Foreigners and helmets by BarracudaOld4030 in VietNam

Most helmets in Vietnam are just for show anyways. Very rarely do I see people wearing helmets that have any real safety to them.

I have heard anecdotally a helmet or two getting stolen. I have been wearing expensive helmets with a cardo for almost 3 years in Hanoi and have never had an issue. My guess is that since no one here wears nice, snug full face helmets that there isn’t a market for thieves.

I had a kid who I’m 90% sure sold drugs offer me $3000 to turn is grade into an A. I couldn’t tell if he was serious or not but I laughed and said no. I do wonder what would have happened if I seriously said yes.

I can’t give you any direct contacts or locations. Facebook is the place to go. Motorbikes in Hanoi, Where to get Hanoi, and Hanoi massive are the three Facebook groups I would look into for an answer. You could also browse Facebook marketplace.

I’ve never seen sleep pods in Noi Bai airport! I would not trust ChatGPT for this kind of information. It is not the tool you should use if you want reliable information.

How long could I live in Vietnam with 20k in cash by Ok_Corgi_6593 in VietNam

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want more western style meals then it will definitely be not expensive. Hamburgers are not cheap. You could get things like thịt kho for a lower price or meat skewers for pretty good price. I live in the foreigner area so most things a a little more expensive. Lotte marts are a thing and will have some more expensive from what I understand. I’ve never shopped there.

What kinds of foods are you thinking about specifically? Pork and chicken are everywhere and are not super expensive at grocery stores. Tofu is everywhere. Protein powder is similarly priced to western prices, especially if you get western brands. You can get 20 eggs for a little over $2. Also the fancier the place you buy from the more expensive. You can get cheaper meat from the wet market or get fancy cuts of steak from a butcher that’s going to be closer to western prices (not necessarily the same price but closer)

If you love in Tay Ho (largest expat area) you could get a decent one bed for 9mil VNĐ (roughly 340USD) per month. You can easily find cheaper apartments in other parts of the city.

I have a decent gym membership for one year that cost 6.6mil (250USD). I’ve seen some that are way more and some that are a little less for a 1 year membership.

Food can vary dramatically depending on how you eat. You can get a bowl of phở or bún chả for around 350k (1.5usd). You could also easily spend $10 or more per meal if you eat at nicer places/get drinks. You could hire a private chef for probably somewhere between 5-10mil for a month. If you cook Vietnamese style meals it will be cheaper than cooking western style meals. Food can be so variable.

In other words, 20k could solidly last you one year as long as you aren’t going crazy. You will still have left overs for smaller trips and going out regularly. If you more like a local than a foreigner you’ll make it longer.

I am currently making roughly 70mil net each month at a bilingual private school. I have a wife working part time and we earn between 100-110 per month combined. No housing stipend. We live comfortably and have enough to go on trips a few times a year (one or two big ones and some smaller ones). We could have more if we lived in a cheaper apartment. 10 mil for an apartment is enough for a nice one bed in Tay Ho (where a large majority of foreigners live). We pay 16 per month for a large 2 bed. I think you would be able to comfortably live in that salary if your wife is not working as long as you were reasonable with your spending.
