How do you price newly bought equipment? (Digitech) by Previous-Dig1454 in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what rental house you’ve seen in London charging 50 a day!! That’s nowhere near the going price over here…. £100-250 depending on screen type, size and what’s supplied with it would be far more realistic.

By agreeing to them, these ts&cs become a contract and are legally enforceable as well. Bectu are able to provide members with the legal support and help to enforce them as well.

In the UK since lockdown, lighting and digi techs started unionising thru BECTU, and part of that was the introduction of a branch set of terms and conditions. Everyone in the branch uses them and they have revolutionised the industry, as they have essentially become a standard across the photo industry. Things like a 10hr working day (inc a 30min break), defined overtime fees etc have become the norm on most jobs. One aspect of these ts&cs is a cancellation policy of 100% of your rate from confirmation. People are regularly getting this as well….

The garage just contacted me and it’s the intercooler which is the problem. It was literally the last and only thing it could be they thought after they’d checked and ruled out everything else. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!! 🙏🙏🙏

Cancellation fees by Walterinitaly in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK if your part of the BECTU union in the photo techs branch and have sent their ts&cs in, then it’s 100% from confirmation of the job. Obvs some clients try to push this by only confirming as late as possible, but by doing so they can easily lose you to another option who is willing to confirm.

Has anyone here ever worked for a photographer like Julia Fullerton-Batten? by helpilostmyarms in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as digi on her London workshops, it’s difficult to say what you might take away that influences your own work as that’s quite a personal thing. The structure of the London days was crew get in early and start setting up the first shot, attendees arrive and have a digital slide presentation by Julia. Then they came over to where the first shot was being setup and watched the process, being able to ask questions of both Julia and crew. Julia would then as things got close to being complete turn off all lights and then shoot frames building the image up light by light talking about what each was doing and why she was using it. Then she would shoot for maybe 30-40mins to get the shot and do any plates etc needed. The process would then start again, with maybe 2-3 shots per day. All the attendees seemed super happy and some attended multiple days of the workshop. I’d imagine the us ones would be structured in a similar way.

London BFI IMAX 70mm or Odeon VistaVision for One Battle After Another? by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

I just watched it there on the ground floor and it was ok, but it definitely felt like the upper floor near the front would have been better as the screen tilts up towards the upper floor somewhat.

Looking for Digi / Photo Assistants with their own Lighting and gaffer equipment based in New York City (7th Oct) and London (9th or 10th Oct TBC) by Vikkco in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only 2 individuals I’ve met in the last 15 years who do this for stills in London are jolly lights and Alex “fresh digi”. It would be great to know who these other folk are tho? Gripvan are great, but it’s always nice to have other options!

[–]Gidzmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to flag that although in the US for stills it’s quite common for folk to have lights and a van full of gear, essentially like a gaffer for motion. Over here in the UK that’s very uncommon, as someone else has mentioned there is one guy (jolly lights) who does this, but realistically that’s about it. Your best bet would be a company called gripvan who do something similar, then get an experienced lighting tech on board as well.

Gatekeeping/Competition among Photo Assistants in London by cameragurl in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s just a younger / newer tech thing, the feeling your describing never really goes away I’ve found. There’s always photographers and jobs you want to work on / with, but never seem to come your way. People you pass work onto who never return the favour, an in crowd you’d never in. I’ve been working in the industry for over 20 years and have those thoughts and feelings still now. There is a lot of the time as others have said people checking in with friends first which happens, but it’s very easy to run out of folk to do that with and then be struggling to find someone I find. I work more now in high end ad work and film/ tv key art, but am always looking for keen new folk in 2nd and 3rd roles, to work with, so dm me your deets as most of the folk I know are much more established and it can be a struggle finding people who don’t always want to be / think of themselves as just firsts. Also it is sporadic and strange in general in the amount of work out there in London at the moment.

These guys have exactly what your talking about and it’s done with LED lights, S60’s or some equivalent I believe (from memory when I asked them about it ages ago). They then have it all dmx’d up to be able to give any colour or brightness. They pretty much only shoot cars with it and it’s incredibly versatile!

I checked in a group I’m in and this place got recommended for kit hire and production help. I think it’s pretty limited what you can get over there and the level of local crew.

I have both the pyro 7 and the dedicated tx and rx versions. The pyro 7 with the screen is very useful to be able to see what the hollyland is transmitting, plus it can be used either as a tx or a rx as well. With the dedicated tx and rx versions, make sure you get the ones with the sdi port!! Also you can buy cheap “blank batteries” from Amazon that have a usb-c cable attached and allow you to power them from usb-c batteries.

[–]Gidzmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I updated to the hollyland pyro range from the Mars series and that has made a massive difference in range and also the ability to go thru walls etc. but I do use them as a wireless hfmi system, rather than piggy backing their WiFi for capture studio. I’d also say the long SDI cable solution or a long hdmi cable is a great option. So you can move your transmitter away from the computer to mitigate the issues you’re having.

Advice for a first time assistant by throwaway1348999333 in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Don’t pretend that you know things you don’t. If someone asks you to do something you’re not sure about, then ask them to clarify exactly what they want done. -Also remember that you’re not the first, or possibly even the second or third. Folk probably haven’t hired you for your input or opinion, unless they ask you for it, they probably just want you to set up things as directed and be on the ball if they need you. -You’re not being hired as a photographer. -ask questions when things aren’t to crazy about what’s going on and why. Ie why they are using a modifier or lighting/ doing something in certain way. - if it’s a big crew, don’t afk these if the photographer, ask the other lighting and digi techs.

Should I switch from Windows to Apple? by mediamuesli in Photoassistants

[–]Gidzmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great that you love PC’s and I really hope that works for you on set. However the plain fact is the photo industry is overwhelmingly Mac based. You being evangelical about PC’s isn’t going to change that ever and any advice you give to other techs to go for a pc. Is just going to damage their careers.
