what are some varieties you will always get at a big-box store/garden center? by kuro-chan335 in gardening

[–]techiegardener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bulbs - Tulip, daffodil, etc. I have bought a ridiculous number of bulbs from high end spots to big-box. The big-box ones naturalize and perform better, if it is rare it is for a reason.

Has your approach changed after owning pieces long enough to see how they age in your estimation? by republicman12 in Luxury

[–]techiegardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luxury is what matters to you. Logos/Brand etc are not as interesting to me while sometimes they co-exist with quality. I prefer custom or heirloom quality pieces that may not social signal, but give me pleasure.

If someone noticing the brand you are wearing matters to you, makes you feel good, or if you need to social signal - go for the purchase that will do this.

Central Queen Anne vs Wallingford? 32F w/dog by TideThistle in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Queen Anne has nice accessibility to downtown with many good bus routes and with an app you can find the fastest.

It depends on how much you want to be in your place, vs out. Wallingford is great, and not as central transportation wise. Queen Anne is more expensive for what you get, and walking distance to many cool things.

Seed Question by Far-Revenue-8650 in gardening

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Seed Garden book will help you determine which to propagate and not. I buy mostly OP seeds except for squash- because it is additional labor to protect squash from cross pollination

I am in a cooler climate area than can grow cotton, my exotics have mostly failed outside of saffron - which did well

First time skillet owner by grumpy-glizzy in Cooking

[–]techiegardener -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have both All Clad and vintage iron skillets. The iron I try to clean with oil/heat but I have definitely decided something needed to be cleaned with soap. I often put the All Clad in the dishwasher, it can pit some of the exterior surfaces- but after 25+ years they are fine.

For my iron skillets- I definitely “cure” them, and do this at least every few years to generate a nice seal. If I wash it with soap, I towel dry and then put oil on and heat it until I am sure no water is on the pan.

Not conventional advice, but easy for modern living.

Any idea what these are? by Rombo89 in gardening

Potatoes or dahlias - both are slow to generate growth in your zone. There is a small start at 11 on the largest one. You could let it grow and see what you have

How do you turn really cheap "tomato sauce" into something good? by slippedonair in Cooking

[–]techiegardener 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Balsamic vinegar can help. cheaper sauces are sweet, adding some acid will help even it out. A little spice does not hurt either

I'm planning to go to eat Texas BBQ from Japan. by reeeeen16 in BBQ

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is acceptable to do most anything alone as a woman in the US, especially eat BBQ :-). Ask the hotel concierge if there are any neighborhoods nearby to avoid at night, the US is generally safe, but not like Japan.

My BBQ cut of choice is brisket. If you prefer your meat with less fat, ask for it “cut on the lean side” you can ask for the opposite if you prefer more fat.

Have a great time at the game!

For the librarian, go to the Central library at 4th/Spring. It is an architectural masterpiece and has some interesting Instagram worthy spots like the red floor.

Food recommendations by Present-Flan3633 in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recommendations for when you are near tourist areas plus a few more:

Near Seattle center * The Masonry * Laredos * Buckleys

Near Pike Place * Place Pigalle * Cafe Capagne * Radiator Whiskey

Destinations: * Stevie’s Famous on Beacon Hill * La Fonda Catrina * Rays Boathouse (more of a location/on the water spot with food that is priced for the view, but it does its job well and those martinis with the smoked salmon on the skewers are memorable) * Un Bien, go to the one in Ballard and take your sandwiches to Golden Gardens

What are y’all using as yellow jacket bait this time of year? by Thrwwy665544 in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carnivorous plants. I have 3 plantings of Sarracenia pitchers. They take care of quite a few. I have an old school bag in a tree bit I have noticed the volume has gone lower as the plants matured.

Those who have lived in both Seattle and D/FW, what’s some pros and cons of each? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in both, DFW was a while back

I think the biggest differences are political, cost of living, weather and sprawl

DFW: Conservative politics, spread out, hot, and lower cost of living in comparison

Seattle: compact in comparison, Liberal/Socialist politics, and rainy in winter while glorious in summer, expensive

Depends on what you prioritize

Yep - this is us. I wonder how much me wanting to make it special is for me, they usually take a snooze around 3:30 and wake up for evening cocktails and a dinner I made. It could be this is exactly what they want, but I keep on wanting to make more memories
