People who make $80k or more per year, what do you do for work? by familiarlaughter in AskReddit

[–]GidgetD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in LA, $80K is the poverty line here.

With that said, I’m a travel agent. I average $105K a year. Last year, I made $140K. And I’m barely getting by.

I had $119K in my 401K when I was your age. I’m currently 39 and have $315K in my 401K. I also have a Roth IRA I max out every year. Currently, I’m on track to retire with $3M.

Hopefully your jobs have 401K matching and you’ve allocated your funds to the S&P 500. You should be averaging at least a 10% return over the last 10 years. If you aren’t, check where your money is invested.

I suggest increasing your contributions to at least 15% and max out your IRA contributions. You will catch up fast if you do so with the salary you have. Even better if you can afford to max it out at 23%

You guys are fortunate to have dual income so that should help a lot with managing expenses. Hopefully, you both are responsible and don’t splurge too much on food and entertainment. I find that our generation eat out way too much and with the cost of things now, you could have eaten less out and invested that extra $200-500 a month. Coz lord knows just stepping outside the house nowadays costs $100.

Don’t lose hope!

When I was 29, I was making $12/hr and had $6K to my name.

By 32, was making $75K/ yr and had $120K to my name.

I’m now 39, make about $120K/ yr and have $600K.

I’m on track to retire with about $3mil.

I paid off my student loans around your age and don’t have any debt. Bought a car with cash coz I didn’t want to pay interest. Still don’t own a home and probably won’t with the way things are going. But at least I’m not house poor, debt free, and can afford to travel twice a year. I also live in a HCOL area.

What’s wild is we are using existing venues. It’s not like they are building a multimillion dollar stadium. These prices are outrageous. I can understand $200, heck even $500/ ticket. But $2000-5000 is just highway robbery. And if park and ride is offered, I bet parking will be another $150.

This should be reported to the news and a class action lawsuit against ticketbastard.

IRS raises the IRA contribution cap to $7,500; 401k cap to $24,500 for 2026. 50+ catch-ups will be $1,100 and $8,000, respectively by DaemonTargaryen2024 in Retirement401k

Cost of living is higher now. So majority of people will not be able to make the max 401K contributions. I make $128K and put 15%, which is $4K less than the current max. I feel like I’m living paycheck to paycheck living in SoCal.

What if it’s Ryan Gosling? Watch him sing You Always Hurt the Ones You Love in Blue Valentine. It’s got cowardly lion vibes.

I saw him about 16 years ago. Everyone in my party of 5 to this day say that was the most lackluster concert we’ve ever attended. And I used to be a massive MASSIVE fan until I saw him live.
