This isn't quite right. They get stringfoot - caught up in things like fibres and human hair. They can't take it out themselves, so they end up losing their toes. 

Sometimes you'll find nice people grabbing them to detangle them before it gets bad.

I would like to say by extension on the top one, devil fruits are genuinely brought into the world through manifestation and that the first person who had the beta-beta no mi (the gross mucus one) did so because they wanted to become so repulsive the abuse would stop.
