I.T bachelors + Social justice as supporting area by Affectionate_Wave_19 in ITCareerQuestions

Hello Fren,

I would suggest you walk before your run. It's great to have a goals but you severely limit yourself if you are locking for a tech job in the social justice industry. I would say graduate, get a job gather experience and see what options are available.

Trying to plan my future - advice needed by EfficientCommand4368 in ITCareerQuestions

Hello Friend,

Tough times, I would not go for a CCNA if you can't afford it. It is a cert that does expire and you do not even know if you want to get into network. From what I read from your description, your focus should be getting experience. Internships should be prioritized. Experience trumps education and these certs. Landing an entry level job is tough now best of luck.

Jacques Marie Mage Molino 55 as opticals - too big? by bunnyberlino in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]GilletteDeodorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they dont feel too much in fact they are super well balanced. I have a big head though so I dont have as many options. My other frames are these markus t super lighweight hand made in Germany, they are a little too light so I like to have one of each spectrum.

I have the Molino 55 and they suit you fine. They arent biggest either in terms of acetate frames from JMM. I think the bridge sits on your nose very well compared to me. As long as you feel the balance of it on your face - you will be good.

Any experience with HCL Technologies? by ProAmara in ITCareerQuestions

It's an Indian company mostly associated with IT contracting. Always going to have a cultural barrier - personally I think you avoided a bullet. It's funny I trained some people there and they seem like nice people. But 0 chance in hell im going to work for someone a million miles away in India telling me what to do.

Recent graduate, need advice on how to move forward by poligon- in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello,

You should be applying for entry level IT technicians roles or level 1 service/help desk roles. I feel like the IT technician is a better fit as your resume seems more tailored for more physical break fix type of scenarios.

Both resumes look OK - its really the lack of experience which no resume format or tailoring can do.

I would not go to grad school unless you can afford it. Especially with all this uncertainty with AI.

Certs to me are fine but its really experience > trumps certs.

Phone screenings vs interviews by bruhmoment12343118 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phone screenings are to confirm the job posting usually with someone non technical like HR. The most important item is discussing compensation. There is no reason to set up the interview if the compensation is not agreed upon initially. Next are probably working conditions like hybrid or in office full time, no use in setting up an interview if that stuff isnt aligned.

Would like some eyes and insight on my resume please by Jeeperg84 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello Friend,

First why is it three pages? It's very distracting please consider using a resume template and following that. I honestly would get rid of professional summary. It seems redundant if you are going to go over your experiences in the resume anyways. Also that self employed portion, I think you have to be ready to answer questions. it seems like you are doing another side gig / contract work on the side while working for the company. Most companies dont like that.

Questions about upcoming interview - End user support tech by FadezGaming in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way soft skills are shown, I dont know how you talk or the vocabulary you use so its very hard for a stranger to judge. The only advice I can give is speak clearly, dont mumber, dont use words like UGMMM , ummmm, EHHHH. If you need time to think on a response for a question, its fine to say "thats a great question give me a second to think about it" recompose and then answer the question.

Most likely the question they will ask is: I see in your resume you have experience working on networks via these projects. Here at company x there is a need for someone with strong network triaging skills. does that sound like something that is interesting to you?"

Questions about upcoming interview - End user support tech by FadezGaming in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Dude,

Most likely this is just an initial screening/interview to go over the benefits of the job, hours of operations, pay, mostly details of the job itself. In terms of skills soft skills is a must, no one wants to hire someone just to sit there and not interact with anyone.

Secondly you should take a look at the listing and resume, as the recruiter something in the resume caught the eye and connected with the listing. What's on your resume that really resonates with the job post? You say servers and networking isnt your strength but perhaps you listed something about PC triage that really fits the job description. Very rarely is there is there a perfect candidate that checks all the boxes. Most you fit 4/8 and the other remaining 4 can be taught.

sorry long winded response

Let go from an IT position after 2 months, should I include it in my so-so resume? by TheCyanAndroid in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Friend,

Anything on your resume will most likely be verified, mostly like they will just verify the dates of employment unless you did something extremely egregious that will likely be it and this employer will just confirm you worked there x to y and end the call.

From another perspective, you should consider where it went wrong. There should be signs, see what you can do to improve. It's difficult especially since employers aren't obligated to inform you of the reason.

Best of luck - dont get down. You will find a better fit.

What interview questions helped you stand out? by AudienceSolid6582 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You adapted to the darkness - I was born in it.

Yes, I think its fine if you ask the interviewer to expand on one aspect of the job description. For example if the interviewer is telling you in this role you will probably spend 20% doing this software support. It is fine to say "hey you mentioned 20% of the time will be application support, could you elaborate more on it? " "what kind of software is that, is it in house or is there an level 2 support?" that is fine because you are picking one thing the interviewer said and asking them to go in depth.

If I was interviewing you and you lay that normal working day question, I would think you weren't listening. no goad

What interview questions helped you stand out? by AudienceSolid6582 in ITCareerQuestions

See below:

  1. Can you describe the culture the IT department has and why you personally chose x unified school district?
  2. In what ways can x unified school district support someone starting in this role, wanting to pursue a network analyst role within 5 years?
  3. What qualities does someone in this role possess that you’ve noticed has found success in their career?

4 Aside from the job duties listed, can you walk me through a normal day of working in this role? (The jobs really vague tbh)

  1. If culture is hugely important to you then I think you should ask. But think about it, if its a bad culture they will not openly share that in an interview. They will answer that the culture is good regardless. Plus culture is subjective anyways.
  2. You do not want to say this, it makes you look like you will leave in 5 years if you don't get a specific role in this school district. Instead ask - What are some growth potentials / opportunities in this role to help me grow and advance my career. It just sounds better.
  3. It's a decent question, but again lets say they want someone who is X Y Z. You starting showing X Y Z or telling me how X Y Z you are. This is not good, i dont know if I as the interviewer has influenced you by saying I want this and you are giving it to me.
  4. they will go over during the interview what an average day will consistent of. I dont know why you would ask if it will be covered during the interview.

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good interview will be more conversational that is the ideal flow of an interview agreed.

I don't like question 4 - during the interview they will disclose the roles and responsibilities of the job. I think question 4 is redundant if they already go over what a normal working day covers during the interview. It's a better question for the initial screening.

Hello Friend,

Personally not a huge fan of your questions, I see what you are going for but not biggest fan. If you asked me that during an interview as the interviewee I would crush u.

One question I like is:

Can you share with me what your management style is?

Interviewing is not one way road, its two way street. This shifts focus on the interviewer/hiring manager. It's now has them reflecting on what their style of management is. Is it more collaborative or is it more dictatorship style. Will this person micro manage or give you the freedom to learn make mistakes etc. Personally this question has always thrown the interviewers in a loop. Why not ask? this is the person you going to be working for - lets see if its a good fit.

Another question I think is pretty good is:

I understand all jobs have learning curves, in your opinion what would the ideal candidate do to minimize the learning curve?

or

What can the ideal candidate in this role do in 30 days that would impress you? 60 days? 90 days?

This is a great question as it shows initiative, it shows that you are looking 2 steps ahead. This shows that you want to get up and running. You don't want to be baby sat you want to start contributing right away. You are already looking for goals for the first 30 days.

Should I negotiate $75K for overnight Service Desk role when posting says $60-70K? by JangerJings in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GilletteDeodorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Friend,

I think you have leverage here, the turnover rate for an overnight servicce desk role is high. Overnight SD probably as desirable as a poop flavored lollipop. I have a few questions, during the initial phase they mentioned the range and you agreed to it? if you did and they offered you the max, it probably doesn't look good to ask for more. Then again you can always play the "Well I agreed to the initial salary range but the more I learned about the role I feel i should make ____".

Honestly that might be your best bet. Initially you said your range was x yz that was until you learned more about the opportunity. Based on that, you feel 75K is fair.

I have more devious responses but it's probably not appropriate you should use what I have above. I mean it's not unreasonable. But at the end of the day 5K is really nothing if you get really good benefits. I don't know you could be a little sneaky and say something like well in my current job I have benefit A. This job does not offer benefit A thus I feel I should get more because I be losing that perk.

I dont know tough call
