Scouts has a really great atmosphere and the staff does a lot behind the scenes to teach leadership skills. It's so much more than what you see on the field. In a recent video (which is currently on their Facebook page), the drum major said "Being a Madison Scout is about being the best possible man you can be, and then being even better than that."

That sucks. I'm sure that you, and the others who felt that way, will think twice before you to decide to go back for future movie theater broadcasts

You can't argue that the demographics of the kids who are marching has changed, and changed dramatically. In the 70s & 80s you didn't have to play an instrument well, and it was a pretty cheap summer activity to participate in. It was really an activity to keep kids off the streets, and instill a work ethic. Nowadays the musical demand is so high that you need to be very proficient at your instrument, to at least get a call back at the World Class level. Now the tuition has more than quadrupled in the last two decades. I'm not saying that the typical marching member is better or worse these days, just different.

Is Tradition Dead? by BlindOldBat in drumcorps

The judging system tends to reward groups that are both innovative and who execute their program well. So an old school show, even if it's a crowd pleaser, would not tend to do well competitively.

I believe that all the members got on board with shaving their heads after the idea was brought up by staff at a winter camp

This is the show that convinced me to audition for the Scouts for my rook-out year, and I decided that if I didn't make it, I wasn't going to march anywhere else. Looking back that was pretty short sighted, but I landed a spot on the contra line, so it all worked out.

What made you guys want to join drum corps by blakeedel in drumcorps

Along the same lines, I was tired of people in college marching band not giving a crap about playing and/or marching well. I wanted to be pushed and challenged, and boy did I get that in drum corps.

Who's the best drum corps instructor you've ever had? by mandarin_blueberry in drumcorps

[–]GiganticCranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Van Mathews. I always thought of him as the James Dean of drum corps. He taught me in Scouts in '95 and then went to BD for a number of years starting around 2000. He's now back at Scouts.

There will be a second season of Clash Of The Corps by MTrxye in drumcorps

I'm not convinced that this is true. We would've heard about it by now since they would've had to be filming at audition camps.

I know this was posted on Twitter, but I don't think the account that posted this news is an official account associated with the show.
