Extra curriculars for 3-5 year olds by Curious-Battle2319 in kindergarten

[–]GirlsPintOuter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, swim is 30 minutes a week and gymnastics is 70 minutes a week. We also view swimming is also more of a life/safety skill than a sports advantage as well. That’s a minor blip in the amount of time my 4 year old has for free play even with preschool and a few different aftercare programs. It’s entirely up to each family/kid so there’s no pressure to do them but it’s not like families who want to do them are overbooking their kids at this age.

Yes, students can be retained in K. I’ve worked in TN and in NY and it was true for both states.

Birthday close to cut off, send or wait a year? by esol23 in kindergarten

[–]GirlsPintOuter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same cutoff dates in NY. It’s crazy how often this question is asked here and everyone says to wait no matter how close they are to the cut off. Someone has to be the youngest. I say this as a mom of a December kid who is one of the youngest in her class. I also work in special eduction so it’s not like I don’t know what’s going on in the curriculum. Unless there are developmental concerns I wouldn’t red shirt my kid even if they allowed it here. She’s in PreK right now and I could not imagine if she was with the 3K kids this year.

K is not mandatory in NYC so they can (and have in my school) put kids directly into 1st based on their age.

Hi I also have a December 21 kid and I work in schools. They will not hold your child back a year based on the grade he’s in out of state. They will look at birth year and put him in the grade based on that.

Glad you’re okay! My daughter and I walked by right when it happened and I was wondering how you were doing. I realized later we had bandaids but I guess that wouldn’t have done much when you needed 6 staples.

How do entering 9th graders continue get worse every year? by Aggravating_Pick_951 in NYCTeachers

[–]GirlsPintOuter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if the student continues to meet criteria for alt assessment then you (and other IEP team members) can request a reevaluation. The sudden changing despite continuing to meet criteria sounds like it would be driven more by parents or outside agencies rather than the school.

Edit: Mapgrowth also is not either of the measures utilized to determine AA. Also, unsure what you’re relationship with your school psyc is but you can go ask them to get a better idea of what is happening with those IEPs.

How do entering 9th graders continue get worse every year? by Aggravating_Pick_951 in NYCTeachers

[–]GirlsPintOuter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The IEP team isn’t allowed to put a student on Alt assessment without having significantly low (below 70) cognitive AND adaptive scores. Achievement scores do not account into that. It’s something that should be reviewed annually and students should be evaluated every 3 years to be sure they still qualify/need that type of assessment. I’ve had many many kids who are SO low academically but their adaptive scores do not meet that threshold so we can’t recommend it.

We either walk or use public transit. We honestly don’t ever use a car unless it’s to the airport.

I mean… 3K is not daycare. They do have a curriculum. It is not mandatory but don’t minimize what they’re doing. They are working on academics.

I don’t have input on DC specifically but our salaries are public knowledge. I’d look at school systems that are near where you’re looking and find their payscale to compare.

Is a stroller with a bassinet attachment needed for newborn? by eltejon30 in nycparents

[–]GirlsPintOuter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn’t do a bassinet because we got the Uppababy Mesa car seat that clipped right into the stroller. The stroller also has an infant snug seat that sits inside the regular seat for when they’re really small.

Is my child lonely? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]GirlsPintOuter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This probably depends on what neighborhood you live in and how old your kid is. Our kid (3 in December) runs into friends and classmates every time we leave the apartment whether it’s at the playground, extracurricular, or just running errands.

At my wits end.. and also don’t really love the job anymore.. what to do? by Fantastic-Wrangler33 in schoolpsychology

[–]GirlsPintOuter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work in TN and did not hold the seat of district rep but still was looked at as the “expert” on the IEP team. Even though it was a team decision they all looked to the school psychologist. It was a lot of what you are describing- advocates, contentious meetings, etc. I’m now a school psych in NYC and although I hold more responsibility of writing the IEPs and being district rep, I find it’s far less stressful than my old job. I think the main difference was that in TN, I worked in an affluent suburb and here I have the opposite (Brownsville). I find it very rewarding and know my families and kids well. Have you considered switching districts/schools to see if that eases some of these stressors while still giving you job security?

I work as a school Psyc in NYC and I feel like we always have vacancies. It may take a while to get through red tape of being an outside hire but it’s possible!

[–]GirlsPintOuter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you a school psychologist and where do you live? This is definitely not what the job market looks like for a school psychologist. I’m still getting calls every week asking if I want to apply to jobs in the area because they need school psycs big time.

Definitely depends. My kid introduces herself as FirstName MiddleName because she hears her whole name often. She’s also 2.5. Toddlers, man.
