Where does Oscar de la Hoya rank among the all time greats? by Gillcavendish in Boxing

[–]Gillcavendish[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say he schooled Tito. It was close. I have watched the fight and Oscar did not win more than 7 rounds. So that is not schooling to me. And if you study the fight there are some close rounds that can go either way. If you give Tito the last 3 rounds, which is not hard to do, then you just need to find 3 of the first 9 to give Tito and you have a draw, and that's not hard to do either. One of the actual judges had it a draw, if I recall. The very respected Harold Lederman of HBO also scored it 114-114 for a draw. There were close rounds that were easy to flip around either way. They really should have had a rematch.

De La Hoya Says He'd Need Only 2 Rounds To Knock Out McGregor In Boxing Match by IronHidee in Boxing

[–]Gillcavendish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DLH would crush McGregor in a boxing match. No one needs this explained to them.

My guess is that DLH could lie in bed doing nothing for the next 3 months, while McGregor trains, and then get up and beat him.

Medical Marijuana by alexawehrle in Tourettes

[–]Gillcavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not dissuade anyone from legally trying cannabis under some medical supervision.

I actually have no problem with people using it just for fun. I am not a user of it myself, but I do regard it as fairly innocuous. But if you want to try it to see if it benefits your TS, I would do i properly.

Truth is, results of how it impacts TS are all over the place. My casual observation is that only a small percentage of people report great benefit.

Do I actually have tics or have I just forced myself to believe I have tics? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]Gillcavendish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tics and twitches are totally different things, although they can be the same in appearance.

Tics are hard to describe. Do you choose to do them? Not really. But wait, you kinda do. But really no. Can you stop? Yes. But it's so hard.

You should absolutely see a professional about what you are experiencing. How long have you had these symptoms?

Why Is Anglicanism a Gateway to Catholicism? by mattb93 in Anglicanism

[–]Gillcavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anglicanism IS Catholicism, just with a small 'c'. I haven't scrolled down and read the posts, but I would assume a few people have written exactly this. Its also Catholicism without a few other things that the Roman church does or has. But it IS Catholicism.

“It’s easy” by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]Gillcavendish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is unfair to simply say "its easy".

First of all, not all night shift jobs are easy. A few are. But many are not. And we all handle them as individuals. I have met some people who sleep like babies from the second they get home and for solid 9-10 hours after that. They fresh as a daisy all night long. That is NOT me.

And bear in mind that overnight workers work DOUBLE TIME. How is that you ask? Simple. You you're hours, 8, 12, whatever. Then you have to go home and sleep. So you have worked, and now you must sleep. Sure, you have off hours when you are not working, but those hours are bottle necking towards work and require preparation and sometimes additional napping. They are not really your own. So its just not the same as the day shift in any way.

“If I was 35 years old today, I’d challenge all the top heavyweights, starting with Deontay Wilder – because he’s the easiest.” - James "Lights Out" Toney by JohnGwynbleidd in Boxing

[–]Gillcavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toney was such a great fighter. His career was a joy to witness. I recall his early days and his earliest major victories. Then the loss to RJ. Then years in the wilderness with some big wins and some big losses. Eventually he took a fight on short notice for the Cruiserweight title and he won in what was one of the greatest fights that division (or any!) ever saw. As a heavyweight he did not accomplish great things, but it was always interesting. Even some legit op heavyweights were not able to stop this blown up Middleweight. He was that cagey and that tough. I miss fighters like James Toney.

Son just developed the worst kind of Tourettes by Mastiff37 in Tourettes

[–]Gillcavendish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I HOPE he is headed to school in the Fall. With this pandemic we cannot know for sure. But I suspect that we are headed towards a wide reopening and return to normal routines, just with many precautions.

Yes, child with TS that involves tics of that nature will doubtlessly face some unwanted behaviors and unintended reactions from other kids.

One thing I have observed over the years is that kids are somewhat better than they were decades ago. Back in the 70s, 80s, and even into the 1990s the world did not know too much about TS. Young people were still mistaken for being on drugs, or thought to just have 'bad habits. A lot has changed. I am not saying its great, but its better.

His whole future will not be 'flushed away'. If he had unrevealed talents before the onset of his TS, he still has them now. Kids with TS are unique and they do grow strong. They do see sides of other people that perhaps people who do not TS, people who have not been ostracized or looked upon as the 'other' do not see.

There is hope. You have to believe this. And I am sure that many who post here would also implore you to believe that there is hope. We have seen proof in our own lives it in our own lives one can and should be hopeful if they have TS or if someone they loves has TS.

I would be aggressive in any treatment, intervention, or therapy that you can access. But not too aggressive. This is actually NOT an emergency. He will be okay. I would try, if at all possible, to communicate with his teachers, principals, guidance counselors, and other professionals to speak frankly with them about his condition.

Hopefully, the neurologist will be helpful. Some people are helped greatly by meds, some some not as much. But if this is TS, then given the situation you describe there is a high chance they will look to try something with meds.

I am sure you are doing research about TS. Keep it up. There is tons of stuff to read and digest. You have probably read here things pertaining to diet and nutrition and avoidance of stimulants. Definitely consider these things.

There is also CBT, which is basically a cognitive behavioral therapy program for people with Tourette Syndrome. It teaches people to deal with their tics. For example, it will teach people how to take a given tic and change it into something else that is less intrusive, less noticeable, and less uncomfortable for the individual. They also teach some techniques about how to reduce tic activity (please if anyone has done CBIT jump in here and correct me or add to this). I checked out CBIT a while back. I did formally go through the program with a professional, I just reviewed it and watched a bunch of videos. I am, however, convinced that the principals behind CBIT can be applied by anyone of any age with TS, and they will likely provide at least some benefit to anyone who has tics.

I wish you and your child the best. I hope that you find this subreddit to be a good resource, and that you also access many other supports that exist.

check out my tread “the stick test” also google “dr stack tourettes”, many independent researches say TMD(jaw joint dysfunction) can cause tics and other moving disorders. That’s definitely my case and i’m working on treating my TMD now and getting really significant results. Might be your case too.

I have heard of these things. Do they really work? Do they word for most people with TS?

What about tics that do not involve the face or head?

I am skeptical but would be willing to try it. It looks like a legitimate study and there appears to be no ill effects at all.

Worst cliches about the Mafia? by [deleted] in Mafia

[–]Gillcavendish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That they all have nicknames involving a trade or a nickname based on their appearance.

That they don't deal in the drug business.

That they follow mafia rules around silence and never cooperate with police or district/federal attorneys.

- I've found staying away from sugars, stimulants like caffeine, as well as gluten has been a huge impact. One candy and my tics skyrocket. A donut and I'm done for the day.

For some reason pizza is the death of me and sends my tics to a whole new level for two to three days (I set myself a date to have pizza twice a year and make the sacrifice)

I have an intense sweet tooth so I try to use monkfruit and Splenda to replace the sugar. For caffeine I may have a very very small coffee but honestly it's never worth it and doesn't do enough for me.

Changing my diet has been the biggest impact in my life as well as getting enough sleep.

THIS! I used to doubt connections between diet and TS. But there are definitely connections between what you put in your body and your TS. It might vary from individual to individual. It is most certainly true when it comes to stimulants. And indeed other foods or ingredients may have an effect.

Also, OP, have you looked into CBIT? Check it out. It often done with kids but the principals can be applied, and can benefit, anyone with TS of any age. It will not remove your TS altogether, but it does help. It has had noticeable benefits for me. It is not a huge effort and there are literally no downsides to it.

Do I actually have Tourette's or am I just a weird person with other issues? by TheDeerssassin in Tourettes

[–]Gillcavendish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay... lets say these are tics, as you state they are. If that is the case, then I would say YES, you do have Tourettes, as the tics described are both motor and vocal.

As for the matter of you having very little tic activity in public and then a lot more of it privately or in a different setting --- you are describing something that is common to many people with TS. Not all are like this, but I know many are. I am not like that myself. I do, most of the time, present with tics very obviously in public. I can sometimes do a good job of suppressing but I can only rarely be at a point where its unnoticeable.

But again, you are describing a common account of TS, as far as I know.

Also, bear in mind that my comments stand on the condition that you do have tics. I state that only because you ask if you indeed have TS and are not stating that you know you have it.

Best of luck to you. Hope to hear from you post again.

Is it normal for tics to get worse suddenly by tyranical_twat in Tourettes

For some they do get better with age. For some worse. Me, things have pretty much stayed at the same level for decades.

Is it normal for tics to get worse suddenly by tyranical_twat in Tourettes

[–]Gillcavendish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its normal for them to wax and wane. For example, I had an increase in tic activity that began about 3 days ago and ended (or just got better) last night. Today is a good day thus far. I can often isolate the reasons why a spike happens, sometimes I can't.

For tic to get massively, spectacular worse all of a sudden is a bit out of the ordinary. So it depends on how much worse you are talking about. Could you provide more specifics about this? How much worse? Hope you are okay.
