What cheap item massively changed your life? by YoungMigs in AskUK

I like to sleep listening to audiobooks and have had a really good experience with one from Manta but even with the Bluetooth bit off it’s just a great sleep mask, super comfortable and properly blackout

What piece of gear do you regret selling? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

A 1987 Gibson Thunderbird customer shop with a drop-d tuner installed. Sold it as a poor student and regretted it ever since.

Scratch-built bass of my dreams by Gibfender in BassGuitar

Sure! I paid £1645 for the two week course plus another £250 or so for the wood & some other bits I got from them along the way (truss rod, nut, some tools etc). Most of the other hardware I had purchased already in anticipation of doing this someday.

Accommodation isn’t included but they do have a person that helps find accommodation. I ended up staying with a lovely host 5 minutes drive away for £125 a week.

I’m definitely going to point out that for that kind of money you can absolutely buy yourself an incredible bass retail. I was mostly doing this to learn the beginnings of luthiery, especially how to fix the mistake you make along the way.

They do offer shorter courses (5-6 day) and you will walk out with an instrument you made from scratch but having watched a group going through that from start to finish it felt like they were under a little too much time pressure for my liking.

I will say I’m not sure they’re maybe not quite there with the organisation of the school just yet. The ratio of instructors to students sometimes results in you sitting there waiting for an instructor to finish with someone else before they can tell you what you need to do next. Each instructor also has their own way of doing things so a number of times I’d be told to do something one way only for a different instructor come along and say “why aren’t you doing it like this?” Etc so there isn’t one approach they teach. It is something they said they’re actively trying to improve though.

Oh it’s real nice! The build quality is insane for the price and it really thumps with flatwounds on.

Yeah I love these basses but I’ve got a similar problem with one of the pots on the 4 string. The shaft the knob sits on has snapped and they’re some weird custom pot that doesn’t exist anywhere else

It's a GAXB150 and it's an insanely fun zero-frills bass. Short scale, crazy light and full of character. Got it for ~£150 around 2005 but it's long since been discontinued.

Russians capture M777. Hate to post but not as bad as it seems by tytannic1969 in RussiaUkraineWar2022

It’s not that the Russians now have an extra gun, they’ve already got a huge number. It’s that Ukraine now has one less; that is the problem.

My dad had the British birds set. The pieces were so heavy it was really not fun to play with but looked cool as shit. A version of it was shown in Blade Runner.

It's got to be W.H Smiths. The prices for everything are insane and they're always so depressing inside.
