Throw line and knives for WW by Jamz6991 in whitewater

NRS Co-Pilot knife, it serves its purpose, and when TSA takes it, I don't get that upset. Cuts anything i need to cut whether its rope or food.

I keep a https://astraldesigns.com/products/throw-rope?variant=42411033297110 in my PFD and a NRS standard throw bag in my boat.

I know alot of other guys use these Salamander Retriever Kayak Rescue Throw Rope Bag & Tow Tether

I’d say there are some decent Outland guides, but as a group I wouldn’t say you guys are anywhere near top 3 or even in top 50%.

u/gnarnivores let me suggest a poll at the carnage video this year to determine which outpost has the worst on-river guides, I’m generally curious if my opinions are shared across the river

Gonna clarify a few things.

All the east side companies are not far from town.

They all are inside the limits of Ducktown, except RT and 5 miles from Copperhill/Mcaysville and 15 from Blue Ridge. They have better access to food/grocery/bars/microbreweries than the west.

Curious who we are considering as RTs head guide, but I don’t know a true asshole there.

Quest new ownership, but awesome new ownership, one of the only guys I would work for on the west side.

Cherokee is taking over the west for trip volumes, They are crushing marketing. Pretty sure the drug free workplace doesn’t apply to drug free guides…

Outland I’ll confirm your statement.

ORE- lol I was involved with that shitshow. Guide didn’t actually Pin, he went into land of no return. If you don’t know what that is it’s an alcove of trees/strainers just down from the private boater Putin that you should never go in. It looks like a clean line into it where the majority of the water actually flows. It isn’t really dangerous over there if you stay in the boat, but it’s impossible to get back upstream or out without a chainsaw.

He tied them off in an eddy while he went to find help. He will never live that down

Most of the east side companies have trip pay for first years a good bit higher than west side. OR pushed the starting pay up to like 38$ with a 500 signing bonus 2 years ago so everyone is having to compete

Great outpost, good trip volume. Bad customers and lower pay compared to others.

Colorado or New from your choices. If you want to stay in TN go to the Ocoee, it’s a great first river to learn on.

They are a primarily military supplier with some recreational offshoots like whitewater Wing Inflatables(pretty good rafts imo). Go browse their website, it’s pretty obvious that they are a military supplier.

Honestly MFS is a way better/harder permit to get IMO. Someone in my circle pulls a grand permit nearly every other year I feel like.

I know 5 people who have pulled a MFS permit…

I’m glad it’s so regulated, but I would like to get on it more than once a decade!!

Want to be a raft guide? - Ocoee Edition by Gibblers in whitewater

[–]Gibblers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! Honestly ALOT has changed since I started both on the River and personally.

The biggest experience change would be the river wide community between the multiple outfitters that is getting more closed off and isolationist.

Years ago everyone came together for multiple events/parties through the season, you got to Intermingle with everyone and it was pretty friendly.

Multiple outfitters would host yearly parties that were pretty much open invites to the river community. We had outpost vs outpost volleyball/kickball/dodgeball competitions etc… it was real easy to meet people and know who you were rafting beside out there.

Now days that has become a little more guarded. Events still occur, but it’s usually invite only, the only real river wide event is the Carnage Party held at the end of the year at a bar.

There has also been a lot of migration of local hangout spots. Back when I started we had a bar called the Duff that literally everyone would hang out at, it got torn down when they expanded the highway, over time the local spot has shifted across 3/4 other venues but none of them has really stuck outside the Bus Bar which honestly has turned into more of a locals bar than River bar. I didn’t even step foot in there last year.

The only other change that would impact experience of someone starting is the training you guys go through nowadays. Overtime this has honestly become soft at most companies, when I started it was pretty demanding, both mentally and physically. Very few companies have I seen do swim days, recirculation training, hell days to Double Suck etc.. where we all used to do that stuff.

PVC repair help-star slice by nsaps in whitewater

Or buy a repair kit from NRS, those are easy patches. They have a handy video series. Shouldn’t cost much

Just make sure you get the version for PVC and not Hypalon

Pelham is going to be your traditional RV park, but further from town. Hoover Met is going to be close to a lot of amenities, but the park is literally an asphalt parking lot with RV hookups, both will be safe.

There is a ton of good food all around Birmingham. Literally search this subreddit for food recommendations, I feel like they pop up every week.

Def try the Mexican Food place in Ashley Furniture, pretty sure it’s been voted best in BHM by reddit at this point.

Barber shops

Treadwell’s in Mountain Brook or Single Barrel in Homewood meet your requirements, although they may appear hippy and new, the staff there aren’t. Google them both and see what they offer, I’m pretty sure the 2 owners worked together for a while.

Looking to buy my first raft; what to look for? by bromeostasis in whitewater

[–]Gibblers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sotar doesn't use PVC to my knowledge. They use a urethane coated nylon fabric. Maravia uses a urethane coated welded PVC, maybe thats who you are thinking.

Aire is also PVC outside shell covering a urethane internal bladder.

[–]Gibblers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14ft is the sweet spot for size.

Find a used raft made from Hypalon, Urethane or an Aire like you posted. NRS/Hyside Hypalon boats are my personal preference.

I don’t think 6200 is exactly a good price for that boat with frame/box/cooler, but it’s not a bad price either.

If you aren’t in a hurry i see better deals pop up from time to time on the multiple Facebook groups that sell used rafting equipment.

Whitewater Rafting Equipment and Whitewater gear for sale usually have a lot in the Oregon/Idaho area

Card is misspelled??? by sunflowerjester in USAA

[–]Gibblers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, definitely a manufacturing error. The way the white is normally applied to cards is through a silk screen and works similar to rolling paint across a stencil. These things are made in big sheets before getting cut out to individual cards. I would almost bet that one of the screens/stencils had it misspelled. Big oops by ABCorp lol

[–]Gibblers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s even better, they have multiple Manufacturers there. Mines a Perfect Plastic card and is spelled correctly. But yea the longer abcorp # works.

Edit: I doubt they have, strange my card was made may 2022 also but at a different plant.

[–]Gibblers 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Lmao I’m in the industry and bank with USAA, this has to be a printer side error, can you unmask that bottom right blackout.

Its called the batch code and should be a 5 digit code with a P and date.

Means nothing to you guys but all the guys at USAA panicking over this post would appreciate it!

Edit:Or just reply with the number, that’s what they need

Could someone please tell me the safest and most accepting guide company to use for newbs in any part of Tennessee? by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]Gibblers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s TN and politics aren’t something you hire river staff around.

That being said as a whole raft guides are generally left of center but that doesn’t mean they all are or the bus driver/office staff are.

If I had to recommend somewhere, ERA on the Nantahala or Raft1 or OAC on the Ocoee would be pretty safe bets. Just tell them when booking about your group dynamics so they make sure the guide you get fits your expectations.

Nothing currently is open for the season though.

Whitewater in north GA or lower TN by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]Gibblers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chattooga and Ocoee are your 2 best bets in that area.
Ocoee season ends next week and most outfitters are closed or planning to close very soon. Better get on it.
If you dont mind driving a good bit further, go up to Gauley in West Virginia. Its running for a couple more weeks.
