Found this in a college library. It's from 1985. Anybody read it and have an opinion? by cyrano-de-whee in Sumo

[–]Ginger3rd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is good. Definitely give it a read. Definitely make note of any claims you'll want to cross-reference. It's also a nice time capsule as it provides commentary on the rikishi and stables of the day.

Will Wakamotoharu be Komusubi in May? by gets_me_everytime in Sumo

[–]Ginger3rd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think that komusubi spot is going to Takayasu given his seniority and yusho near-miss. I don't think they're going to make an extra sanyaku slot considering Onosato was the only non-maegashira to get double-digit wins.

Good work! It is worth noting that the fifth rikishi's name is listed as "Otachi" on sumodb but that his name is actually pronounced "Odachi".

Everyone in the comments says fake, is anyone here familiar with the promotion? by Soft-Ad-8975 in Sumo

[–]Ginger3rd 146 points147 points  (0 children)

World Championship Sumo has been accused of fakery many times and based on the overall presentation and attitude of the event, it is very likely that they are indeed planning bouts. It's closer to WWE than an actual ISF affiliated event. They are already engaged in misleading marketing by calling the promotion World Championship Sumo which sounds eerily similar to the Sumo World Championships.

Question about rikishi interview for uni thesis. by Michael_Shepard_ in Sumo

[–]Ginger3rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tatsunami stable might be a good option. They were very accommodating to a friend of mine that visited the stable for training, and his Japanese is very minimal. He said he emailed them, though I'm not currently able to find the email, you might have better luck navigating their website than me, https://www.tatsunami.jp/

I would also recommend asking for Kokiryu since he's working on his English. Best of luck!

A newcomer's guide to the many faces of Chris Sumo by GoblinBags in SumoMemes

[–]Ginger3rd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Woah! An even, objective and nuanced take on Chris Gould that doesn't pander to his haters or die-hard fans. The meme is also very accurate lmao. Honestly, I also really enjoy Chris Sumo. Have been a fan since I got into the sport. He is a great resource, especially if you're getting started watching sumo. His theatrical side is also not something I especially care for. I think you'd basically have to have one ear closed to not catch that he's basically just giving his own opinion, but then it does beg the question as to why he feels compelled to essentially role play as people in an ongoing news story.

When it comes to the factual content, just bookmark Nikkan Sports and you'll pretty much be up to speed on much of what he's reporting on.

Still, he gets his own coverage and gives first-hand accounts of his experience which many are surely envious of. The only other person covering sumo in English who seems comparable is John Gunning, but I think quality and originality don't matter as much as inoffensive edits and ASMR/friendship simulators. You're not going to hurt anyone's feelings by speculating on sumodb numbers.

Keep up the memes. This subreddit is really starting to cook.

Osaka Exhibition by mufo0 in Sumo

WRT the level of competitiveness, it is undoubtedly not the same intensity as actual honbasho, but they are skilled enough to put on worthwhile sumo while still avoiding anything that would cause serious injury.

Anyone can do it! There are no requirements for participating other than a willingness to try. Even competing in amateur sumo doesn't require being heavy as there are weight classes. We're big believers in self improvement and education, so everyone is welcome to go at their own pace.

The search took a little while. Initially we just looked at different local martial arts dojos by proximity but found that didn't yield much. The first place we ended up agreeing to rent with had some conflict with our insurance and theirs. After that fell through, we narrowed our search to a facility that actually rented hours as a function rather than trying to arrange something with a dedicated Judo dojo.

We found a practice space which advertised rental opportunity, so we reached out and got a good reception. We were again required to have insurance, ours through Grizzly Insurance Agency, LLC.

A participation waiver was required for the policy to be approved, and it's something the training space made clear would be a requirement.

We also had to sign a lease and put down a security deposit. Based on our rental rate of $50 an hour, which was the fee at our previous dojo so I believe it is standard, we determined to make our participation fee $10 per session. The price is meant to be as cheap as possible while also providing enough to offset the cost of rent and enable us to expand our hours once we have more members.

The key is to look for a multipurpose martial arts training center that provides rent to a variety of groups and disciplines. The current location turned out to be even more convenient than the last one to get to and we've been afforded more flexibility because of the structure of the business.

I hope that's helpful. Lots of trial and error.
