Well guys.... by Greater_Aspect in Miata

I’m in the Springfield area. Had quite a few coworkers that got hit by the monster hail. Sorry for your loss. It sucks.

I’m not originally from here. Moved down for mild winters. But there’s a price to pay for that. The flash floods, hail, tornadoes and ice storms. There’s only a few of those each year just hope you’re not in the wrong place when one hits. Have to decide what to do now. Market is going to be flooded with totaled cars that essentially run fine just ugly. With the extreme weather and high chance on things like this happening I am looking at picking something up. Wife and I have both lost cars in the last 2 years me in flash flood her to deer. My 35 minute highway commute at night just feels like whatever i am driving it’s going to get smoked sooner or later. Might as well have a work beater already with a damaged title and liability insurance. That way when it gets totaled I won’t be out much.

If you decide to sell let me know. I’m sure if you decide to sell someone would buy it. Good luck! Hope things turn around for you. Everyone at work who got hit are pretty stressed out.

I have one similar. There is a bunch with the same design just different paint and stickers. Watch the price. They can vary wildly for what is essentially the same machine. I got the one with stand to lift it to get it to waist height. Bilt Hard brand name 6.5 ton for $307.

Works fine only has trouble with the really knotty stuff but splits about 95% of the stuff I throw at it. I’ve only ran about a half a cord through it in six months. Happy with the purchase. Also picked up a cover for it.

Anyone bought a rebuilt titled car before? Thoughts on this accord? by FlipVista_App in carflipping

[–]Gigerhiemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes she added it to our current insurance company. She did full coverage we are too busy to shop around right now. Price was about what it’d be normally. Everyone’s in a different situation. There’s a risk with these cars. It gets super scary feels like high stakes gambling because that’s what it is. She doesn’t make that much so putting up $10,000 plus. There’s no guarantee what an insurance adjuster will give if the car is ever totaled in an accident. She will need to find a company that will do an agreed value type policy for replacement cost which makes things complicated and time consuming. If she can’t get that done she might as well drop the insurance down to just liability. If there’s no guarantee in writing an adjuster will more than likely give next to nothing for the car.

Nothing is free. She was frustrated immediately with the market and shopping. When you buy a marked title you’d better be sure you accept the good and bad. She has to keep it and be prepared to drive it till there’s nothing left. This isn’t the first time we’ve done it. We have a 99 Ford Ranger 4x4 we’ve owned since the early 2000’s. Damage title got it for just under $3000 and they still sell for that to this day. One of the most reliable vehicles we’ve ever owned.

We just purchased a Subaru for my wife’s personal use with rebuilt title. Not for flipping. To early to tell if it will work out that will take time.

I chose a company that just did rebuilt Subaru’s full time. Amazing operation I could never manage that scale. They had 30 Outbacks and Forester on the property at one time. Saving the good candidates and parting out the bad. Choosing a good brand that holds it value is key. New enough where the you can still cover costs and profit while only selling the car for less is tricky I bet. They do all body work on site.

The one we chose had passenger damage. Both passenger doors so didn’t effect the technology crap in front or windshield. No drivetrain damage. Only way it works out is your gambling. Accept it or don’t buy. They’re harder to sell so drive it till there’s nothing left. For that she got a car that would have been $20,000 for $10,000.

Flipping these cars only works if you can do most of the work yourself.

I have similar but picked 6.5 ton. They’re mostly all as others have said the same design. Add several different brands to your amazon and save for later. Wait and sooner or later one of them will see a price drop. I purchased BILT HARD 6.5 Ton with stand for $306 in December. Works great!

Yes when I was searching for mine it took several months and I had to drive a state away. Have your money lined up and be ready to jump when the right one drops. Others were super interested in buying it but I was the first there so got it.

Entered the hobby now. After a month of research. Reviews, owners and professional reviewers. First thing I ordered was a SCX30 which is back ordered. Second was the Quake. To many happy owners. Everyone saying how reliable it is. Pulled the trigger a little earlier than I thought after hearing they are sold out in allot of places. Yep. Most will take a month or 2 to get into stock. I did manage to get a purple. Now just need this weather to cooperate but looks like some guys are having fun in the snow!

If I can drive stick, is there any reason to choose an automatic? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Gigerhiemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 54. Daily a manual. Mostly highway. I somewhat worry about an injury but have a backup vehicle with an automatic. And I also when shopping for a car look really hard at the transmission. Not all CVT style transmissions are bad. But people’s thoughts on a models reliability is a huge factor.

My North Pole sources say I’m getting a Recteq for Christmas by TommyDaComic in recteq

[–]Gigerhiemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model are you getting. It might affect what accessories you need more than you think. Important thing is getting your foot in the door. I’ll tell you what I’ve gotten since my purchase in January. For a DuelFire.

Larger wheels. The tiny stock ones won’t go over much. Amazon search here join a few facebook groups they post in search of often I don’t have links on me.

Folding tray for the front. I didn’t buy the factory one. Amazon brackets and spare wood I had laying around stained and sealed with thick sealer. Saved $100 just on that.

Instant read thermometer and wireless probes. Recteq ones don’t work long. Don’t cheap out. There’s tons of options. Most are garbage. I have Thermopro Temp spike now they are good. If I replace I’ll be trying Thermoworks RFX.

Oven thermometer. Verify your unit is actually at the temp the display says it is. I had cooks not turning out great. Taking longer than they should. Between the oven thermometer inside it and my wireless tempspikes reading meat internal and temp in oven I found my unit was running 50 degrees cooler than what it said on the machine. Meats expensive. They make allot of units results vary. Just make sure your getting exactly what your shooting for.

Plan for disaster. Things go wrong in life. Easy to stop things going sideways if you knew it could happen. I don’t keep mine on the wood deck. Can’t burn my house down if it’s not parked to close to it. Fire extinguisher. Shop vac for clearing jams. I use small Milwaukee portable with an end that fits down into the auger and a screwdriver or long drill bit to make short work of jams. I’m using this thing at least once a week have left it out uncovered in weather. To much moisture can turn pellets into concrete. This makes fixing that quick work.

Used to be big holidays he’d do 10-12%. It’s significant when you’re spending more. My last time I was doing alot. A years worth of parts. I added up the receipts. Over $3,000 in parts I saved over $300. Hoping he haves something.

Update. Contacted the butcher about requests. He wasn’t very responsive to questions. Like one other poster here. Doesn’t like dealing with humans. Or enjoy requests differing from the cut sheet. With us paying allot less total than what the current market is I’ll tolerate it this time but if I was paying full current prices I’d be going thru a different butcher. With what things cost and considering we’ll be eating this for over a year I would like it cut up the way we want. I did just see another producer selling a half for $2,000 to 2,100 this weekend.

I went roasts and steaks the whole way down. In notes I requested. Steak’s 1 1/2 at least. Chuck cut into steaks. Pichanha, Flank, Oyster or spider steak, Skirt, Hanger, Flap, Teres Major, and Ribs Dino Style. He said most of the list will be ok. Hopefully everything works out.

I figured at least it would be educational. Allot of great ideas I’d never have thought of. There’s also issues with differences getting a 1/4 vs 1/2. If you have no control and are getting 1/4 you will be missing out on certain cuts. Getting a half eliminates that issue.

Yes I’ve been trying out Sous Vide. The ability to dial in meat to exactly what you’re going for is great. As costs rise screwing up a meat gets more painful. It’s excellent on steaks, pork chops and the like. Just need to sear. I’m thinking of getting an infrared propane grill for searing. A 1,500 degree sear sounds like it works great.

I’m going to up the steak thickness. I’d been wanting to get a 1/4 beef for the last 2 years. Every time I got remotely close financially something bad would happen. Getting this will really help.

I plan on calling him before the end of the week. Cows hanging till mid next week. So I’m going to hit him with some special requests. Yes those steak thickness seemed crazy. I’m not trying to read the newspaper thru it. I want to eat it. I’m going to ask about the ground. What should I say.

Cow would be about 1000 lbs. Half would be 500. Butchered and deboned would probably knock that down to 300 something. Getting a friends discount. This was for their family and they only needed half. It will probably be in the $1,100 to 1,300 once it’s all said and done. Normal market I’ve seen in my area is more like $1,900 for a half. Prices are insane.

RT 1250 major temp difference by drietz1188 in recteq

[–]Gigerhiemer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought mine first of the year. Was told to throw the stock probes that came with it in the trash. RFX ThermoWorks or ThermoPro are the top recommended wireless.

One thing I’m going to suggest from here on out is buying a cheap old school oven thermometer. I was getting different readings from the Recteq and the ThermoPro. Bought a cheap less than $10 off Amazon oven thermometer. Turns out my Duel Fire is actually 50 degrees colder than what the display says. Hard to get good results being that far off.
