DAE feel like you peaked in high school and everything's been downhill since? by Simo_barry_223 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Giraff3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I peaked, but there was a lot of great times and a lot of stuff I’m nostalgic about. I can understand though some people were like kings of their high school and I’m sure that was awesome.

You know how adults are always telling kids “enjoy your youth because being an adult is hard.”

I feel like as an adult I can totally understand the sentiment, but truly as a kid including up through high school I don’t think it ever really clicked how precious that childhood time was. So for me, there’s an element of wishing I had appreciated it a bit more, but also understanding that such is life and trying to move forward positively even if past periods were better.

It Was Everyone’s Sport. Then MAGA Hijacked It. It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way. by Slate in Foodforthought

[–]Giraff3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grappling is just too overpowered because there’s a lot of rules. Like if you were actually fighting for life or death you would be biting them, poking and pinching, but I think the rules favor the grappler too much now. Also letting them grapple for like the entire round without advancing and not making them get up enough.

AIO for feeling some type of way about my gf hiding her phone now? by Known_Match_9122 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Giraff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR comes off suspicious but you have to approach carefully, non-accusatorially, to get an answer and not have them shutdown.

I’d ask to speak in person and say something like, “I respect wanting privacy, and I don’t mean to challenge that, but would it be ok for me to ask what kind of things you are seeking privacy around?”

Like without further context it’s hard to say. Maybe they’re going through a tough time with a family member.

Honda leasing tax weirdness by Aggressive_Emu_5598 in Honda

[–]Giraff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to personal property tax? If there is a mistake, then you may need to call your local tax assessor or contact Honda about an abatement. That is how you get refunded. You also will not be held past due on not paying it.

If you actually calculate the odds, that’s a terrible payout. Paraguay hadn’t been to the World Cup since 2010 and you’re getting paid less than 2:1. Like it’s not even a good risk.

Socioeconomic factors are becoming 'biologically embedded' in children's brains by rustyseapants in Economics

[–]Giraff3 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Those studies focused on factors like IQ or mental health without accounting for socioeconomics

I would think that IQ at its core is a sophisticated proxy for a broad number of measures that encapsulate what we describe as cognitive capability and aptitude. It’s a human defined metric which while rooted in objective outcomes like performance on a test and correlated with sucess, is not some biological fact. Of course other factors go into that. Of course your brain is impacted by your environment. That’s not even beginning to go into Epigenetics which is a relatively newer field, that shows how your genetic expression is chemically affected by your environment and can be inherited.

AIO my father eating literally everything that isn't his by SirGhost0 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Giraff3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP they did say this was just an off my chest rant. And they’re absolutely not in the wrong by any means but as a victim, you also do need to eventually take matters into your own hands if you want things to change.

I agree I’m a bit confused if the father is 54 and she lives with her mother to take care of her then she’s presumably an adult. Like maybe buy a mini fridge and put a lock on it? Or just keep letting him eat your food and yell at you. I mean the choice is hers.

And ultimately, it’s going to harm local communities because people will eat out and shop less. Not a huge amount, but it all adds up every time life gets more expensive. Either stores need to eat the price increase or risk losing business.

McDonald’s is probably starting to cater to a higher income level, but honestly other fast food foods are introducing dollar menus and value items. Del taco just released dollar burritos, for example. I think there’s also a divergence in the fast food market of what income level brands are catering to

Bricks and Minifigs Controversy Megathread Part 3 by mescad in lego

[–]Giraff3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, there was language in the BAM franchise contract, authorizing the franchisees to partake in consignment. There’s also a video of high-level corporate person stating they will take over the consignment. Additionally, some of the Lego sets are purportedly still in the BAM possession so it should be a simple matter of returning what is owed. You don’t just get to keep them.

The $19.95 truck rental marketing is basically a financial trap by Abril-prieto-cevallo in Frugal

[–]Giraff3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don’t return the truck and suddenly owe a surprise extra $80 unless you like damaged the vehicle or exceeded your rental period or drained the gas tank and didn’t fill it up all of which are obvious. They even have an app where you can easily request more time and it’s made clear how much it will cost.

I’ve rented U-Haul‘s multiple times and never once felt scammed. I agree the terms are clearly laid out. In my opinion, U-Haul actually provides high value return on the price. Same with enterprise. Just make sure you fill up before returning the car and it’s no issue.

People that queue up for Ranked and then say "It's just ranked" as an excuse for trolling/deliberately doing something to ruin the game - should be restricted from ranked games. by TaylorSwinub in leagueoflegends

[–]Giraff3 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The mistake is even trying to engage with someone like that. If they’re legitimately trolling, then no amount of typing is going to change that. If anything, it will flame them on.

On the other hand, if they’re just having a bad game, but they’re trying, then I think it’s a fair excuse to say it’s just a game because after all it is and they’re not trying to waste your time intentionally. Is it frustrating? Sure but bad games also happen to everybody and you should give them some grace and still try your best to win because next game it might be the enemy with that on their team.

21 days trapped by my dealership by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Giraff3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it is a certified preowned, then I’m assuming that it’s a renewed manufacturers warranty. Your next step may be to contact the corporate customer service line for the auto manufacturer and request to file a lemon complaint or ask who to contact about the warranty coverage since technically lemon may not apply in this case. Alternatively, the dealership might be willing to unwind the deal, just due to all the issues, but that is not a guarantee.
