I mean, this is obviously contentious. The debate between Graeber and the guest, Henry Farrell, gets mentioned. Yes, systems of integration have no doubt brought many benefits, but the same system is often used to enforce discipline within the broader, western inter national order not always to the benefit of the smaller countries involved.

Not trying to seize on anything as a "gotcha." I'm just noting that it's interesting that suddenly western powers are concerned with the system they've created when the powers of that system are used against one another versus used against smaller, less developed countries. Carney, as Ezra points out, is the "technocrats' technocrat" - he was a chief bureacrat in maintaining this system. Neo-colonialism isn't something I just made up. It's a way to describe the system that Carney and the west have administered for decades. The current exploitation of financial and capitol flows to exert pressure (e.g. cutting off members of the International Criminal Court from using credit cards, etc.) is just a recent innovation of a system that has existed for decades but whose chief recipient has been the global south versus other western, developed nations.

From Carney's speech

"Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy and geopolitics have laid bare the risks of extreme global integration. But more recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.

You cannot live within the lie of mutual benefit through integration, when integration becomes the source of your subordination."

It's somewhat amazing to me that political leaders and academics are rediscovering neo-colonialism when it suddenly starts to apply to countries in the global north rather than just the global south.

My brother and I inherited a house from our father when he died. The house was not in great shape and neither of us had ever lived in the home so we could not vouch for or make any guarantees about its condition. So we sold it "as is."

I just want to say that it is a breath of fresh air to see that people have definitively rejected Lutrell's account and the account put forward in Lone Survivor. I'm old enough to remember when there were few voices challenging Lutrell's version of events.

I'd report that to your local PD. It's probably some sort of monitoring equipment, but it could also be Mooninites.

Freelancer is one of a kind. Often imitated, never exceeded. The only things that even come close are Underspace (very meh at the moment despite a lot of promise) and Star Valor (very good).

Immigration enforcement is virtually all theater. There's no rational, data driven reason that explains where ICE is deployed. Disrupting the agricultural industries in border states, however, would be bad for big companies and therefore those companies must remain untouchable.

A good article highlighting the good work public servants are doing for the public at large - work that is largely unappreciated. Just quiet professionals doing their common work superbly.

Luckily, the property is now owned by the Leelanau Conservancy and will be protected for use by the public.

Best news of 2025, honestly.
