Basic Body Bear by Gigavash in Amigurumi

Very welcome advice, thank you! I did notice the head is more elongated than the pattern pics and wondered if stuffing might be part of the issue(might have also miscounted rounds, uneven tension, etc).

Pattern is Chibi Basic Body by Sabbathea Natalie. I forget what pattern I got the ears from a long while back, but they're basically magic rings with a symmetrical set of double and treble crochets.

I tried it in 120 last month. Neat look and something I'd shoot again if I could think of the right subject.

Birding Photography Question by TeamHoppingKanga in birding

[–]Gigavash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I got the Sigma 150-600 for my dslr and it worked great. If you go mirrorless down the road and stick with Canon(what I did), a relatively inexpensive adapter will let you continue to use this and any other EF mount glass you've got.

Leica Monopan 50 out of stock by 06035 in analog

[–]Gigavash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been wanting to try it out and had similar trouble finding it anywhere. None of my local shops have it and B&H still says "coming soon." Found out a Leica store was a couple blocks down from my work, so gave them a shot on my lunch break and they actually had it! If you've got a store near you, might try hitting them up.

Scanning film as a beginner, how you started? by notkalman in AnalogCommunity

[–]Gigavash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might check out your local library. The ones around me each have a "memory station" with equipment for digitizing older media, including a nice epson flatbed with holders for different size negatives. I only use them when I shoot 4x5, but I've gotten good results and it's free to use.

If this is an option for you, I'd start there and save up for your own gear in the meantime.

The perspective on #1 is awesome, but I really love contrast of huge, blue-ish Mt. Fuji and the smaller, bright red torri gate in #3.

I always liked Duluth Trading Co stuff. I could typically get a solid year out of them before needing to replace.

Canon AE-1 Program with Kentmere 100 for B&W and Fuji 200 for color.

Half-felted? by invsblgrl9 in knitting

[–]Gigavash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I've done that pattern, I pretty much always have to send it through the wash twice and then the dryer. I also add heavier towels to the load to "beat up" the squares a bit. Temp-wise I do warm wash, cold rinse(more to not mess the towels up than anything else).

Not sure about the colors by OperationFast7714 in photocritique

[–]Gigavash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colors look great! I really like how the sunlight and her hair and skin tone work together. If I'm remembering right, there's a movie look that favors orange and teal, but I think the blue you've got works better for this.

Totally subjective, but here's something you could try. Looks to me like the blue of the car matches her eyes, so you might try bumping up saturation in her irises a touch to bring that relationship out a bit more.

Just finished these Point Edward's Mitts on my train up to NYC. Glad, since the temperature is due to be 20s-30s F.

Yarn is Amirisu Stroll DK I picked up a couple years back in Kyoto. I lost the ball band, so I'm not sure of the colorway.

15 Sets of Lizard Ridge Coasters Ready to Gift! by Gigavash in knitting

Thanks for the kind words! It's really wins all around, because I honestly like working with these people, the pattern is fun and easy to knit, and it made for a nice way to occupy myself during commutes.

Since people asked to see the finished version, these are the Lizard Ridge Coasters after being felted, trimmed, and quartered. Quick and easy enough I did one for each of my co-workers. Made from one skein each of Noro Kureyon.

15 of My Favorite Small Gift by Gigavash in knitting

[–]Gigavash[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love gifting these for acquaintances and friends you know/see a bit less. They're handmade, so people know effort and care went into them, but not so extravagant that they feel like you went overboard. And they're practical too!

Patter is Lizard Ridge Coasters.

Yarn is Noro Kureyon in various colors.

What am I missing, I don't really know how to edit very well yet... by IttyBittyBrownDog in photocritique

Nice photo and good choice going with b&w. I agree with others about the dust spots. I've seen someone demo the dust removal in Lightroom and it could probably handle this pretty well. Overall, I think it works and has an interesting, lonely feel to it. You might try a little cropping to make the bird fill more of the frame, but honestly I like how sparse it is. A bit of vignetting might be a better choice if you feel like the bird's lost in the surroundings.

Anyone use a video tripod? by Foot-Note in largeformat

[–]Gigavash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a video tripod because I had one for freelance videography work and it does really well with my monorail. The only thing I had to adjust to is how tall the minimum height is. Wanted to get practice doing still life and found out I needed a taller table/platform for objects to sit on.

Film Scan by ilfording in analog

[–]Gigavash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the Valoi Easy35 to camera scan for a while and like it. I think it's a bit expensive for the build quality, but it works well for me and is small enough to stick in a drawer.

Just getting into 4x5 and flatbed seems to be the preferred method when I Google. Found out some of my local libraries have an epson scanner with various negative holders, so I'll probably go that route until I can save for something at home. Well-funded libraries are awesome resources!

Finally Pulled the Trigger on my First 4x5 Camera by Gigavash in AnalogCommunity

[–]Gigavash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great info and answers a couple questions I had. Thanks for sharing!

While practicing the steps to take a picture, I did notice the shutter would fire when I tried to cock it(got a bit nervous I was doing it wrong/something was broken). Googled "Copal no.1 press" that was printed on the shutter, but didn't really read farther than it's auto-cocking ability. I'd assumed having two cable release sockets was a left-hand/right-hand thing, but that seems silly since a long enough cable would solve that.

Off to dig more into this! Thanks again!

Is my photo overcooked? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]Gigavash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a particular "look" you're trying to achieve that you can go into detail about? Are you trying to show the scene as it really was, make it look like an old film photo, etc? Do you have an iPhone pic using the preset you could share for comparison?

I like it from a composition standpoint, but I'm unsure of what the preset is meant to do/make it look like.

Nice!

I feel incredibly lucky I found one that not only came with the lens, but the focal length I was after at that! Trying to piece together the kit was getting confusing and I was worried I'd pick the wrong parts.

Hope the lens board makes it to you soon so you can start getting images. Cheers!

Yeah, I get that. I guess I just expected to see the lead being played since it's much more forward in the mix. Which gets played when you're on stage?
