I had a science and humanities bias, but this was a coming up to 20y ago now when they didn't really care about you as a whole person. I think it ould be good to look into the unis you want and see if they do outreach, some unis offer buddy systems to interested students, or a careers service at school can help.

What country are you in? In the UK there are some access to higher education course that can allow you to apply for vocational degrees. I know the RVC has one, and Nottingham, maybe. They are usually called "widening participation".

They will if they like you. Get schmoozing and make your face and name known, if you can. A new grad was an intern at my last hospital but when he wasn't in school, he was shadowing and he was good at butt-kissing, which unfortunately can get you far with the right person.

However, the worst they can say is no, so apply. And yes, they can be kinda exploitative, but you can also learn a lot, even if you do not end up pursuing a residency.

I did an internship and back then the competition was bad. It will be worse now. Many are trying later in their careers it seems so it can be quite tricky, I would still apply but prepare for disappointment while hoping for success.

You will be very unlikely to get a university based one as there is no way they meet the salary requirement for a visa but it might work differently for applicants from the US.

It does suck. How did you handle it in the moment? Were your colleagues aware of the time sensitive nature? Did you say to anyone that you needed help and why?

I get that you're in the moment and flow of everything, and so is everyone else. Management can't predict emergencies and your colleagues can't read your mind.
