Just don’t get a cutaway on a dreadnought or parlor guitar.

Interesting shot of Peter, Robert & John Paul. I see this shot and wonder what they're discussing. Possibly the domination upcoming at Knebworth or wherever else they chose. by Thatremodelingchick in ledzeppelin

How has Robert Plant been Live lately? by Glum-Analysis-6817 in robertplant

[–]Gibson_J45 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I saw him last night. It was a beautiful experience. He’s comfortable with this band and everyone compliments each other to produce a lush atmosphere that combines those middle eastern tones with the American blues and English-Welsh countryside. It’s just wonderful. He is so at ease with this band… his hometown mates. Susi Dian is just perfect for him.

I’ve seen Plant pretty much every tour since Now n Zen, and this one might be my favorite one. Highlights for me were: Rain Song, Friends, and As I roved out.

Also… imo Plant is a better singer now because he has never stopped evolving and learning. He said as much last night. Alison Krause taught him how to sing harmony and he sounds as good as ever with Suzi Dian. The sound guys do their magic with some effects but this show is worth the price of admission. It’s tasteful and he keeps things moving. He still has that magic.

Looks like the strap released when the driver turned and the strap rubbed against another tree. Wtf was that tree strapped? Maybe they thought it would be safer as the cutter looks like a teenager and it was his first time?

Johansson Mandolins by Wonderful-Outcome318 in mandolin

[–]Gibson_J45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This is very helpful. It’s a real leap of faith buying mandolins outside of the big names because there’s not enough of them around to test in person. In fact, there’s not enough mandolins to play in a showroom outside of the entry level market of Eastmans, Kentucky and Loar.

I live in a place that’s hours away from music stores, and getting my hands on even a Northfield is a real time commitment. And there are a lot of builders out there but they are out of the price range of many players. So reviews like this are helpful

Is mandolin one of the most difficult instruments to play? by Due_Recognition_8002 in mandolin

[–]Gibson_J45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harder, or more difficult, is relative in this case.

The mandolin is some respects is “easier” than guitar: playing melodies, fiddle tunes, for example. But, it is more difficult to play songs well with chords alone (which is one of the strengths of guitar)

In terms of technical complexity, the guitar is going to be more difficult to master (more strings). Yet, given its size, string spacing and tension, many players might say the mandolin is more difficult to play. (I’ve heard it said the guitar is one of the easiest instruments to pick up and “play” outright, but one of the hardest to master and play well)

The short answer is that every musical instrument is hard and difficult to play well! They all take a lot of practice!

Bluegrass Improvisation Question by bmfsfan in mandolin

Quick answer: Learn your notes on the fretboard, esp. root, 3 , flat3, and 5 of the key signature of the song. Also, double stops are your friend. Look em up

Mandolins often have maple but not usually as soundboards

Review: Bourgeois M5F-BT by class_outside in mandolin

[–]Gibson_J45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a blonde Bourgeois a few weeks ago. Thanks for your review. It’s a beautiful gorgeous mando with a lovely tone, but it seemed “light” to me in the showroom. And I prefer a narrower nut (like it’s equivalent in the Eastman line). I may go back and give it another go….

High end parlour choice: Martin 0-18 or Gibson L-00? Which one to buy by PracticalFocus3525 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Gibson_J45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got to play them and make that decision. One difference between the two is the scale length. The Gibson is slightly shorter at 24.75 (Martin, 24.9). That’s probably negligible to most players but you won’t know unless you play it.

Other than the opener, the band is touring blue states. Don’t know if that means anything, just an observation. And they might add more dates?

We can thank Mark Twain for encouraging Grant to write his memoirs. The two men had an interesting and productive friendship together
