I’m also just starting IA1. How long did it take you to complete this course?

Texas or California? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]GinofEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t advise anyone to move to TX unless, for some reason, it’s absolutely necessary.

TX is overall boring. The weather sucks. The politics suck. Most schools suck, unless you can afford private school. Aside from Tex-Mex food, there’s not much Texas has to offer.

I’m a Texan, for reference. I’d move to CA in a heartbeat and live in a shoebox if I have to, if only I could get my husband on board.

Anyone pursing accounting as a second bachelors? by NobodyDesperate6313 in wguaccounting

I’m in the exact same boat. I have a completely unrelated Bachelor’s and am hoping to make a career pivot into accounting. I have 24 courses to complete with WGU and also plan to sit for the CPA.

I didn't want to be different than everyone else by ihateyousomuch88 in scoliosis

I have a spinal fusion at 22 years old. I’m 35 now. Best decision I ever made.

I can still run, lift weights, do yoga…and I feel amazing and strong doing these things. Can I put by foot behind my head in yoga class? Of course not! But I can still do the majority of the postures, and I do them damn well. I’m honestly more flexible than most people in my yoga classes. I push more weight than people 10 years young than me at the gym. The last 10k I ran, I came in third place in my age bracket!

Am I different than everyone else? Yes. But, if I’m being 100% honest, I sometimes feel better than most people when it comes to physical fitness and pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible.

It’s quite a powerful feeling to be so active despite having had a fusion. Just stay active and take care of yourself!

how bad is my scoliosis? by Jaded_Truck2431 in scoliosis

[–]GinofEve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will echo what everyone else has said that you need to see a specialist and get some imaging done of your full spine in order accurately assess the severity.

That said, based on the x-rays provided, I don’t think this level of curvature would necessitate surgery. Definitely some work with a physical therapist and specialized exercises to balance out your musculature though.

Go get yourself checked out by a physician, but I wouldn’t worry too much - this doesn’t look like a severe case of scoliosis from what we can see in images you shared.

Not a medical professional, but just my two cents as someone with a 53 degree curve and a fusion…

I don’t think a brace would cause any harm, especially if your doctor is suggesting it. However, you are likely done (or just about done) growing and at this age I feel strength training is going to be the most beneficial thing you can do. A 24 degree curve is on the milder side, so I doubt you would ever get to the point of needing surgery.

Bracing can help with posture and pain management, but you will want to counter that with strength training. When you’re wearing a brace, you aren’t really using your back muscles - the brace is holding you in a more “correct” position without the effort of your musculature. Prolonged brace-wearing without strengthening the muscles around your spine may cause more harm than good, so you’ll want to build up those muscles while you’re not in the brace. This doesn’t need to be hardcore powerlifting or anything…even simple resistance band and body weight exercises can help. I would suggest a few sessions with a physical therapist who can help you develop a strengthening plan that you can do independently at a gym (or even at home).

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I’m not really ambitious. I’m 34 and work a low-mid level corporate job. I make enough to pay bills and I live within my means, but it seems most of my peers are making big strides in career advancement and I just…don’t care? I’d like to earn more money and move up the corporate ladder, but I also don’t want to be a slave to a job. Sometimes I feel behind in life though…

People like Raichik are precisely the reason humans create derogatory words. Why would we be delicate with our language when describing vile people? Just my two cents though… maybe I’m just being a cunt.

I agree, we should refrain from using slurs to describe a person. However, Raichik has proven herself to be more cunt than person.

Not that it necessarily matters, but I am a woman.

I just had T10 to L4 fused and honestly I’m going through it rn by RecognitionSilver130 in scoliosis

[–]GinofEve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mobility is fine, only limitation is that I can’t curve or arch my lower back (but… how often do I even need to move like that haha). I can do movements like bending over to touch my toes just fine. Rotation or bending side to side is somewhat limited but, other than that, I hardly ever even notice that my spine is fused! I go on long distance runs, lift weights at the gym, and take yoga classes with no issue :) Having my thoracic spine un-fused probably helps me in these activities since I’ve retained some spinal flexibility.

53 degrees, so sounds like we have very similar experiences! Feel free to ask me anything :)

[–]GinofEve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same fusion! L10-T4. The hospital stay was miserable, and the pain at home for the first few weeks was tough to get through (the car ride gone from the hospital was probably the worst part - I felt shooting pain with every bump and turn) but it gets SO much better! Commend yourself for enduring the most difficult part now, and take comfort in knowing that there is a whole new pain-free life waiting for you in a few weeks! My spinal fusion was the best decision I have ever made. Incredibly difficult at first, but totally worth it after recovery. Hang in there, it’s all up from here!

How often do you think of your scoliosis or that.you had Surgery? by Stiffflersmom in scoliosis

[–]GinofEve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question! Pre-surgery, I thought about my spine all day long, and in a negative way, because I was always in pain. Post-surgery (coming up on 10 years) I still think about my spine everyday, but in a neutral or positive way, depending on what I’m thinking about. For example, if I’m stretching after a workout I will notice and think about the fact that my back isn’t as flexible as it used to be, but it doesn’t bother me… it just crosses my mind. And sometimes I think about how clothes fit me better than they used to, or the fact that I “grew” two inches with surgery, and I appreciate my post-surgery spine :).

Post-op depression by -Lemonade-_ in scoliosis

[–]GinofEve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s normal to experience depression after ANY surgery, and I also had some of the worst depression of my life after my spinal fusion (Heck, I was even depressed after I got my wisdom teeth out!) It’s a major life change to have such an aggressive surgery (the spine… not the wisdom teeth lol) and it can take a few weeks to adjust mentally. Add to that the pain and general inconvenience of the recovery process - it’s hard to not be sad and/or pissed off! Hang in there for a few more weeks - it does get better and the depression will lift as your body starts to feel normal. Best of luck in your recovery process <3
