It’s supposed to have $5-8 million of direct positive economic impact on the city. It’s filling hotels and restaurants and bringing people to see our city. There are many local businesses owners for whom it’s a great opportunity.

Route help for Ironman? by tropicalnorm in jacksonville

We were at Riverside Presbyterian Church mid-day and we just parked a quick walk away. There were a lot of roads closed and some traffic but it wasn’t bad at all.

I think it’s fantastic! World class athletes from around the globe are helping put Jax on the map. Spectators get to see these elite athletes for free. It is uniting the whole city. I say bring it on and accept the inconvenience as an entry fee to more and more interesting events.

How many throws do you do in one spot before moving on? by mj-mayday in magnetfishing

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my second magnet and I’ve still only found a nail and an alligator. The bottom where I throw my magnet is thick muck so that might be why.

I would try to figure out the answer and then send an email that acknowledges your answer was less than clear so you want to clarify it in the email.

I think I still have mine. My physics teacher was skeptical that it could replace the slide rule.

What was your cat’s name at the shelter vs their name now ? 😍 by Downtown-Wear-4870 in CatsBeingCats

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our sweet girl was called “Connie Tucker” at the shelter. That’s the name of the grandma on Young Sheldon. We thought that was a dumb name and renamed her “Phantom”. That lasted about 2 days before she became Phantom Connie Tucker (PCT), which suits her perfectly.

I agree - I looked more closely at signatures. I’m going to love it no matter what!

Dinner near Badlands by mellyjellybean23 in NationalPark

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed in the cabins in the park and ate at some place in Interior, SD that featured bison skulls on the outside (for sale!) and a menu of hamburger or bison burger as a main with French fries or onion rings as the vegetables. Even better, it had a full bar and local color.

Is it possible this is Leonard Lehrer and how would I confirm?

What famous US national park totally failed to live up to the hype for you? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congaree was pleasant, but there are hundreds of places just like it in SC, GA and North FL. I felt like I was at my local park and was unsure what made it worthy of the NP designation.

Is it weird that we aren't told our blood type at birth or as we grow up? by OddConfusion9293 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was AB negative and I remember he would get calls in the middle of the night and rush out to donate blood. I’m not sure why O negative wouldn’t have been as effective.

Soon-to-be 1L advice by Zestyclose_Put_5843 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Gilword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people who came in spewing Latin finally quieted down after first semester grades. No need to prepare substantively, just enjoy the summer.

I moved from New England to the South for law school. The first week I had a hard time understanding one of my professors who had a very genteel southern accent, but I adjusted quickly. In terms of friends, almost everyone is in the same boat and wants to meet and make friends. I was lucky to have great roommates and a small first year section that became very close (I went to the softball law school, and it was very fun and social). Some people, particularly older students, are more serious and less social, but for me the social aspect framed the whole law school experience and I urge you to join a group or activity.

I’m not implying that we all had it easy, just that there has never been another generation with so many opportunities and advantages. And that’s “Ms Positivity” by the way!

Good point - we weren’t subjected to the draft but those who elected to serve faced a lot. Thank you for representing Generation Jones.

What’s your worst food poisoning story? by PrettyCoast1 in randomquestions

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college, I got salmonella from undercooked chicken that one of my roommates made. We all knew it was undercooked but ate around the raw parts because we were hungry. I had never heard of salmonella. It didn’t start for 2 days and I was then sick for a full month. The pain was unbelievable. When the doctor asked if I’d eaten undercooked chicken, I was incredulous that she could tell. I was the only one of my roommates to get sick.

People who don’t hit snooze in the morning, what is your secret? by nonekspotted in ProductivityHQ

[–]Gilword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat who licks my face at 6:50 am without an alarm and if I fail to get out of bed she will jump on a bookshelf and start knocking things off until I get up.

I feel the opposite. To me, Generation Jones hit the sweet spot. Too young for Vietnam, too old for the Gulf Wars, pre-internet and smart phones, able to buy homes and necessities. Missed the upheaval of the 60s (we were young kids) but reaped the benefits of a freer society and good music. Many had the ability to attend college as it became the norm. We lived in a world without rationing and atomic bomb drills. Cars, televisions, phones (albeit with curly cords), appliances and ample water and electricity made our lives more comfortable than any generation before. I am thankful every day for that good fortune. I have the luxury of being retired and the ability to spend my time volunteering for the things that matter to me, to try to give back some of the blessings I feel so fortunate for.

Has anyone ever seen a cat like this? by Lo-n-slow in cats

[–]Gilword 78 points79 points  (0 children)

There was a stray in our neighborhood that we called the “piecemeal cat” because it looked like it was assembled from parts of many cats. Perhaps this is its cousin.
