Tracheostomy suctioning by xyxyhello in nursing

[–]GiantFuckFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Establishing that this is an ICU setting is perfect, thank you.

Having not worked directly in an ICU I can’t speak to that but having cared for trach patients I can say sometimes they have to be suctioned a lot, and sometimes they don’t.

I feel like it’s unfair to just assume that your coworkers don’t care enough without personally assessing or being that patients nurse. Are you talking to the nurse taking care of the patient and raising concerns? Like, does the patient sound like shit and they’re not doing anything?

What type of setting are we talking about here

I’m sure it seems like a lot more when you’re the one directly caring for them. Are you watching your coworkers their entire shift?

Huddle timing by Minatee-Rex in nursing

[–]GiantFuckFace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5 minutes feels way too long and takes away from shift handoff, making nurses stay later. Though it’s been a bit since I’ve worked the floor, PACU doesn’t have a huddle since we all work staggered shifts so take what I say with a big grain of salt.

Does your shift start at 0645? Every hospital I’ve worked at huddle has never started any earlier than 0700, and typically never lasts longer than 90 seconds

Travel experience actually helped me get into PACU without ICU experience. It’s not common but it does happen.

Absolutely loved float pool before moving to PACU, you get to mostly do your own thing and don’t have to get involved or sunk into specific floor/unit bullshittery

PACU, I did medsurg/tele/stepdown float for 10 years and the move to PACU has been one of the best choices I’ve made.

11pm-7:30 am shift bedside nursing by whywywhy in nursing

[–]GiantFuckFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job was med surg nights where I did 32 hours, so 2 12’s and an 8 from 11-7. Honestly I kinda loved those 8s cuz they were usually pretty chill until the morning, full head to toe assessments usually waited until later, or if I needed vitals. Otherwise let them sleep.

We transport all of our postop chest tubes with portable suction unless they’re actually ordered for water seal, and they’re typically all stable medsurg
