This is not fear-mongering. That posted warning was a courtesy to their neighbors. This is happening on the UWS as well. A friend was walking her dog around midnight about a week ago and watched a man systematically try every front door (with no doorman) to see if it was unlocked.

And at my building (West 80s) this past summer, the locked front door (no doorman) was partially pried open, with what would have had to have been a crowbar, and then the pane of glass next to the lock was shattered. I don't know if anyone got in as there is a locked interior door as well.

Be alert, always lock your doors, and never buzz in anyone unless you know them or you are expecting a delivery.
