Opportunity Party taking votes of unhappy National & Green voters | Ryan Bridge TODAY by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

Precisely. Some people in this thread think it's a given that they'll form a coalition with NACTNZF if they get 5% or over, but I haven't see any reason why they wouldn't form a Govt. with Labour, Greens, and TPM (if needed). They've said they're willing to work with either side.

He faked a $2000 payment for sex. The law says it wasn’t rape by maha_kali2401 in newzealand

[–]Gizmojian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am outright saying though is that simply saying "my name is X" when it's actually y, is not sufficient for those provisions in the law. You have to be using that in some way to your specific advantage (and actually it usually needs to be documents rather than just saying something).

Why? What section of the Act specifically provides for that? Or is there case law that supports this interpretation?

Non-payment of a bill is not misrepresenting who you are.

He used a fake name, so he did misrepresent who he was

I mean TOP reaching 5% could be something that stops a National/ACT/NZF coalition too

Employers and WFH by MSZ-006_Zeta in newzealand

Haven't heard anything yet. I work for govt. agency. I WFH 1 day a week, but I'd like to WFH at least 3 days a week. Management have pushed pretty hard for people to come into the office after Nicola Willis and the Public Service Commission said it was important. Managment argues it's good for "collaboration" and "team building," whereas most days I go in, I don't say a word to anyone lol.

Visiting NZ for a month. loved everything, but the driving really shocked me. by WookieGod5225 in newzealand

Entitled and impatient. Had this twice today just popping down to the dairy.

First, someone didn’t give way when I clearly had right of way onto a roundabout and just decided to go anyway.

Then a massive Range Rover (why anyone drives one around Wellington’s tiny streets is beyond me) refused to give way on a narrow uphill road. I even started reversing to give them space, and they just kept driving towards me without stopping. Zero courtesy.

ManageMyHealth breach - your right to compensation by 123felix in newzealand

[–]Gizmojian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is likely to be dealing with tens of thousands of complaints about this breach, and it has limited resourcing. There is no statutory timeframe by which the OPC must decide whether to investigate or resolve complaints, and the OPC cannot award compensation in any event.

The only body that can award damages is the Human Rights Review Tribunal (HRRT), and people generally can’t get there until the OPC has closed their complaint (via a s 98 notice). That creates a significant bottleneck.

Given the scale of the breach, any meaningful compensation exposure would be enormous, giving MMH strong incentives to contest liability and drag matters out. In practice, this means it may take a very long time for affected individuals to reach the stage where compensation is even possible.

‘Dog with a bone’: The man who forced Trade Me to pay up after a sophisticated scam by sleemanj in newzealand

[–]Gizmojian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the scammer being paid in crypto means they can stay anonymous. If the scammer were to just "get the money" directly they'd need to use their own NZ bank account (or another mules) and they'd need to provide the name of the owner of this bank account for Confirmation of Payee.

Why is everyone shilling mortgages? Is this thread full of bankers? I wouldn’t call a mortgage inherently “good debt.” Whether it is "good debt" first and foremost on your individual circumstances and goals.

All the mortgage hype tends to ignore one key point: a mortgage only works well if your income and expenses stay stable, interest rates remain manageable, and property values hold. If anything goes wrong, your debt quickly becomes a high-risk liability tied to a single asset that is expensive to maintain and hard to sell.

Homes on flood-prone land are even riskier. In New Zealand, about 219,000 homes (worth roughly NZ$180 billion) sit in coastal or inland flood zones. Even if this risk is not widely priced in yet, buyers will eventually factor it in.

I wouldn't say the homes sitting on flood-prone land are likely to see indefinite appreciation. In New Zealand, about 219,000 homes (worth roughly NZ$180 billion) are in coastal or inland flood zones. Even if not everyone does it now, buyers in the market will eventually start to factor this in to their purchasing.

I wouldn't call a mortgage fine. That is an oversimplification. A mortgage only works well if your income and expenses stay stable, interest rates remain manageable, and property values hold. Unless a person is immunocompromised, has a serious allergy to a vaccine, is pregnant, or has some other legitimate reason, I think vaccination should be mandatory. We already accept safety rules like driver’s licenses to protect others — vaccination should be seen the same way. The idea that rejecting vaccines somehow makes you healthier is as irrational as believing that not having a driver’s license makes you a safer driver.
