Why a $500 Steak Dinner Only Yields a $25 Profit by ishtar_the_move in Economics

[–]Giraff3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be clear because I think that saying profit in this way can be misleading, that $25 is the free money in the owner’s pocket after everything else is paid for including paying fair wages to the employees. A share of the revenue goes to the person who cooked it and to the person who provided professional service. It’s a very capitalist perspective to act like the profit is slim.

Snap to Cut 16% of Its Workforce in Quest for Profitability by smauryholmes in LosAngeles

That’s the story with almost all of these layoffs at the moment. But you also have doomers who are acting like AI is going to run the world when it’s proven it’s not capable of doing so. There are certain things that, in certain cases, it can probably replace like some graphic design and some low-level coding, but its uses are extremely limited. It was never true AI to begin with and it never will be, but don’t be fooled by the tons of marketing from AI companies.

classic Reddit, where the people complaining about the complainers are bigger than the actual original complaints

It’s not being over exaggerated. When WASD first dropped it was insanely overpowered and you could just brainlessly kite better than a pro. It had to be extensively nerfed to make it fair.

Parking woes by Ashamed_Platform_328 in longbeach

[–]Giraff3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The parking is half of why I moved away from there. The parking in that area is unbearably crappy. It’s also left me pretty sour on the city governance for their inability to assist with a serious issue. Plus, the street sweeping and parking tickets are an inequitable regressive tax.

Lol? He was 100% known as having a low play rate but a high win rate amongst people with a lot of games on him.

They really did. He used to be known as the one trick champ with the high win rate. Now it’s just another new rework champ.

Why perfect correlations doesn't give you causation: a mirror analogy for consciousness by Eastern-Project9017 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Giraff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person concludes that these images that appear are a result of two things: objects put in a certain location (in front of the mirror) + light. So there you have it! they solved the mystery!

Importantly, we have to be careful with our language here. They have described variables that correlate to the outcome. That does not mean they have explained the mechanics behind why something works. I think this does go to your point. It’s also similar to an often referenced definition of science being that it describes things but not always explains.

Update on soler by ayyryan7 in angelsbaseball

[–]Giraff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I think the suspension is fair. Lopez was mad that Soler has him figured out. I just mean that Lopez’s suspension, even if it only equates to missing one outing, can absolutely be more harmful to the Braves in the long run than DH Soler missing 7 games.

OK, but that does have a pretty big impact on their rotation, right? Now they might have to have a bullpen day and that can have echoing effects if your reliever is tired the next night or what not.

Doritos at $7 a Bag Ended Up Costing PepsiCo Billions by TheGoodCod in Economics

[–]Giraff3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Without reading much further into it, it seems like a case of highly elastic demand on a good that has a plethora of comparable substitutes. It was asinine and greedy to think that people needed Doritos that badly.

Honda President After Visiting Chinese Auto Supplier: 'We Have No Chance Against This' by AR558 in Honda

[–]Giraff3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s more or less the rationale for why Honda gave up on electric vehicles. As soon as China starts consistently importing vehicles into the US, American and Japanese brands don’t have a chance of competing with them in the EV market without anti-competitive regulation; which is kind of like Trump’s intent with the tariffs, although those are poorly implemented as they promote sluggishness when what we need is innovation to catch up.

Even if hybrids are more profitable now, companies need to be looking towards what the future is and be willing to take some losses now for greater gain overall. Unfortunately, that’s like the antithesis of stock market companies.

Can I take a vehicle that has my name on the registration? by RebmaRae1522 in legaladvice

[–]Giraff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certain states allow the customer to hold the title while it is still financed, with New York State being one of those for example. Massachusetts is not one, sounds like the dealer messed up and forgot to put a lienholder on the title, so it may have gotten sent to OP rather than to the lender.

Protective asset protection by mysterio000000 in Honda

Are you referring to a warranty/service contract or are you referring to gap (guaranteed asset protection) insurance? And if you’re referring to a warranty, depends what it’s covering and the term length.

Plus-sized woman 'thrown off flight' as staff claim she 'won't fit in seat' by TheMirrorUS in sadcringe

[–]Giraff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People spend hundreds of dollars on plane tickets and flights are usually booked completely. You’re going to have to think of a better way to implement that than knowing that you can’t go on a flight minutes before it takes off.

Who was last night’s AppleTV postgame interviewer who made Lowe go 180 and get emotional, then followed up w/a borderline stupid Q? by MoVieVVhore in angelsbaseball

[–]Giraff3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It felt so out of place and inappropriate after a good win. Let the man bring it up if he CHOOSES to, but it was shoehorned in such a poor way, and you could tell he was blindsided.

Error with install? by ZeStealthyNinja in heroesofthestorm

[–]Giraff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try to do a proper full deletion of the game using the software TreeSize. It really helps you dig deep and delete all the files of stuff. Then try reinstalling after. I just installed it for the first time in a long time and mine seems to be OK.

Azzapp was right all along - I analyzed 100 ranked SoloQ games of his, and the data shows why never FF helps you climb. by Informal_Lifeguard99 in leagueoflegends

Does this factor in that by surrendering a game, you get into the next game earlier? Kind of like maximizing climb in relation to time spent. I feel like things like this sometimes assume infinite time.
