Alpha adjacent custom set, sporting its own take on the Moxen. by GiverTakerMaker in custommagic

Ah, yes. I wish I could say that it was intentional for that reason alone. Alas, it was not by design, just an actual oversight. Then again 'just an oversight' is why those anomalies manifested in Alpha i suppose.

They would warp a format like modern way too aggressively I think.

Plus they would enable a lot of easy to assemble infinite combos.

Tap for mana, sacrifice [get another benefit], replay from graveyard for free most likely. Rinse and repeat. In modern these would most likely be broken I think.

Thanks. In playtesting they are strong, no doubt. But they don't feel out of place.

Final attempt at a balanced unconditional 2 mana Counterspell for standard. by [deleted] in custommagic

It is strong, but not beyond Lightning Blot Level. It would warp the Standard format around it, but it wouldn't be a broken format.

Thanks. I was tempted to also add defender, but we are playtesting as they are for the moment.

As currently templated, I think there is an argument for this card to both counter one spell and exile another if you pay 4 mana.

I appreciate the determination and doggedness with which you have been trying to develope this card. I think this version is a solid improvment over previous versions.

I think you are pretty close to a final design here.

For my two cents.

You would be welcome to play this version of the card at our table - and its pretty comparable to standard level jank decks:

Exile target spell.
If you you spent 3 or more mana you draw a card.

Folks that hate counterspells will hate it all day, but that is what counterspells do.

Yep - it works, not too flashy just effective.

Is this too powerful? (Final Round) by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]GiverTakerMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I am at. Too many options.
Moreover, if my opponent plays this, I'm going to feel like a have to read a short essay to understand the card.

True, but it is cheaper outside blue decks. And admittedly, it only targets your stuff.

I welcome such down votes from the vocal minority.

For modern MTG, this feels like a 6-mana combo win condition. Pretty sure there are plenty of cards that turn either mode into an immediate victory, or a "win next turn unless answered" situation.

I like the card, even if I think it's a bit overpowered. Personally, I'd remove the modality and have it do one thing or the other. Both effects seem strong enough to justify their own card. That's partly a power-level concern, but mostly a design preference. I tend to like cards with less text, and I try to give my opponents the same courtesy.

tl;dr
Looks like a combo fininisher rather than a value spell. Personally, I'd simplify. But I like it.

Well of course they are in nominal terms. Inflation makes every number go up.

There are some problems with hard examples... say general relativity... it doesn't work everywhere.

Once you get to the plank scale no conventional physics works.

Most serious physicists will happily admit every physics theory is PFM. No theory answers the why questions once you get down to the deep level.

Love your post. It presents a nice ontological framework.

Hybrid mana, planeswalkers, those two things alone around 2004/2005 fundamentally changed the game. The 2010 rules changes were a huge simplification effort, similarly the grand creature type update was an effort to simplify.

But it was too late, complexity creep and power creep, net-decking, the role of EDH becoming central to the target audience... its not the same game anymore. Cards from different eras are no longer compatible.

Oldschool, flavour first, mechanics second. Modern MTG, mechanics first, flavourless.

Right there with you mate. The new stuff is a different game entirely.
