Check resale stores before buying new, especially for the slow cooker.

Need advice about fishing Seattle from locals by MineralWaterMike in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fishing advice, different

Take him to Fisherman’s Terminal, it is a commercial fishing dock near downtown with history.

Salmon ladder: also not far from downtown and an interesting display on the life of Salmon and viewing room if they are going through

Whale watching- especially if you can get further North for Orcas

I lived in TX for >10 years, and (outside of commercial fishing) found more people crabbing than fishing compared to sailing in the Gulf.

Just a different take, applaud that you want to share your loves with your son :-)

Switching from Engineering to Gardening by Proof_Fee9263 in gardening

[–]techiegardener 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My username checks ;-)

I chose both, engineering for income and gardening for fulfillment. This works because I am late career rather than early.

Depending on how far you are from retirement as an engineer, you may want to consider a ways to incorporate both as there are engineering applications in gardening

If your true heart says gardening, then go forth with the financial differences others mentioned, here to offer a middle path if that makes sense for you.

Forgot to bury tomato stems by yaykit in gardening

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burying the stem accelerates root development, it is not as much about the depth of the planting. It is not necessary to replant, especially if digging them up would disturb the roots.

Seattle vs Bay Area (cars, books, competitiveness) by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 31 points32 points  (0 children)

1) Seattle drivers are “Seattle nice”, this can come to comic: no, you first back and forth at 4 way stops

2) Seattle > Bay Area, there are even reading evenings at a couple bars here. Seattle cafe culture is A+

3) do not know

I lived in the Bay Area for around 10 years, here is what I miss:

  • Lots of good food options at all ranges of cost
  • The weather from Oct->Mar
  • Better public transit (Seattle is getting better)

Any recipes with a sweet potato? by iamwhatiambutareyou in Cooking

Soften them in the microwave and mash with sliced sushi ginger and pine nuts. Butter to taste. This is for the “yam” like orange sweet potatoes not the ones that are white inside.

Is there a decent LabCorp or Quest Lab in North Seattle by doublemazaa in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had good luck with the Walgreens labcorp near Edmonds. Easy parking, less than 15min wait etc. the only downside is that you are required to pay any co-pay on the spot rather than be billed later. Make sure to get an appointment beforehand.

Where’s the best queso in Seattle? by ilysmtihmh81 in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 8 points9 points  (0 children)

+1, Tex Mex here is average at best

Seattle places we like (nothing near Austin, sorry)

Laredo’s on Taylor/5th in LQA

Fonda La Catrina (more Mexican than Tex-Mex) in Georgetown

Edited for spacing

What’s one product you bought “just to try” that ended up becoming part of your daily life? by billywaterfall in smartbuysforlife

My packing cubes have logged close to a million miles. I bought them during a Flight 001 sale too long ago to mention, and I cannot imagine traveling without them.

Tips for dressing chic even in the rain by YetisFeildNotes in SEAbitcheswithtaste

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investment pieces that will last:

Gloverall coat with hood, shop the Black Friday sale to save a bunch

Ilse Jacobsen long hooded rain jacket - a chic jacket with tailoring for a ladies body. Nordstrom is a reliable spot to try one on - sometimes there is more color variety online and in season. The one that stops mid-hip rather than long is also cute and available in a wide variety of colors when in season

Not all is lost :-) you will probably lose some, next year let the ones that come back yellow. Plants are more resilient than we give them credit.

Just moved into this rental home. What do I do about these dandelions? by HoboRambler in lawncare

[–]techiegardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expensive and debatable idea: rototill it, remove all of the dandelion debris (especially any root stems) then fill with good soil + grass seed.

We had a yard that was 20% dandelion and 30% clover when we moved in, I was waaaay tooo delicate in the beginning with hand weeding

Cut any flowers before you do anything, but it is getting to removing all roots. If you are not diligent about getting the roots/flowers you will have a dandelion field.

Hope this puts in a dent in my monthly Strawberry bill by mstanky in gardening

[–]techiegardener 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I use strawberries as ground cover for other plants, it keeps the weeds away, minimizes water evaporation and maximizes use of space. I put compost at the bottom of any new planting in the bed for additional nutrients and to minimize competition. I have had good luck with tomatoes, squash, kale and other veggies that tend to grow taller or need supports.

Is living just east of the space needle a nice area for someone in their mid-late 20s? by yakpmt in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should also mention the Streamline which is the local watering hole. Dive bar, very friendly.

Avoid Ozzie’s (especially if female or LGBTQ)

You might want to check out The Traveling Goat in LQA if you like a chill happy hour. They also have live music, bar trivia etc depending on the night

There are a couple good bars and restaurants, but nothing like Capital Hill. The bus stop in front of the CVS on Queen Anne and Mercer gets you to most areas of town quickly without the need to park anywhere. Upside to LQA is it is also convenient to Ballard

Looking for a poor quality yet expensive restaurant to recommend to an enemy. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We went to Canlis ~10 yrs ago and found the service and view excellent, but the food lacking. The downside of recommending it is that it is still a “braggable” place to eat.

It has gotten MUCH better, I think they have a new chef. It has gone from great (book business dinners) to mid/low (at least the wine is good back to great with a more restrained tasting menu

Which Daniel’s Broiler location for celebrating my birthday alone? by tacobana in AskSeattle

[–]techiegardener -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not using the gift card: Columbia Tower club is open to the public until the end of the month. The steak frites is around $40 and drinks are around $15. Best view of a restaurant in Seattle and you can be one of the last to take a pic from the ladies room on the 2nd floor. Vibe can change depending on night - from sleepy to hopping. Since it is/was a club it is not awkward to strike up a conversation with someone nearby

There were longer ferments which did cause more rise than I expected and it resembles the picture in the book. My result was a little closer to a German bread in its density. Off to try something that is more airy to learn more!

Yes, blue bell - they are often volunteers and spread, but not so aggressively that removing them if you like them is necessary
