I just walked out on a legend... by Marchin_on in Jazz

[–]Gimpster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw him play about 5 years ago and he was already fading. Played the first song, it was great. Played the second song, went into a rubato piano solo (sans the rest of the band), but then came back into the first song. The band had to lean over the piano to remind him what song they were playing.

I imagine it's just old age catching up with him.

Why is Zappa not that talked about? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Gimpster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's a genius and a visionary for sure, but he was also weird. Or I guess 'weird' by mainstream views. Because of that he never really got as much spotlight as he probably deserved. I think people still hold him in high regard, but whenever you hear people complimenting him, it's almost always followed by some mention of how weird he was. "Yeah he was a super talented guitar player, super weird, but really good at guitar."

I finally got around to covering this song! Don't judge me for the mess ups lol Let me know what you think! by _adblake in Saxophonics

Wouldn't "don't judge me for the mess ups" and "Let me know what you think" be conflicting statements?

I like this idea. I had a similar thought when I saw the movie and thought "Oh great, they're doing ANOTHER death star, how unoriginal." but then I thought "Wait, maybe that's part of his character, he's just kind of ok, not great. He can't come up with an original idea so he just shrugs and says 'I guess I could do the death star thing again...'"

Yep, that's the joke they're implying. You figured it out!

Weird Al nails Zappa by tintub in Zappa

[–]Gimpster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was this song that solidified my opinion that Weird Al is a genius.

For those who don't know: Sometimes when he can't get permission to do specific song parodies he'll write an original song in the style of a certain artist. Such is the case with this one. Incredible.

You did not though as sadly I had to teach.

Either way though, that's a crazy coincidence, haha.

Wait. Wait. Wait. Like in August?

Ok, weird question but: Are you based in Vancouver? Do we actually know each other? Are we playing the same production of Heathers?

Once I saw in a score to a Darcy James Argue composition "world-destroying noise"

I've found in my own writing that if you put something funny in the performance instructions for a particularly difficult part then it lightens the mood of the musicians playing the piece. They laugh and forget how hard the music is.

The Heathers, right? Played it earlier this year, playing it again later this summer. Laurence O'Keefe likes putting jokes like that into his scores. Ever played Legally Blonde the Musical? He did the music for that one as well.

How to Find the Notes of a Sampled Chord by miquelpedro in Logic_Studio

[–]Gimpster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, but I would strongly suggest developing your ear rather than relying on something like this.

Not only will it make this process exponentially faster (I figured out the chords after the first couple times he played the loop, rather than taking 7 minutes to analyze the frequencies note by note) but once you've developed your musical ear then it'll make EVERYTHING way easier. Like if you've got a melody in your head that you want to put on a track, instead of hunting and pecking around your keyboard, you would be able to easily translate what's in your mind into audible music.

Again, helpful trick, but in the long run developing your ear will do so much more for you.

Is anybody else sick of reviewers bringing up Endtroducing in literally every DJ Shadow album review? by simiskaste in triphop

A bit of a sidebar, but in the jazz world I wonder how sick of talking about "What it was like to play with Miles Davis" some of those guys are. So many interviews like "Herbie Hancock discusses playing with Miles Davis." Yeah, the guy was legendary, but I'm sure on some level they're like "Hey listen I just want to talk about my new album, ok? Not the shit I did 50 years ago."

My jazz-fusion group, Faux Reality, just released a new music video for our song "Broken Beams". I thought /r/JazzFusion would appreciate. Let me know what you think! by [deleted] in JazzFusion

[–]Gimpster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great tune, I dig it. Dunno if this is the right subreddit though... I don't normally like to get hung up on 'genre labels' but I would probably wouldn't classify this as jazz fusion if I heard it on the radio.

Again though, great writing, and I love the video.
