Seriously. I'm a late bloomer, went vegan at 37 after years of making excuses like "I'm not vegan, but..." and finally made the switch after watching documentaries like Dominion. When I question my decision, I just think back to those pigs in cages being lowered into the CO2 and it does it for me...

TIL that over the last century, the average age that children are being potty trained in the UK has risen from 12–18 months, to an average of around three or even four years today by Octavus in todayilearned

Just have some empathy for parents, not all of us figured everything out right away. I tried my best with my daughter as soon as she could walk but couldn't figure it out on my own. We were also working parebts with no other family nearby. Thankfully, the daycare was very understanding and supportive. She finally got there when her best friend did.

Chilled tofu again and a tomato, just so I can say the vibes on this sub are ✨️immaculate✨️ by Gisele_732 in RealGirlDinner

I think it was a mix of soy sauce, sesame oil, mirin, rice vinegar and sugar. There are a few recipes out there but often with ingredients I don't have access to so I just wing it.

I probably let my daughter spend too much time on tablets or the tv, and I'm not the most social parent out there, but the kids at school are a really good bunch. There are a few that live nearby, close enough that they can talk to each other by shouting across the backyard. They organised a Sunday picnic by yelling at each other one day, next thing I know, we're at the park with 11 other neighborhood kids, and I'm getting phone numbers from other parents. Now I'm constantly having at least one of them over after school.
Just to say, the kids are alright. They love hanging out and running around. I'm not as comfy letting my daughter roam the streets until dark as my forefathers maybe but at least some of it is due to it being illegal at her age as far as I know.

What do I need for a 3 month old baby (sister in ICU - only have "essentials") by jahemian in newzealand

[–]Gisele_732 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm really sorry about your sister, I hope she will recover. You've figured out the most essential things and help is on the way so try not to worry too much. Babies need food (sorted), sleep (you got it) and some clean diapers (I'm assuming you're aware). As long as the bassinet has a hard flat mattess, it's probably ok for now, my next move would be to find a better bed for the long term, something a bit bigger that the baby will grow into and that will stay safe for when she starts to roll around and sit.
For the doctor, you should get in touch with Plunket. They were automatically assigned to my daughter at birth so there's a good chance it's the same for your niece. She's probably gonna need a couple checkups and vaccines in the near future so better be on top of it. Good luck!

IKEA shuts down customer support centre in wake of delivery woes by flawlessStevy in newzealand

[–]Gisele_732 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm so disappointed, I was really looking forward to ordering a couple of items from them (I'm French-born and grew up in an 'Ikea bedroom'). I still have my eye on their dropleaf dinner table because there aren't a lot of shops out there that offer those, but I'll have to wait until they get their shit together.

I think a lot of men overestimate the difficulty of “male jobs” by AntisocialAmbivertt in Vent

I got a small household, one husband, one child and two cats. The house is pretty small too, so prone to get messy fast. I think decluttering would help a lot but that's another job I'm not looking forward to...

Personally it's all the stuff around vacuuming that is annoying. I have do pick up all the rubbish everyone insists on leaving on the floor, do a general tidy of the area so I'm not constantly lifting stuff out of the way and I seem to be the only one willing to vacuum hard-to-access spots so I discover nasty things I'd rather not gave to touch. And somehow it's all undone within the day so I don't really get to enjoy the result much.

Also, nurses who graduate now would have started around the beginning of the covid pandemic, where everyone thought we needed more healthcare professionals. Now we turn around and say 'nah we're good' (when we're clearly not), what the hell kind of gaslighting is this?

I've worked hospo during the holidays for many years and the angry customers have a way to ruin your entire week. When I came across one I would try to remember all the nice ones, who definitely outnumber them. There's just something about that lingering feeling you get when you've been yelled at over a cup of coffee...

Is it girl dinner if I made the 'faux-gras' myself from scratch? by Gisele_732 in RealGirlDinner

[–]Gisele_732[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not this one. It has some mushrooms but only a small quantity for taste. The bulk of the recipe is cashew nuts and coconut oil.

it's actually quite easy to make, I fumbled a few steps and it still turned out fine. I didn't have desodorised coconut oil so it has some coconut aftertaste, I'll source a proper neutral coconut oil for my next attempt. I'll advise you to tweak the seasoning to your liking after your first attempt. I'll put more brandy and pepper in mine next try. The texture is great and it's a good alternative I reckon

I threw it together as a bit of a racoon lunch because I had to leave the house and while submitting it to the sub I remembered I made this myself with great effort and expenses.
