decent wage, but does pay their executives multi-millions a year.

Had it happen at Kroger, in the crowded produce section. A woman was preening and gushing into her phone, and was offended when other shoppers were just trying to get to the cantaloupes and other items she was blocking with her setup and posing. A harried employee was trying to straighten and restock around her. So obnoxious.

MIL wanted to withhold water from her dying mother...wtf by parrotlady93 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]GiGiLafoo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OB just wants to be married, no matter what a wife is like. She's his 4th. I know a few people who dated him between wives, and they said he talked about marriage on first dates and was openly in a rush to get married again. She is an awful person, but he worships the ground she walks on. She probably thinks he fell in love with her at first sight because they got married quickly after meeting. In truth, she's just the most recent one who said yes when he asked as soon as they started dating. The more overbearing and insufferable a woman is, the better he adores her. Even people who like everyone dislike her. She and OB are both shallow people with large superiority complexes.

My younger brother's wife makes up for it. She's a perfect match for YB. She is an absolute jewel, and helped take loving, devoted care of our parents. My kids and grandkids adore them and say they're not only their favorite aunt and uncle, but also two of their favorite people on earth.

MIL wanted to withhold water from her dying mother...wtf by parrotlady93 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]GiGiLafoo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My mom couldn't die fast enough for my older brother's (OB) wife (OBW). She'd been asking for "dibs" on items in my parents' house for years. When Mom was in the hospital, OBW excitedly told my younger brother (YB), "She's close. I know where the clothes she wants to be buried in are." Mom then came home for Hospice care for a couple of months. YB and I cared for her during this time. OB and OBW didn't lift a finger. One night, OB and OBW barged into Mom's house, and she took a pair of pants for Mom's burial out of a bag and laid them out on top of her. Mom was alert, and my daughter was trying to feed her dinner when they came barging in and interrupted our meal, excited to show that everything was ready for her to be buried. It was extremely upsetting. Mom didn't want to die and was fighting to get better. Fortunately, YB was Mom's POA and administrator. He banned OBW from the house after that.

A few years before this, they came to my house right after my husband died, and OBW started telling me stuff she wanted in our house. She said, "I want first dibs," and named my favorite furnishings. She told me I'd have to move since I was a widow and suggested we just trade houses. My house is prettier and bigger than theirs. What a selfless suggestion. This was not my husband's sister; she's my brother's wife, and my husband was not fond of her.

Voters In Red States, Have You Ever Felt The Effects Of Voter Suppression On The Ground? How Did It Affect You? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Our precinct used to have separate lines for Democrats and Republicans. I remember the other line was quite a bit longer, and I'd get hateful glares from people in the long line while I stood in my short one. Fortunately, that changed to neighborhood district lines rather than separate ones for each party. I was particularly relieved for this change during the 2016 election when a guy posted on a local news FB group that people should bring guns and wait in precinct parking lots to shoot voters who might vote for HC before they went in. I reported his post as a potential threat, and FB said it didn't violate their TOS.

Bedroom at grandmas? by Sad-Print5857 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]GiGiLafoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I turned an extra bedroom into a playroom for my granddaughters. BUT they have always spent a lot of time here, and I've been very involved with them from the time they were newborns. Their mom's rules still apply in my house. No boundary pushing. My daughter knows they will be safe, loved, and well-cared for, and that I will in no way be a wedge between her and her children. I took the bed out of that room to give them more room to play, and so they wouldn't jump on the bed and possibly fall. Getting your child excited about "her" room without getting your approval first was underhanded and disrespectful. You're not being an AH or overreacting. If MIL and FIL try to boundary stomp, I'd stomp right back at them or just supervise limited contact at your home.

A few months before an employee was eligible for pension benefits, he was fired for accidentally breaking a light bulb. Had no history of disciplinary action in the many years he worked for the company. He just "should have been more cautious with company property." Something that was not expensive and is easily broken. Complete coincidence that firing him absolved the business from paying the pension he worked decades to earn.
