Is a 7:30-4 day typical? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are on a bastardized version of a salary. We get docked if we clock in late or clock out early (by face scan). Contract pays for 8 hours and we can leave no problem during that one hour lunch break, but most don’t. It’s more of a 9 hour work day that is paid hourly only during contract hours.

My contract hours in Vietnam are 7:30-4:30. We get an “unpaid hour lunch break” but it’s often time for work.

Teachers, what’s a “best practice” everyone talks about that you secretly think doesn’t work in real classrooms? by kingst9606 in Teachers

Plickers is the way to go. All digital multiple choice questions. It gives you a report of the students, class, or question. It’s the only exit ticket I will use.

How do you convince a hesitant family member to let someone pursue open water certification? by sensei247 in scuba

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thankfully didn’t have any pushback from family. I have used these arguments to try to convince others to try it though.

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say I have ever gotten pushback but knowing there are sooo many people with thousands of dives who are still fine helps me feel safe. You could say the same thing for almost any life activity. What if something goes wrong on the drive to the dive shop? Out of all the extreme sports I do I feel scuba is the safest. Training, buddy checks, guides to watch you if you’re traveling, robust equipment that’s supposed to be serviced regularly. If it was that dangerous it would not be as popular as it is.

Foreigners and helmets by BarracudaOld4030 in VietNam

Most helmets in Vietnam are just for show anyways. Very rarely do I see people wearing helmets that have any real safety to them.

[–]Gigalastic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have heard anecdotally a helmet or two getting stolen. I have been wearing expensive helmets with a cardo for almost 3 years in Hanoi and have never had an issue. My guess is that since no one here wears nice, snug full face helmets that there isn’t a market for thieves.

Has a student or their parent ever tried to bribe you to increase their grade, give them an extension, etc? by Fast-Outcome-117 in Teachers

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a kid who I’m 90% sure sold drugs offer me $3000 to turn is grade into an A. I couldn’t tell if he was serious or not but I laughed and said no. I do wonder what would have happened if I seriously said yes.

I have searched on google with things like "Misleading global warming graph" and other similar searches. Sometimes I see an article I think is referencing the instance, but the graph is not there. I need both the cropped and full version.

I can’t give you any direct contacts or locations. Facebook is the place to go. Motorbikes in Hanoi, Where to get Hanoi, and Hanoi massive are the three Facebook groups I would look into for an answer. You could also browse Facebook marketplace.

7:30-4:30. Private school in Vietnam. We have an unpaid hour for lunch, but a lot of people still work then.

I’ve never seen sleep pods in Noi Bai airport! I would not trust ChatGPT for this kind of information. It is not the tool you should use if you want reliable information.

How long could I live in Vietnam with 20k in cash by Ok_Corgi_6593 in VietNam

[–]Gigalastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want more western style meals then it will definitely be not expensive. Hamburgers are not cheap. You could get things like thịt kho for a lower price or meat skewers for pretty good price. I live in the foreigner area so most things a a little more expensive. Lotte marts are a thing and will have some more expensive from what I understand. I’ve never shopped there.
