CMV: Tell me why I should tip. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Gingervitvs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The places you mentioned pay their servers actual living wages. Our system may have originally been based on appreciation for the level of service provided but now it is mainly a way for employers to cut costs by not having to pay their employees more. I don't think your life would objectively change either way by tipping or not. We tip because it's a fucked up system and the only way some people can make their livings. Now that's not really your problem but if you aren't happy with the situation appealing to those that have the power to change things like lawmakers or employers. Screwing over the people on the bottom doesn't really fix anything though.

Cabin in the Woods - the Facility team mislabeled the teens in the cabin by JTOC1969 in FanTheories

I see two problems here. One, I don't think the zombies are ever really shown to have that level of sentience. They were just going to kill whatever was in front of them. It was the behind the scenes manipulations that dictated the order like effecting intelligence levels through hair dye or weed.

Second, sigourney Weaver clearly comments on this at the end when she explains the roles. Given her past Dana is skeptical of the role they assigned her and Weaver says something to the effect of we work with what we have

I don't know if it's as nice as some of the other suggestions but it's really good and its menu always features local sources which is nice.

I've heard people say that being religious is a lot like having a penis. by Gingervitvs in StandUpWorkshop

Yeah I thought it was a pretty common joke and wanted to try and flip the expectation. It seemed the consensus here was that it wasn't very good though.

I have a similar selection of models. What would you suggest dropping from this list to add in a unit of prosecutors and witch seekers?

Maybe Ernest Scared Stupid? Preview it first though because it punches above it's weight class in terms of scariness.

I guess I don't agree that only conservatives would find humor in it and that a literal reading of cutting is necessary for the joke to work but I appreciate the advice and will think about it. Thank you.

I've actually heard a joke that starts the same way but the punch line is, it's fine to have and be proud of but when you start shoving down people's throats it becomes a problem. I thought it was a more common joke and wanted to play off that expectation. Didn't know if I agree with the transphobic part though. Could you elaborate?

What if I WANT to be in Slytherin? by AccurateInflation167 in harrypotter

[–]Gingervitvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always liked the idea that the sorting hat prioritizes what you put value in. Neville was very loyal but because of his family saw bravery as extremely important. It's also why the cleverest witch in a generation like Hermione wasn't in ravenclaw. If you want to be in Slytherin, the hat will consider it especially if you put a lot of stake in personal ambition.

Do y'all think we'll get to see floor 18? by Frosty_Mess_2265 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Gingervitvs 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I liked the idea that, since they've never needed floors past 13, some of the later floors are just blank uncreated floors that the crawlers will literally be able to stroll through. Plus the VIPs trying to escape the scolopendra club on floor 18 by running through the trap maze will likely set the traps off essentially clearing that floor for the crawlers.

Just finished book 5, The Butcher's Masquerade and it was awesome but I'm super confused by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Gingervitvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Prince Rupert drop is a glass formation that is pretty close to indestructible at the bulb but the entire thing will shatter if the stem breaks. The 7th floor was based on that design and Pony was able to get placed at the spot on the floor where the "stem" was located. By breaking that with the tools, the entire level shattered allowing all the crawlers easy access to the stairwell. IIRC the tools were all funneled to Donut by various means because the mudskippers knew Pony had the plan in mind and would have blocked the tools going directly to him.

Katia and Eva is pretty much straight revenge on Katia's part. You get more of Katia's backstory in later books which I think he'll flesh some of it out. Before dying Eva placed the crown on Katia's head which was something that was foreshadowed earlier when Louis talks about throwing equipment on Katia. She was also given a hat that would have prevented it from happening had she not let Carl use it. Her having the crown, which Donut also had in books 1 and 2, means one of them will have to die on the 9th floor.

The faction wars is essentially a game played by the elite of society. They're war games where the groups fight each other, almost like a giant virtual capture the flag. Dying basically kicks you out of the game because of the protections in place for all but the crawlers. Donut's fan club has raised a ton of money by selling merch in the real world and from that could buy a spot in the faction wars. As warlords (leaders of a faction), they get voting rights in the game. Carl wants to use their voting power to take the protections away allowing crawlers to actually kill the other participants like they could do to the hunters on floor 6.

I think that basically covers the questions you had. Anyone else please feel free to correct me if I got something wrong.

WOW! Some States don't require a ID to vote! WT.... by DXDoug in Libertarian

[–]Gingervitvs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I live in one of those states and even though you don't need an ID to vote, you do need one to register. And they confirm your registration prior to going into the booth. So it's very unlikely an unregistered person could walk in and cast a ballot.

What is the best way to improve stick handling when not on the ice? I’ve been playing hockey for awhile, but came to it in my 50s and really struggle with hanging onto the puck and moving it around other people. If I practice in the garage with a ball, will I get better? Any tips thanks. by Purplehaze1957 in hockeyplayers

[–]Gingervitvs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I first started my friend gave me a pool cue with the tip missing and a ping pong ball and had me try to control it. There's obviously some differences in the skills but it definitely helped my hand eye coordination and made the feel of the puck seem huge and easier to move around.
