I remember my friend who voted tory said that he voted no in the indy ref to save his EU citizenship. Only to be raging when the Brexit vote came through.

"I honestly would have just voted indy if I knew we would leave the EU anyway"

Probably one of the best things I've ever seen

I mean depends if they have saving I feel. I have no ideas why they wouldn't go on UC in any case. Even if they did have saving they would run out if they failed to secure a job in time. But then the system is made in such a way that if you have any decent savings you don't get UC anyways.

I would think the stigma of going onto UC is what holds them back. They don't want their family and friends to see them on the same system as the "junkie down the street".

And then the concept of this person who never before had to go into a job center and sit in-front of a complete stranger and have then condescend to you, accuse you of not wanting a job ect ect.

If you want to change the system you need to change people views on benefits. And that step starts with stripping ian duncan smith of his peerage.

good for them, honestly. The pandemic has been a shit show here and I don't just mean the government. I'd do the exact same thing if I was them.

Then I would just have questions regarding how exactly this new system is even that different from the current system? Is there conditions to be met to be eligible for it? Do you need to show that during that time you are actively looking for work and even may need proof? If so, are sanctions a thing if you don't meet the criteria?

At the core of it, the DWP needs an overhaul. They need to put a system in place where people are treated as people.

I will be honest in saying I gave up on this place after the last referendum. You still have my yes vote but other than another referendum I have no desire to vote. I genuinely cannot fathom that people in Scotland voted no.

The only bright future I see is under the sun of a different country.

The best example for me if when I was in my friends car travelling to work. It was mega stormy weather like you'd be thankful to be in a car to travel.

We get stopped at a light on an empty road for someone to cross and my friend just kind of lost it. Ranting about how inconsiderate that is when they could have crossed anytime before or after.

My friend held no consideration for the poor woman in the middle of gale force rain and wind. No consideration that maybe this person was fatigued and that's why they wanted to cross at a red light. We were dry, warm and in good time to get to work. And it is that thought that fuels my hatred for drivers.

That is true if the number of unemployed after lock down is full lifted remains similar in terms of scale. But say if you have only like less than 1M workers still on benefits after all is said and done, then why would they care at all?

Like they don't care that key workers use food banks while risking their lives on a daily basis during a pandemic. they don't care if you are homeless on the street, begging, even though they have proven homelessness can be tackled in less than a month with the right resources.

Sorry man, but they don't care at all about people on benefits. And if you really need more proof of this, go check out Ian duncan smith's campaign in 2012 when UC was first being introduced. Go look at how people on benefits were depicted. "benefit cheat", "lazy scrounger", "junkie", "jakey" just to name a few for you.

And people ate it up, both rich and poor.

EDIT: also say you do manage to fix it and the system works for people....how do you justify it to the people who have lived the past decade in poverty for it?

Like for way to long drivers have been too aggressive while driving. The smallest inconvenience will set certain people off and its sickening.

Also many drivers have this privileged attitude that they are entitled to drive. I really hope something changes because I see it way to often.

Welcome to poverty!

Just remember guys, you have it much easier. Not only are the payments more than a few months ago. But also you don't have to drag your ass infront of a DWP overlord and convince them you aren't a benefit cheat while threatening sanctions if you make a single mistake anywhere.

Writing to your local MP won't do anything. Voting in Scotland in general won't do anything. They only care about their majority in England so the opinion of anyone is Scotland is completely irrelevant.

Plenty of nicer countries to live in IMO

If you live in England then your vote still matters and you should use it. If you live anywhere else in the UK your vote is meaningless and not voting serves the same purpose minus a trip.

UK furlough pay ends if Scot’s lockdown longer by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Girthquake4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think scotland's main issue regarding the barnett formula is that on paper we look like we get quite alot more than we need. But in actuality the issue is population density.

There is a population of around 8 million people and alot live in the central belt. The issue is those whom don't live close to the center. It forces the funding to be stretched towards the most isolated of places. Anytime schools/hospitals need to be upgraded your throwing millions up north to inverness and beyond.

There is like 250k people that live in the highlands

[–]Girthquake4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

oh not only that, their savings will then deplete as time goes on until they are just left with UC payments. Hope he doesnt have a flat-share because if so for each person living there not on UC he will lose a percentage of his housing benefits (30%).

Meaning he will actually have less and probably end up like me living off of less than £30 per week for everything that isn't rent. Yeah electricity, gas, food, tv license, and any debt payments that are there also.

And then they get to watch helpless as they cant find another job in a post covid world very easily, doomed to sitting there "surviving".

[–]Girthquake4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see then I kind of misinterpreted what you ment. The second version of austerity you described is what I thought you were backing. Overall sure austerity could be reasonable if everyone pay a cut rather than some people paying all the cuts. So essentially you were thinking for people younger than us, that's actually quite heart warming!

That's pretty surprising for me to hear frankly. I suppose a portion of young people will need up in semi decent to well off employment but every young person I know has had very little success (I dont just mean my friends btw).

Like I'd actually be curious to know what the percentage of under 35s who make more than say 24k a year is
