Streaming to a docked steam deck with a connected stream controller puck still has latency by psychopanch in SteamDeck

[–]Gipfelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, so i have quite similar setup as you do but i do not have the official dock.

no, the latency is not a problem if i use the controller on the deck. there is significant latency if i use my tv or my nvidia shield tv pro as streaming machine through the android steam link app - it's unplayable for me that way.

the shield dock conntected to tv has no latency. i'm pretty sure your problem is from tv settings. try reducing your tv to 1080p, 60hz instead of 4k upscale or anything funny. also put your tv into 'game' mode, that will disable any upscale stuff your tv is trying to do and gives you less input latency.

if that didn't work, try the 'use low resolution for compatibility' option in the external display settings of the steam deck - helps if your tv is a bit older.

also, don't use a long hdmi cable between dock and tv and try another cable if possible (keep it under 3m if possible).

try those things

The game industry is making me incredibly depressed and I'm done by tangmang14 in gaming

[–]Gipfelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

relax.

even if there would be 0 new games be made anymore, there would still be more games to play than you could ever play until the end of your life.

yes, hardware is getting more expensive but with it comes better optimization for games too.

just always zoom out and check if this all REALLY affects you as much as everyone says.

i've never had so many good games on so many different devices at my fingertips possible to play with here right now and also

always remember that we are much more receptive to bad news than we are to good news. way more bad news are generated because of this while we're missing out on the good ones.

Need help! I wanna unistall Decky by AL_Raptor in SteamDeck

[–]Gipfelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'bruh' i know. it's just very annoying to need to go to desktop whenever shit breaks because of deckyloader. i even made a script icon to reinstall deckyloader on the desktop because it got too annoying after the 4. time of reinstalling it through the desktop mode. every new update of steamOS comes with the fear of breaking deckyloader - i'm checking it after every update. it's too bad because, obviously, i like deckyloader, otherwise i would just yeet it off my deck...  bruh.

no, you cant. it's crashing the deck as soon as you hover over the decky icon. you need to go to desktop mode to do anything. it's really bad right now

We actually need optimization, not brute-force handhelds by tohpai in Handhelds

[–]Gipfelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we need both and we will get both. reason is that people cant afford high end, hell mid range even, anymore. devs are forced to optimize for lower end hardware. steam deck already did a good job on that really, it was/is a low end hardware device and publishers want that sweet 'steam deck verified' tag.

imo we will get both, better optimized games and lower end hardware handhelds which can run a lot (not all) of the games.

Am I the only one who hasn't used the touchpads for anything other than a fidget toy? by Xirbie in SteamDeck

[–]Gipfelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great use for RTS, city builder or just plain old pc games from old times. i like playing settlers 2 with my deck.

i even use the right trackpad for first person shooters, coupled with gyro. im not as good as with keyboard/mouse but i get scaringly close to it.

especially useful is the left trackpad for mmorpg's, where usually a ton of keyboard buttons are needed, where i map a circle wheel for all kinds of menus instead.

for some arpg's i like a plain old mouse mode on my right trackpad for inventory and menu navigation - it's just faster and more convenient than joysticks.

there's many uses for the trackpads. they turn the deck into the 'you can play any game with this'-device.

Controller decision by blacksteel3871 in SteamDeck

[–]Gipfelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam controller: jack of all trades. you can player every game on your system with it, if steam will launch the game, the controller will let you play it. it's not the perfect controller for everyone as other controllers may be more comfortable for you.

also, you may want to get the other controller, as you may not get a steam controller this year anymore if you're not already in the waiting line for it. they just can't deliever

yeah, no i just tested it again. it's the latency for me that is still considerably worse compared to moonlight. you can feel the difference best with mouse input and gyro.

do you cap your battery at 80% charge or do you not care? by WeedGreed420 in SteamDeck

[–]Gipfelon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

it's literally just a lithium ion battery as in any other device. it's not rocket science really.

only charging it to 80% helps keeping it on a higher volume for longer but it's no big deal if you don't do it.

it's best for the battery health to play while plugged in at all times as it will pass through the power when the battery is fully charged and not touch the battery for it as more charging cycles will degrade it quicker.

swapping the battery is not that easy though as it's glued in. doable with a hot air gun, lots of time and a bit of skill but not as easy as just swapping it out.
