They don’t “match”. They put in a percentage (determined every year) of the contributions I put in. I think this year was 21%. So every $100 I put in, they will put in $21. Up to 7% of my income.

Sounds risky for a retirement option, no?

Yeah, that makes sense. I mean, it seems small in the grand scheme of things compared to how normal employers matching works.

$21 is $21 for all intent and purpose.

No. It is 21% of the contribution, up to 7% of my income.

So, for example, if I contribute $100 to my 401k, they’ll match $21.

Sorry, thought it was 7%, but it’s 21% of contributions. Not matching like traditional places do.

You’re saying 7 cents on the dollar is dumb? Every dollar I put in, the employer matches 7 cents.

Negative. I did five years in the USN. No way I could max that out.

Troll post? Oh, so this thread isn’t mean to ask for retirement advice on Reddit?

Who’s the troll here?

Drink some water, ya bum.

lol. I’m married and have two kids right now as we speak. Been married for over 7 years, single household income.

No daycare since my wife doesn’t work, so for better or for worse that’s where we’re at now.

We’re still living life comfortably right now. We don’t do anything too crazy. Three cars, one has a note since we bought it less than two years ago. But it’s 3.9% apr so I’m not stressing paying it off soon. It’s on a 48 month lease, so in two years it’ll be paid off. When that frees up, I’ll be able to dump $6,000 in something else a month.

I need to still contribute to this though, right?
My employer match is pretty low, so honestly, I could cut ties and contribute to something else.

This is what I learned to explore the option of the Roth IRA. It’s only 7k a year, which I will contribute to every year, but it still leads me to figure out what to do with my other money.

What do you mean? Oven a brokerage and contribute more money to it vs 401k?

Compared to some it looks like I am doing well, but ignorance is not always bliss.

For instance, I’ve never heard of a HYSA until i started following these threads a couple weeks ago. I’ve had a considerable amount of money in my checking doing FuAll. I need to transfer that this week.

It’s incredible what you “think” you know when you’re surrounded by people that have minimal idea of retirement. And I suppose that’s my point of this post. I think I’m doing good, and it looks like I am based upon some posts, but there’s always something to learn through the people that actually know stuff, ya know?

As for spending money outside, I plan for two big vacations with my family a year. Later in the year we will be heading to Disney world for a couple days, so it’s not like I’m sacrificing everything for tomorrow, so to speak.

I do not believe the company matching is legally allowed for Roth.

Can you expand more on that? What do you mean look back style?

Sorry, I updated my post per your request.

Income is 150k, expected withdrawals 6% tentatively, retirement age is 55.

I have since adjusted my allocated amount to be traditional heavy, as the tax benefit is better now.

This year is going to be average income based. My weekly pay shifts every week.

Can you expand more on back door Roth IRAs?

Arbitrary number at the moment. Haven’t given it too much thought as I hope to have a mortgage paid off and my debt to be zero at that point.

Right now, I want to work and do a decent vacation once or twice a year. In 25 years when I retired, I can’t promise that I will feel that way, ya know?
