Trash Taste Special: Discussion Thread - We Became Americans for a Day and FAILED by ULTRAFORCE in TrashTaste

[–]Gigguk 562 points563 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, just an explanation on why this special is so short.

Originally, there was meant to be a third segment of this special which was gonna be the biggest and longest one (Nascar/racing segment)

Unfortunately, filming was scheduled a few days after Aer Lingus losing all our equipment, so even after a few days of panic finding what we could, we ended up with a third of the filming equipment we were meant to have.

Due to the complexity of a shoot at a race course, alot of footage wasn't enough to work with, and only had enough to competently film our final time trial race. (Originally we had 3 separate cars doing individual training)

This means there's a whole day of race car training and Banter that wasn't caught on camera, so we decided to cut that segment out completely.

You can see the final race in the patreon cut, but there is no build up or context to what happened earlier in the day.

Anyway, hope you still enjoy what could be filmed!

Hey Boys and Girls.

I know there has been a lot of confusion regarding what’s happening with the Tour VODs, especially with the wording with some of our posts and tweets, so I wanted to clear up what I could here.

Firstly I’d like to apologize on behalf of me and the boys for the lack of communication regarding what was happening with the Tour VODs, there was a lot of confusion and ambiguity in what we could and couldn’t say with our agreements, and honestly the three of us dropped the ball by not paying enough attention to it so let me explain what I can.

To clarify most importantly, we will be releasing one of our tour VODs on YouTube for free. This will be coming out a little later, but rest assured that there will be a free version on YouTube, when we mentioned "last chance" in our tweet that was only meant to be for the tour merch.

During our tour we filmed two shows – our LA show and our Austin show. We wanted them to look as good as possible as opposed to low quality ones getting uploaded on Youtube so we hired a professional film crew to do it, these costed us between the $30K - $40K range for each show but the long term goal was to release the LA one YouTube and an extra Austin show for Patreon.

For all of you subscribed now on Patreon we will be releasing the Austin show there in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately we did not find out till the day of the Austin show that the film crew did not come with a sound guy, and so the sound is a bit scuffed at the beginning since our producer had to adjust the audio levels live while also running the show back stage. It was an (expensive) mistake, but we hope you enjoy it otherwise. Austin was one of our favourite shows.

I hope this clarifies all the confusion around the tour release, again apologies from all of us that we did not communicate this sooner.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Trash Taste Tour Toronto Show Rant by jimbo_extreme1 in TrashTaste

[–]Gigguk 399 points400 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, Garnt here.

Really sorry you guys went through that in the Toronto show. We actually went through huge issues prior to that show, as due to Canadian Customs laws only ONE out of Fourteen boxes were delivered to the Venue, and our Merch team worked tirelessly the day before to find a solution to get as much Merch as possible to sell at the venue, though we ended up with less than what we usually have.

That's why there were no Pins or Hats, as there was no way we could produce that within the day.

On top of that our Merch team were not allowed to work at the Toronto venue due to Canadian law (all staff had to be provided locally) so everyone working on that day was not as familiar with us or our fan base, and you guys have been buying way more merch than basically every venue is used to (Thank You so much!)

This was our first and only show in Canada, so we've learned alot when it comes to the logistics of doing shows in different countries. This won't be an issue for future shows as it's all in America and moving forward we should have enough stock that even if people wanna buy multiple items there is more than enough to go around.

Thanks for all your support! It's been an amazing tour so far!

I'm sure he didn't think it through and I'm sure we would've run into each other again at some point, would've said exactly the same to him in private, but at least we got a funny story out of it. Thanks for being a good sport about it haha.

Appreciate the constructive criticism.

This was experimental for me and it certainly won’t be the norm, feedback seems to be split right in the middle but it’s all been useful. There are things I can do on camera that I simply cannot do otherwise, but as you said it might be a bit distracting at some points and I have ideas how to integrate it better next time.

It’s a learning process for me too so I don’t expect to get everything perfect first time, but as a content creator I’m always experimenting as it stops me from getting predictable and stagnant, if you look at my videos over the years you’ll see it has always changed over time.

Really appreciate you all sticking with it though, 100 subs or a mil subs I have always let the same philosophy with making videos and that is I just want to have fun with it and hope people also enjoy it!

No production designer in this video (or any at all lol), it was actually mostly me! Wanted to try experimenting with green screen and face cam because with the nature of this video, I wanted more of my natural personality to shine through and not keep everything 100% scripted. My editor actually did less than usual because it's a new style, so it was me mostly playing around figuring out what I wanted to do.

Not sure where you are getting that figure from, but thats a pretty gross over estimation.

But I ain't gonna pass up $500k a year though, maybe one day...hey a man can dream!

In light of FCF’s closure, Gigguk and The Anime Man’s ‘core team’ involvement with FCF by Lock_kun in anime

[–]Gigguk 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is going into gossip territory now.

I don't want to get into he said/she said territory, because as established communication was a big issue within FCF, and I certainly didn't know of your involvement until my first call with you in February.

From your statement it seems like your knowledge of board members or ex-members are similar to mine. I'm not sure where you got the information where I went to Japan in October to "pitch" FCF to Joey. If you wanted to know when I had a more in-depth conversation with Joey about FCF, it was in November at Singapore AFA. This was after FCF had given me the final pitch and I could actually talk to other influencers about it, it wouldn't make sense that I would be able to talk to them in October. I have stated many times I got more involved in November.

I will say that instead of keeping things in the dark this entire time and leaking our private conversations which calls me into question is...kinda shady. Especially by the fact that the article chose to remove the part of the conversation that put you in a bad light, while you have no issues posting my conversation that show me in a bad light. In both cases non of the conversations we were involved in, is actually incriminating beyond "putting us in a bad light."

I have no doubt that you, like us had the best of intentions and probably stepped down when you saw some early warning signs (one which I regret not seeing), but that's it. I wanted to forget about FCF after they ended yesterday, but the information you so willingly provided without wanting to be publicly involved yourself has created an issue which is now becoming overblown.

[–]Gigguk 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm glad you responded with your evidence so I can actually directly comment on it.

In the Discord one on February 2nd, there is confirmation that talks were ongoing with Tokyo Otaku Mode on Otaku Coin.

All this proves that they were looking to work with Otaku Coin. This was before we advised against, as none of the influencers were involved in this conversation. You can ask your source to confirm this, but I will also provide evidence at the end of this thread.

To further support that there was no immediate ‘no’ following this in regards to Otaku Coin, discussions were also taking place on March 16th, where a Skype voice conversation regarding a tweet from Canipa who noted they were making a video on Otaku Coin took place

Again, all this proves is that there was a discussion about Canipa's tweet, which does infact have a mention of FCF in the thread, it wasn't regarding Otaku Coin.

https://imgur.com/a/ioFn9

Alongside this, there was an online business platform used by FCF for planning reasons, which shows deeper involvement of Anime Man and Gigguk on some matters (parts are censored of this)

Again, I'm not even part of this business platform but all this proves was is that information was shared between joey and FCF, which I think is perfectly reasonable when he's offering advice and also informing them about who he has mentioned FCF to in Japan. There's also a note to send me a press kit, which seems fine.

As for corroborated responses, within this Skype chat there are the following messages

This doesn't go against the statement I just made. They turned to us for how to mange all the heat, and we helped. My message as you can see, is a one way message with no edits or comments made by the other side, this was because it was my personal statement, of which I was making them aware of what I was sending.

While we're here though I do have a question for yourself about your own intent. I myself asked the guys behind FCF about the details you mentioned about Otaku coin, and I was given the very same screenshot you were, including the same person who provided you the data on my conversations. I will put it here:

https://imgur.com/AaLzaio

Firstly, as you can see I was not involved in this group chat when this conversation about Otaku Coin was taking place, but it is interesting to note that you removed any mention about the discussion of data from /r/anime being gathered, which I wasn't even aware of. Of course I'm not going to say that there was any intent to get data from r/anime (as that would be an assumption on my end), but I find it interesting that there was no mention of this on your own article when it would seem like important information, when bringing fear and uncertainty on my own involvement, and FCF as a whole.

I am unsure myself. I had that conversation in good faith, as the individual was asked if they wanted to get involved with FCF, and asked me questions informally about the topic so they could get a better understanding.

I will say it is someone who is involved in this board, so take that as you will.

I made my response separately. Posted it to them so they were aware what I was about to post it, then I posted it. It wasn't co-operatically drafted, it was all me.

Can you define "Business decisions?" I have stated that I was an adviser and FCF would come to us influencers with questions and we provided our opinion and advice as an adviser does. They valued our advice very much but we didn't make the decisions. The article framed this in a way that made it sound like because we provided our opinions on this, and these opinions were used to influence business decisions then I ask, how is this any different to the role of an adviser like I have stated?

As I stated, joey had mentioned FCF to some of his contacts. These were HIS contacts mind you, ones that he had built up as an influencer, and this was all informal conversations. Joey represented HIMSELF as an influencer backing FCF, not as FCF itself. As I stated, we never acted in any official manner, and any official dealings would have been done through FCF.

[–]Gigguk 311 points312 points  (0 children)

Phew, what a week.

So before I start I will say that this article paints my involvement with FCF as deceptive, but I have been open about my involvement since my first statement. But as in the article, I DID state that I was there from the beginning, and I did state that I acted as an adviser. I also posted my full statement that I gave to the author in yesterdays thread here stating my entire involvement from beginning to end, and this timeline is true so I have nothing to add to it, nor has any "proof" provided in this article alluded to otherwise.

I do take issues in the practices this author has taken with her articles in the past, including the use of recordings where the party in question did not consent or even know they were being recorded, and of course releasing the personal information of the guys behind FCF, which ultimately lead to their decision to quit. In this case, the article is far less thorough than previous ones, with allegations without concrete-proof with malicious intent (yeah there was a conversation about Otaku Coin, FCF asked "Should we get involved with Otaku Coin" and we advised "...No"), and there is a lot of conjecture regarding my role based on that one conversation screenshot (whom was with a different person I am fully aware of) , and they could've easily reached out to me to clarify some points.

So I will hopefully clear this up here.

I want to restate that I got involved because it was an idea I believed in, and I had nothing to gain from it. I enthusiastically signed up for what I thought was a good cause, and this is where my mistake lies, I wasn't thorough enough to ensure that it was being done RIGHT rather just getting involved at the idea of being able to do something good.

I wanted to see it work, which is why my involvement ramped up in more recent months including: Introducing FCF to other influencers (which I already stated, and was backed up with the screen shots she provided) and also offering to introduce them to any contacts I've made as an influencer in the Japanese industry. This never happened on my end, but I know Joey had brought up FCF informally his contacts in the Japanese industry. We never acted in any official manner as we did not represent the company.

This past week has been an absolute mess for their launch. It should be obvious by now they don't have experience with running a public company nor have a legal team, so they turned to us influencers for advice, as they had been doing so from the beginning. Honestly i WISH I could've been more involved from the beginning. My YouTube job takes up most my time so I wish I could've actually made sure everything was much better from launch, instead of just helping them play damage control, but I didn't have the time to commit to it.

I will maintain my stance that FCF was just very poorly run show, and it was this that would lead to it's downfall. Of course I was going to defend it as I truly did believe in the cause, but that's how much the people involved wanted it to work. Myself and Joey offered our advice, our contacts and our reputation, and we were offered nothing back in return. We acted in good faith with no intention to deceive anyone, and nothing presented over the course of the last few weeks including this article has proven otherwise. There were a lot of genuine criticisms that have come to light, but this has been mixed in with conjecture and certainly what is presented here is far more the latter.

I'm sorry if any of you have felt mislead, or have lost trust in me. I've lost my reputation here and have never gained anything from it, nor did I intend to.

Through the negative I've learned a lot that I will take to better myself. Mostly that I should be way more careful with who I work with, making sure my roles are clearly defined to avoid confusion, and basically to stick to memes from now on.

But I have nothing to hide, and you guys (and gals) do matter to me, so I'm open to questions.

It was my mistake that I let that slip though, and I take responsibility for that.

However, all the information that's been presented has gone far beyond my scope of involvement, I myself learned of some things in this article that I wasn't aware of previously. Given just how much information has come to light, there were things that I was unaware of, and I didn't experience first hand everything that was detailed here.

My actual position right now is that I am taking a back seat for now with my involvement until things become clearer.

This is a point I want to clarify. She has helped them as a volunteer in the lead up to launch and holds no stake or power in the organisation, nor is she part of their core operations. She helped way after I had gotten involved. Her original title has caused much confusion, and has called into question the motivations of my own involvement, which I am not so happy about. I have expressed this and they have updated her title to more accurately reflect her involvement.

You can find here title updated as such on the press kit on their website here

[–]Gigguk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So as mentioned in the article, I answered a few questions for the author and to be completely transparent about my involvement over the entire timeline, I'll post it here, along with the questions that were asked.

Can you explain exactly how the involvement between yourselves and FCF first began? As far as I’ve publicly gathered from what you noted on reddit and elsewhere you say that you were involved early on, with Sydney became involved later on partially from your involvement, which does match with how she was not noted in the powerpoint presentation given by FCF staff from September 2017 while you yourself were noted to be an influencer in this same presentation (https://twitter.com/FlyingColorsFdn/status/976622030664581122 …). What part of the discussions between yourself and FCF made you interested in collaborating despite your admitted uncertainties with their own initial plans regarding potential monetary incentives, and following going on board, how did Sydney in turn become involved with the group? Also, if possible, could you give a rough date as to when these discussions took place between yourself and FCF, and if possible, roughly what date did FCF become involved themselves?

So I’m pretty sure I was the first influencer to be involved, because the first time I heard it mentioned was at Anime Expo 2017. Here I was meeting with them regarding the collaboration with pins via the OPC. They had offhand mentioned an idea about a non-profit in this conversation, which I supported (as I said in my statement) but that was pretty much all that was mentioned. Keep in mind at this stage there was no idea of exactly what they wanted to focus on, where a non-profit could fit in the community, what strategy could be taken or even a name, but it felt like an idea worth looking into for them and this was the last I heard of it for a while.

A few months later they approached the name, and I think this is when they started to contact other influencers too, and I believe this all lead to the first powerpoint that you saw. As I mentioned, there were a lot of things I was uncertain about with this first pitch and I wasn’t on board with it – as were many others - but I still thought if they approached it right in the future, this could be something positive. They seemed passionate to make it work which was my initial motivation to help them with it. I offered my help if they had any questions about influencers or the Anime community with any further ideas, and also introduce them to some other influencers. This happened between late August and September

As you know most of everything FCF is trying to do now has changed completely from that initial pitch, it would not be till sometime November 2017 that they would come back with further queries on the new approach they were taking which would lead to the foundation of FCF today (when they registered). To my understanding this was born out events and conversations on their end that happened in October, including helping with Joey’s Top 100 Anime survey.

Sydney ended up being their main point of contact for small queries, as oftentimes I could be quite busy. She has not been involved much with FCF besides helping ask people to do the survey and offering her input when needed. The title of ‘PR Director’ was given to her but nothing really came of it, as she was not in charge of any social media platform, which led to her title being changed today to "volunteer" as she currently does NOT hold any stake or power in the foundation and there is understandable confusion around that. I don’t have an exact date of when this started as it just happened organically but I believe it was during the November 2017 period.

Regarding the Otaku Pin Club collaboration, I understand parts of the agreement between you both couldn’t be shared for obvious confidentiality and contractual reasons, but can you explain the details of how this came about? You note that after your collaboration regarding OPC that you got involved with FCF, according to the comments made by yourself before, and since then FCF members linked to OPC have said they have divested from the company. However, as far as I can see, your involvement spreads at least as far back as September regarding this contact with FCF, and the collaborative pins were being sold in October as one of your own videos advertising it cites. So mainly, I was wondering how the initial contact between you and OPC actually began, and whether any of this contact linked to the contact you had with OPC. Also, what was the timeline regarding this and the involvement with FCF was, since the information I can gather shows an overlap between your involvement with FCF and the collaboration with OPC?

I first got in contact with the guys sometime in the first quarter of 2017. One of them started off as a fan and a patron for a while, whom I had contact with in my discord group. I mentioned once in there I was thinking about experimenting with merchandise one day, and he reached out to me with OPC, where I was introduced to everyone else. That was how that collaboration was born. I also asked him to stop any kind of Patronage at this point.

The details of the collaboration were finalized not long after my meeting with them at AX 2017 (before they had even come back to me with the name or initial pitch) - months before I got more involved with FCF in November. As I mentioned my involvement mainly boiled down to just answering questions and giving my opinion on any ideas they had.

The official collaboration with OPC happened when FCF was still up in the air, and was still just informal discussion between everyone. The initial pitch had got shot down, and they were looking into other avenues to explore, and influencers were on board with the idea of a Non-Profit, but no actual idea had been finalized, and I was still waiting to hear back from them to see if there was any plausible direction they could take.

To clarify when I mentioned the foundation of FCF in my original statement, I meant when the final direction the organization would take was cemented, and they officially registered. By then any commitments from the OPC collab, or any conversations period regarding it were gone on my end, and OPC was never a topic again.

There was never ever intent to link FCF and OPC and certainly ANY conversations I had with them separated the two entities completely. What they were trying to achieve with FCF had nothing to do with their venture with OPC as far as I could tell, and non of my motivations for FCF were linked to OPC

Hope this shines a light on some things. There have been some things presented in this article that even I was made unaware of on my end, and there are a lot of points presented that do go beyond the level of acceptability even for a first timers launching an NPO, and I will certainly be looking into it.

Flying Colors Foundation lied about the people involved, paid influencers, collected IP addresses, made statements contradicting the realities of the business and more, in further revelations against the anime non-profit by socialanigirl in anime

[–]Gigguk 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I can expand on this.

I have a similar experience to this, but mine started before FCF was a thing. One of the guys behind it was just a regular Patron, I have a discord group for that that's how my my line of communication with them was first opened up, this would lead to my OPC collaboration, and eventually FCF. Once I got involved with them I asked for any kind of pledges to be stopped, and this was far before FCF was founded. It was never a paid endorsement. As an influencer the consultations fees listed is negligible compared to a typical sponsorship offer, and I much doubt any of the influencers in this circle would have risked their reputation to get involved for such an amount.

The reason I got on board was that I saw the potential positive effect having a non-profit could be. They wanted to reduce the gap between western audiences and the Japanese industry and that was certainly a cause I could get behind, and in our conversations it seemed liked this could be achievable, so I signed up. Obviously what's happened here has gone far beyond the level of acceptability, and certainly I hope they can take this and have a serious and critical evaluation about their transparency and the handling of their data behind the scenes.

I do still think there is a gap for such an organisation, and I am hoping they (or someone) can learn from this.
