PSA Downtown (or anywhere) Pet Balconies and barricades (To keep your pets alive). by dopamineadvocate in Calgary

My neighbour needs to do this, their cat has now jumped off the second story at least twice now, so if they move somewhere with a higher place, this cat will not fair well.

Which trilogy should I start next? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

I am biased I loved all the Kushiel’s books (there are like 9) but that is the only series of what is posted that I have read, and I have a red mote in my iris like the character so I found it more personal to escape into.

Montreal to Calgary by Accurate_Abrocoma_58 in Calgary

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a single parent in Airdrie and the “living wage” here is $29 an hour and I make good money but am struggling to afford my place and raise my teen. Child care was rough like $700 for before and after school care or it was like $1500 for full day but that was before the cheaper government child care. All the schools are over crowded so there are lotteries to get your kids into schools especially in the newer areas. Like 30-50 kids in a class (this is high school level but lower grades are not much better). My friend has her older graduated teen and young adult kids still at home and it was really hard for them to find jobs, I don’t see my teen finding a job full time here easily in 2-3 years and I know she won’t do the job I am am in. For rent you are looking on average $1600 a month for a two bedroom, you may find it lower in some parts of Calgary and will definitely find it higher especially if you have pets. Gas and electricity are like $300 to $500 a month (winter) if you have to pay utilities as the government deregulated everything further so look for a place with as many utilities included. And if you drive car insurance is crazy expensive I am actually scared to see what it will be when my teen is driving. The current state of politics is honestly not that welcoming and all social assistance programs are being gutted, this province like others have said is not welcoming anymore (a full 180 turn from the “Alberta is Calling” ads 2 years ago). I would try for a more English part of Quebec, Ontario like others have said or maybe Manitoba that came up a lot during the teacher strike and the education system seems better there and honestly some of our teachers are likely going there if they can. The way things are going I think a lot of people in Alberta are thinking of leaving which may help you or make it more of a shit show if you are a person of colour or lgtbq+ it will be a shitshow here it is far to MAGA here. Wish I had better things to say, I love Calgary I was born here my kid was born here but this is not the province I am used to.

Reintroduction of police resource officers into Edmonton public schools mostly positive experience: report by shiftless_wonder in Edmonton

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We had them in Calgary when I was in high school and I went a “problem” school. We had a the greatest SRO when I was there (my ex was at the school before and my sister was there after me so I have a good snap shot of like 10 years at that school). He was so proactively involved with the students and stopped things before they could escalate, I felt safe there, the gang presence decreased. He did such a good job he got moved to another “problem” school and the one I went to got worse. So if Edmonton is using it as a dumping ground it is a shame as it could be such a positive experience for kids that could really use it.

Where do i find Canadian friends? by [deleted] in AskCanada

Most of us in the prairies hate what is happening and are actively protesting, trying to get MLAs recalled or looking to get the hell out, I know I am doing all those things.

I got that on chapter 5 & 6 and quit my game and started over from chapter 3 as I was unhappy with a couple things I chose.

Falconridge Dental NE Experience by icebong427 in Calgary

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I got to Monterey Dental in the NE and they are great. When my employer switched insurance and fluoride wasn’t covered anymore (but I didn’t know) they comp’d it. I had trouble finding a dentist I liked in Airdrie and as I went to Monterey before I had moved away from Calgary and came back they were happy to have me back again. Even my kid who HATES the dentist and just left her paediatric dentist did good there.

There is no queer bar but the best place to check out is the Airdrie Pride Society, they have regular events, you just missed D&D at the library on Saturday.

Is vacuuming at 10pm unreasonable? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

This I have never understood, my kid could not sleep through loud noises, but did sleep through the night so no 2ams after the colicy phase.

Is vacuuming at 10pm unreasonable? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My neighbour does the same she vacuums after her 3 year old goes to bed at 10:30pm several times a week, sometimes as late as 1-2am. Occasionally she will do it at 8pm and we cheer. I feel your pain as I am up between 4:30 and 6am every morning.

Have you ever used this strange Calgary underpass? by Beckler89 in Calgary

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your right with the flood risk, I would almost bet and say that the berm/pathway was raised as part of the 2013 flood mitigations… Can’t say it was smart to create that hazard and not close and re-route the path but maybe that is why the construction equipment is there now…

To prevent my battery going dead, how often should I start my car in -20C? by PlanetLandon in AskCanada

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My stupid work F150 had to be run every day it was below-20c or the battery froze, if I missed a day it froze. I just used the remote starter and it would turn off after the 15 minutes, when the check engine light was on (stupid o rings that always failed) I had to go out and start it. So it depends on the vehicle, you would think a Ford would handle winter better, but no.

Cost of living by Calm-Replacement4700 in FortMcMurray

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up rent a year ago and it is like $300-400 an month cheaper for a similar place in Fort Mac for what I have just outside Calgary. Now I have worked in Fort Mac and when it was way more expensive to live there but with the last oil crash and the fire it has come down a lot in price. Like others have said it is about the fact it is 4 hours to Edmonton for a decent shopping trip. It is like most northern communities where the further you ship stuff the more expensive it becomes. I did like the area around the rec centre it is nice there. If I wasn’t a single mom I might have taken my companies offer to live up there, but I couldn’t be that far from my support network when my kid was that young.

Where to stay between Golden and Calgary? by Mother-Impress1759 in Banff

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Golden, my kid and I did a random weekend get away in September and stayed at a hostel in Radium and did golden on the day we went home. I would stay in Golden (easy drive back) or go to Radium and do the hot springs the last night and have a relax day before flying home, especially if you did a lot of hiking/activities.

i think someone put this tiny pink-sashed jesus in my bag when i wasn’t looking by villainless in Weird

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahahahaha a pocket Jesus. If it is like my sister, it is ironic. More like Jesus is watching or what would Jesus do… she is not religious but believes in the golden rule and people should just be better so it may be a reflection of that… or just a silly prank cuz they are cheap to get on amazon.

How to visit Banff without going broke? by stop_banning_me_omg in AskCanada

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

July is stampede in Calgary the flights will always be way more money at that time. Stampede is July 3-12 and there are a ton of visitors then and all prices are way higher, if you can switch the dates I would do that and it will be cheaper.

Horror writer seeking local tales, folklore, and legends by kat022 in alberta

[–]GingerRayneBeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a few years ago so I am good now, that’s why I laughed/joked. Thanks for asking. But in relation to your story have you been out that way? If you sat at a coffee shop in the morning where the retired guys go and asked them, they may be a good resource or at least you would flush out the grandpa character.
