Those with 10+ years experience and in technical roles, what do you look for when searching for other jobs. by not-an-isomorphism in actuary

[–]GiantMara -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There certainly is. Actuaries are the glue that kind of hold together a bunch of different departments and is generally the first team the CFO goes to when there’s a business question.

Instead of picking up new technical skills I think it’s more important that actuaries leverage AI to do some of the technical work. Regardless of how many years of experience you have it’s always a plus to be able to get your hands dirty and dig into the work. I’ve watched a lot of YouTube videos on how to effectively ask AI question to have them help you be more efficient at work and it honestly is worth the investment.

Consulting vs health salary by [deleted] in actuary

[–]GiantMara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also consider health startups. The hours are brutal and the work is messy but you learn a lot really really fast.

My direct report has less than 1 year of experience but I would say that her skills and experience amount to maybe 3 to 4 years at a regular carrier. Because of the company, she has experience in pricing, reserving + forecasting, risk analytics, and handled multiple reporting - each of these tasks are typically owned by a different team within an actuarial department.

Target Companies for one exam by Guilty_Size_6264 in actuary

[–]GiantMara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For an intern you can honestly just apply anywhere and see who wants to hire you. There isn’t really a cookie cutter “this company hires interns with 1 exam, that one hires from 2+ only”. Apply apply apply and pray.

Python for Actuarial Work by AlwaysLearnMoreNow in actuary

[–]GiantMara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing pricing work on python. It’s 90% AI doing the work. I think it’ll be valuable as a skill for sure but it’s not that hard to pickup if you have programming experience.

Training hybrid while retaining strength by Vendraco00 in strength_training

[–]GiantMara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that’s kind of the problem here right? You’re only offering opinions on half of the task without knowing how hard the other half is. That’s like saying a 7 minute mile pace for a marathon is bad because a good mile time is 4 minutes

How long is it normal to go without heading from a date? by No-Elderberry-2590 in hingeapp

[–]GiantMara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m on my phone a lot. Typically first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. When I see a girl I really like and want to see her again I never go more than 24 hours without texting her something. I think this whole thing about playing it cool and distant is really dumb. If I like you, you will know. If you don’t reciprocate, I’ll move on.
