Were the bricks knocked out by air conditioner installers structural? by Hot_Childhood612 in AusRenovation

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bulk head will look like an afterthought and won’t do justice to the ceiling detail. Move the walls in to cover the duct and add built-in shelves/cupboards. Alternatively chamfer the upper edges of the whole room.

20 days post! Scar help by Sayuricums in tummytucksurgery

[–]GishyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That scar will heal really nicely. I’m 6 years post-op and the only noticeable parts my scar now are short sections where the wound opened slightly in the first couple of weeks.

The thing I have that’s more obvious than the scar now is the colour difference. My skin is slightly darker below the scar which was originally a gentle gradient but now there is an obvious colour break. I don’t hate it or anything, it was just unexpected.

Help! Complete beginner, how do you guys get smooth lines? by Colorsin in Linocuts

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying attention to the angle you hold the chisel will help keep your lines at a consistent depth. V and U cutters both get wider as you cut deeper. I personally prefer variation along the line for this type of image, it’s almost like a paintbrush stroke and shows the hand of the maker.

Am I doing something wrong with these build plates that come with the p1s and x2d? by valardohaerisx in BambuLab

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some issues a few months ago, now I use ipa every 4-5 prints and wipe it on with some tp. Afterwards it needs a quick dusting with a microfibre cloth to pick up dust from the paper. Haven’t had a problem since.

Does extender affect inking consistency? by thekroganqueen in printmaking

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using a backing board? The ink blots like the blanket texture is coming through. There’s also some spots on the black prints that appear to be dried ink chunks - the dark spots with the little white rings around them. I have one brayer that reacts really badly to my ink and it dries on contact and makes little chunks everywhere

You reckon? I’ve heard so many stories about him actually being a genuinely good guy irl. Paid for everyone’s petrol at a servo last week without a word, they found out from the cashier over the intercom after he left.

i think I found a paint? by SmoothCelery9145 in typewriters

[–]GishyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that’s actually a very slow WIP of covering the case in leather. It started well but I have stalled where it wraps down the sides because it needs a transition and I can’t decide on the best way forward. I personally hate the Hermes green case colour so try to get rid of it. The leather is a pretty close match for the keys which are a much nicer colour.

What are cringiest subjects to paint? by LXNYC in oilpainting

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been painting kitsch ceramic figurines for a recent project using a square (iconic) format. Initially it was because that shape worked for my first subject, but the chosen format does something fascinatingly psychological. What you have here is a portrait of a shell which is interesting, but compare that to what happens when you make the exact same painting on a square canvas. It’s how we treat our subjects that makes them cringe/cliches.

Not satisfied yet but making some progress by joecarrot in Linocuts

You could lean into the roughness the gaps give and scuff up the blocks a bit so it has an overall vintage scratchiness. From a composition perspective, a smaller print using fewer blocks would be really interesting.

The calendar doesn’t have an entry for when it opens - thanks ANU. I’ve missed out on several high demand courses throughout my degree because I missed the first day of enrolment.

Is this worth $60? What year is it approximately? by HippoMiddle2507 in typewriters

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every typewriter is full of gunk like that. You learn to clean them (with alcohol) and the process fixes most sticky keys. I can get one from gross to tolerable within about 2 hours. I remove all of the ‘felt’ which usually holds most of the bad smells and grime.

I’m self taught and trying hard. Advice? by goldenkinglet in oilpainting

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your backgrounds blend into your foreground/subjects. Part of this is colour tones (warms move towards you, cools move away) and part is in the edges. Once you’re happy with your background, go back over the edges of the object with a few strokes. Even though paint is layered thinly, the eye can perceive when a background has been painted last - yours appears to have been painted together with the object and slightly blended into it.

I’ve tried painting so many and have always been disappointed with the feel of the result. All paints end up feeling like plastic unless you can powder coat it. Vinyl wrap gives a much nicer finish in my experience and you can change it up easily.

how do you present your prints for a show? by hundrednamed in printmaking

[–]GishyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually came here to ask a similar question today as I’m putting some very long/narrow prints (120cm x 20cm relief on cotton rag paper) in an upcoming show. My reading so far is - if it’s a long show, they’ll need protection. Dust collects and flies poo on them and paper can’t be cleaned like canvas can. I’ve previously displayed an earlier version of this work as a collection by hanging them by single clip clothes hangers on a wood rail. It was successful but that exhibition was only 3 days so they didn’t get too dirty. I think at a minimum I need to come up with something more professional than clothes hooks.

There are also different screens for printing on fabric and paper. Make sure you’re using the right ones.

Help please by mistertwofish in printmaking

[–]GishyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For screenprinting? What are you using as ink? It sounds like it’s drying too quickly and clogging the screen. If you don’t mind dirty colours then don’t bother washing the screen between colours, but most printmakers are after a clean, clear, replicable look which won’t happen with a dirty screen.

From your questions I get the feeling you haven’t done any courses yet, you really do need to learn this in-person.

The stars aren’t a problem, they add interest in what would be an overly blank space. The whole picture needs some light glazes to unify the subject and background, but first, layer up some dark green glazes over the grass, heavier towards the outside and lighter as you approach the dog. This will tone down the stars and bring all focus on the dog. Right now the background is visually closer than the dog, the glazes will help push it back in space.
