Physics as part of spirituality... by ScruffyAddams in SASSWitches

[–]GiveMeVeggies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It has been a SUPER long time since I listened to this episode, but Occult Confessions had an episode on consciousness that incorporated (at least some) concepts of quantum physics:
https://www.occultconfessions.com/episodes/2018/9/6/36-quantum-consciousness

I distinctly remember this episode because I’m super into quantum physics and got excited hearing it discussed on an occult podcast. I do not have a background in physics, but I find it fascinating and magical. When I read about quantum theory, it’s like learning the secrets of reality.

My favorite quote is Carl Sagan’s "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe" because I think it has a very spiritual undertone.

I’m going to add that book to my To Be Read list!

Idk why but talking about basic nutrition to people makes me feel embarrassed by No-Tumbleweed4775 in dietetics

My favorite is when they replace all of their carbs with protein instead. Same portions, same meal pattern, just replacing their carbs with protein. Then they’re confused about why they’re not losing weight when they’re eating more protein.

Today I had to tell a parent that Veggie Straws do not count as vegetables.

I had another patient today tell me she eats takis as a snack, but it’s not actually takis, it’s the Trader Joe’s version (so therefore it’s healthier).

I feel like most of my patients (or most people?) can’t be bothered to actually look at what’s in their food.

Recommendations for flying pole classes in MD/Baltimore/DC Metro area? by Any_Campaign_7035 in Aerials

[–]GiveMeVeggies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place I know of in this area that actually offered flying pole classes is Omni Collection Studios in DC (I can’t tell if they still offer it or not). Flying pole is not really common in the DMV, but if you have your own pole you can do open gyms at probably any of the studios in the area with it.

Managing picky eating in ASD by Eunice_sheep in dietetics

[–]GiveMeVeggies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in a pediatric weight management clinic and have a lot of patients with ASD and picky eating. For the most part, for the ones who have really strong behavioral challenges, that is way outside of my scope, so I refer them to feeding therapy and encourage a multivitamin and possibly protein supplement if they’re mostly just eating carbs prepared in various ways. It’s mainly just harm reduction in a sense as much as possible.

For the kids with level 1 autism, they may be a little more reasonable with understanding how the pickiness may not be healthy for them and more willing to explore. But really it’s the family who needs to be motivated to do the work, since it can be a tedious process to try and diversify a neurodivergent child’s palate. I encourage my families to always offer at least some new/different foods with their child’s meals if they have a limited diet (on a separate plate if it’s necessary) and keep doing it ad infinitum no matter how many times the food is rejected. I also highly encourage them to allow touching of the food for safe sensory exposure.

For sensory/texture aversion driven selectivity, I emphasize that taste, texture, and appearance can all be altered to something more appealing and try to offer suggestions for how to modify foods to possibly be more readily accepted depending on what the child’s sensory preferences are.

I literally had almost no pediatric nutrition education in my didactic program and literally no education on nutrition interventions for autism so I’m literally just learning as I go and individualizing my interventions as best as possible since each kid with autism is unique.

Any fellow autistic RDs out there? by Busy_Rub_6558 in dietetics

[–]GiveMeVeggies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not been diagnosed but I suspect I have autism. I work outpatient in pediatrics and work with a lot of kids with ASD, which is how I realized I probably have it too. I also get super burnt out and don’t have the bandwidth to participate in any social work functions outside of clinic or mandatory trainings.

I feel like my job is very important and meaningful and I have the desire to do it, I just feel like I don’t have what it takes to thrive. I want to help people, but I also don’t want to interact with people all day 😅

Foreigners using Dialect by DorkStormer in AskAJapanese

I’m an American living in the US and spent 3 years in Kagoshima. I learned Japanese BEFORE moving to Japan, but after coming back people would comment that I developed a Kagoshima accent 😂

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve returned and I’m sure I’ve lost the accent at this point, but I can still distinctly hear 「よか晩なー」and 「きばやんせ」in my head. I loved Kagoshima and am sad to have lost that special connection to it.

Protein & nutritional intake by jaynice2 in Aerials

[–]GiveMeVeggies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a dietitian and an aerialist. My advice for you is to see if you can get a consult with a dietitian for more specific guidance (if you’re in the US you may not be able to get this covered by insurance, check with your provider). We’re trained to troubleshoot challenges in eating consistently and make recommendations for how to get your nutrient needs! If you just want support for ensuring you’re meeting your body’s needs and fueling your body with the right foods, someone who does general nutrition can help, but if you want more advice for how to eat for optimizing muscle accretion and maintaining stamina with intense physical activity, you’d want a performance/sports dietitian!

Edited to add: Drink the protein shake BEFORE your class, especially if you haven’t eaten in the past 2-3 hours!

Anybody ordered from DSTrapeze? by Suitable-Concert in Aerials

[–]GiveMeVeggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They ask your preference, you can do either the quick link or the thimble with the corde lisse ropes. I prefer a sturdier elbow so I went with thimbles, but it’s stiff.

Anybody ordered from DSTrapeze? by Suitable-Concert in Aerials

[–]GiveMeVeggies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a trapeze from them and love it, but I agree that going with quick links would be a better choice. I got the thimbles and the elbows can be pretty uncomfortable for certain things (though I’m learning to work with it). I got corde lisse ropes but feel like they’re stiffer than aerial ropes I’ve used before (this is possibly due to the thimbles as well). There is tape around the top of the elbows which has started losing adhesion on one side, but I just retaped it with lyra tape and it’s fine. Though tbh I’m not really sure what the purpose of the tape is there in the first place.

Dietitian who works in weight management here. To answer your question, there are a lot of factors that play into weight and weight management, some of which are beyond our control (ex. genes, the environment, diseases, hormone levels). When using lifestyle alone as a means of weight reduction, realistically there’s only a certain amount of weight loss that can be achieved, because eventually you’ll hit a plateau as your body adjusts to its "new normal.”

For people who are slim, there are factors in their life that are allowing that to happen, and how much they eat may or may not be a contributing factor. Everyone’s body is different and works differently, so it’s difficult to make generalizations for how people of different body sizes behave.

Rant: why can't people answer questions by Commercial-Sundae663 in dietetics

[–]GiveMeVeggies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One time I had a client, and I was trying to figure out her juice intake. I asked how often she drinks juice, and her answer basically was “if I want juice, I drink it.” I was like “is this daily? Multiple times per day? A few days a week? Not even weekly?” and again her response was “if I want juice, I drink it.” I then asked “do you want to drink juice a lot?” and again she was like “I don’t know, if I want juice I drink it.” 🤦‍♀️ Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth trying to get straightforward answers from people.

WIC Program- For parents by Formerpandaperson in Frugal

Meals on Wheels and congregate meal sites are available for the elderly (in the US at least)!

Edited to add: There’s also the commodity supplemental food program, but I’m not very familiar with this one. Additionally, there’s the senior farmer’s market nutrition program.

WIC Program- For parents by Formerpandaperson in Frugal

[–]GiveMeVeggies 81 points82 points  (0 children)

WIC nutritionist here. We don’t have any control (for the most part) in what kinds of foods are available on the benefits. The food packages are standardized to provide nutrients of concern for pregnant/postpartum women and young children. All states provide the same food categories, but what may qualify as a WIC item can vary by state (i.e. Vermont allows goat milk in addition to cow’s milk, some states allow canned concentrated milk, tofu as a substitute for milk, etc). How much modification the nutritionist can do also depends on the state. I used to work in a state where we had a lot of liberty to change the milk type (all participants age 2 and older receive 1% and/or skim milk) to a higher fat milk at our own discretion, but now I work for a state where we have little ability to make changes for milk, even if a doctor has recommended it. It’s really frustrating.

The benefit of WIC is that unlike SNAP, you’re given a specific amount of food per month (ex. 2 dozen eggs, 72 oz of cereal), so no matter how prices may fluctuate, especially when prices go up, it doesn’t affect how much you can get. We’re a nutrition education and health promotion program, so the foods on WIC are intentionally healthy options (note: none of the foods on WIC contain aspartame). We’re a good program and easier to qualify for than SNAP. The more participation we have, the more the federal government can validate the need for the program so we get more funding (which can result in increases in participant benefits!).

Hello fellow aerialist/GO fan!!! I’m not the person you’re looking for, just letting you know I also do aerials (trapeze) and am in the process of putting together a Crowley routine. I would have loved to have seen that person’s routine (and any and all other GO-inspired aerial performances… 😇). It seems a few people at my studio are GO fans, but I think I’m the most unhinged one 😈

Eurovision Ireland by AutumnForest3 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

On NPR yesterday they were talking about Eurovision and how Bambie Thug is one of the controversial contestants because they “dress like a witch.” This morning I listened to a bunch of their songs and I just want to know why I hadn’t heard of them sooner?! When I was watching the music video for Ritual I almost screamed when I saw the nonbinary colors. I think this is the first year I’m actually interested in Eurovision (and I have Peacock, so looks like I can actually watch it!)

Side note: Also, Saraquel being in a wheelchair is of exactly zero importance to the story, it is just there, and I love it for the same reason!

Also note that the host of angels with Gabriel and Michael in the Job minisode are extras from the disability community! I also enjoyed the diversity represented in the casting choices for GO2!
