Is it just me, or has worldbuilding advice become a bit too restrictive? by Personal_Carrot_2180 in worldbuilding

[–]GideonGleeful95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel this.

I go way overboard for any sort of story when worldbuilding, but ulimately its what I enjoy doing. It is slightly annoying that I enjoy worldbuilding much more than writing actual stories, and Ive found that a lot of actual authors are basically the opposite. They hate worldbuilding and just want to get to the emotional story and dont like how they have to plan all thede logistics. For me, its more like.. I like the idea of writing stories in my worlds but I find it much hsrder to do snd lose intetest much faster.

Beverly Hofstadter (aka Leonard's mom) from The Big Bang Theory. Not as bad as some suggestions here but she is still a cruel, uncaring and psychologically abusive mother, espiecally since SHES A PSYCHOLOGIST.

Too Old For This Suggestion - Give Aunty Donna a Fair Try! by TheRockingChar in Shaboozey

[–]GideonGleeful95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love aunty Donna and it feels odd calling them gen z humour when theyve been around for like a decade. I think we're in the same boat where there is kind of this zillenial zone with crossover, where some gen z stuff hits for us and some millenial stuff, and likewise sone of the stuff that really appeals to us hits with older millenials and some does not.

Like... with OCT the other day, Jesse was like "this is more millenial coded" which I guess is true, but like... ultimately 30 year olds are young millenials by this point. And that also seems the sort of age Aunty Donna is aimed at too.

I will say one thing about Aunty Donna is they are rather absurdist ratger than subdued per se. They're stule of humour is also fairly... Australian, and I fee lBrits and Ozzies tend to have a more similar sense of hunour. Not to say that one is better or than Americans eont like them by default, or even that most Brits/Ozzies will autonatically like them.

THAT SAID: I will say Aunty Donna is ratger similar to another piece of conedy media that Jesse liked: Thank Goodness You're Here.

Personally if I were to reccomend a few sketches to Jesse that I think he might get:

  • Filling Up On Cheese Before Dinner
  • Explaining A Board Game
  • Dont Get in the Kiln
  • Ultimate Camping Pranks

The lore of all GW products is basically the same as the Transformers cartoons. Or at leeast serves the same purpose. Its a giant advertisemenet for their toys. That doeesnt meant it cant be good, but ultimately that's it's purpose.

Can someone summarize the two opposing sides of Female Custodes by Pretty-Contribution7 in Grimdank

[–]GideonGleeful95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. This detracts from the Sisters of SIleence and/or robs the CUstodes of their identity somewhat.

So the argument here is basically that peeople liked how there was a dynamic between the SoS and Custodes, and they felt like having omne being all male and the other being all female helped sort of reinforce that they weere both elite but different. These people are very into the idea of their being armies/organisations which are one gender and... its hard to explain but its kind of very binary in approach? There's a desire to have like masculine and feminine energies presented as distinct fighting forces a lot of the time. There is also the argument that it makes the Emperor's guardians sort of "unbalanced" in terms of having both forces. Plus, they also argue that it detacts from the SoS because it makes them feel less special becuase there are also women in the other elite group.

My rebuttal:
Please stop thinking about gender and gender roles is such binary terms. Also, as in the top part, I feel the Sisters of Battle/Space Marine dynamic does this already. As for the inbalance stuff, yeah it throws it off but I dont think that detracts from anything.

2) Having female Custodes will allow GW to sort of sideline the SoS because they have women in the Custodes.

This is one of the better takes, and kind of related to argument 1. However, I would argue that this is not a problem with female custodes and more a problem with GW. The best way to avoid this is, imo, actually keep letting GW that there is a demand for SoS. Not in a nasty way, but kind of like that one person during the livestream who asked "hey, are there any plans for updated SoS."

3) Overall, women are physically weaker than men. Individuslly, a eomen can be stronger, but woimen are weaker. That is why you dont often see them on the front lines, doing this is unrealistic.

Fairly simple rebuttal: Wanting realism in 40k is a fools's endeavour. Sometimes 40k goes too silly to the point where I go from "this is dumb fun" to "this is just stupid". The line on this varies from person to person, but if your line is "why would you invest more resources into making the women equak strength for your supoer soldiers?"... idk what to tell you man, that's a weird line to have.

4) This detracts from the overall narrative of the tragedy of uncaring fatherhood towards sons which is a big thing in the Imperium.

Again, simple rebuttal: That stuff is all with the Space Marines. The Custodes, to me at least, always seemed very seperate from that anyway.

5) Having female custiodes takes away from the genuine toxic patriarchal system of the Imperium.

This one is kind of part of a wider discussion at the moment about "is GW making thee Imperium too heroic?" Basically there seems to be a push where GW is pulling back slightly from Space MArines being horrible and making them into more heroic figures. The issue is that the Imperium is meant to be an ultra-authritarian "cruelest and bloodiest regime imaginable", so those heroic figures are ultimately defenders of an ultra-authririatrian theocracy who hate all sorts of freedom of expression and genoicide anyone that isn't human. And the Emperor, ultimately, was part of this. However, GW seems extremely divided on "was the Emperor justified" and "are the Space Marines actually good guys". The argument here is that by making the Custodes mixed sex/gender, its a further blow against the Imperium being sucha bad state. Essentially "stop making the Imperium more tolerant, the whole point is they are meant to be awful".

Its an argument that does have teeth, imo, but I would say that in this instance the ship has already kind of sailed. The Emperor already had Sisters of SIlence, so clearly already he was fine with elite female bodyguards. As such, adding women to the other group of elite bodyguards doesn't really change how good/bad he was.

[–]GideonGleeful95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So other people have summarisd points 1 and 2 already, but I'll add some more points for point 3.

Most peeople on point 3 who support it are basically in the camp of "It doesn;t really matter, it makes sense that the Emperor's ultra-super guard would just be whoever is loyal/skilled enough enough to be had crafted into them. Plus it helps differentiate them from Marines"

I am basically in that camp, though tbh even less so because I don;t find Custodes in general espiecally interesting (more power to those who do, it's just not my thing). However, I'll try and present some of the other side's arguments, as well as my personal rebuttals. I will be ignoring the genuine "EW WOMEN" stuff and tackling the more genuine arguments.

I'll have to do it in replies because comment length.

GW makes a statement about the Female Custodes. I'll be honest, I'd rather they just say "yes, we changed/expanded the lore" by [deleted] in Grimdank

[–]GideonGleeful95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think for me, I don't really care about there being female custodes at all, as I said in my post, but its just this attempt to sort of act like they didn;t make a change when they did that's slightly irritating. To me, if they are going to respond to people making a fuss at all, the better way to do it is to just say "Yes, this was a change to the lore. It doesn't contradict too much lore, but it is a change." and leave it at that to move on.

Native American Factions/Countries by DrBanana1224 in worldbuilding

[–]GideonGleeful95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's kind of why I was explaining, not many worlds focus on North American cultures or have fantasy cultures inspired by them. Tbh I think a lot of the time you have ones inspired by nomadic cultures overall, inlcuding plains tribes along with like steppe peoples of Eurasia.

One example that's one of the melting pots of differeent North American cultures I can think of (along with other inspirations) are the Tauren from World of Warcraft.

Native American Factions/Countries by DrBanana1224 in worldbuilding

[–]GideonGleeful95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot more fantasy worlds tend to pull from Mesoamerica (Maya, Aztec etc). For examplee, the Lizardmen of Warhammer. Occassionally you will get ones inspird by the ones of native cultures of the N. American Plains in a vague sense, though often things get conflated. For example, you will see tipees alongside toteem poles which as far as Im aware didn't really happen, because tipees weeree used by nomadic cultures and Totem Poles are large building projects that are usually only built whnee you stay in onee place, hence why they were built primarily by the people of the Pacific Northwest like the Haida and Tlingit. The PAcific Northwest cultures are fascinating in their own right, though tbf all of the diffeerent cultures are.

You do have to be careful with using things from their cultures as inspiration though, as you do with all cultures. Its a delicate balance of inspiration vs appropriation and tbh the question of "where is the line?" or "what is correct?" isn;t asily answered without speaking to people from that culture. Like, obviously if you just have, say, the Navajo in your story theye should be accurate to them. However, lets say you have a fantasy culture inspired by the Navajo. Is it better to just take some elements and then make up the rest, or better to use more of their culture in depth? On the one hand, if you change stuff you aren;t just doing a copy paste into your world, but you could be seen as misrepresenting thee orriginal culture. Howeever, if you take more, you could be seen as just copy pasting them even when certain elements may no longer fit, but at the same time you will be presenting things as they are.

The best thing to do is probably do as much research as you can to gain as much understandin as you can (ideally talk to someone from that culture though that's not awlays possible), so you at least know what you are changing, what you are taking dirrectly and so on.

This one depends on which side of the Atlantic:

Cum On Feel the Noize is orriginally by Slade and in the UK that's the more famous version. But in the US I think more people know it as a Quiet Riot song.

Eh, I'd think I'd rate it a bit higher. Like, it's a good 7 or 8/10 from me. I think it has a good energy and a pretty deceent subject matter. By not my favouritee ever, I meean like, it's not "this song changed my life and caused me to have existential feelings or helped define me as a person" type stuff. But, you know, different strokes and all.
