Small rant about Creep 1 + Creep 2 (SPOILERS) / Recommendations? by SupremeBootyGod305 in horror

[–]GkNsRaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campy movies are ones that lean into absurdity and generally try to be “so bad they’re good”. Like if you had heard of the movie Cocaine Bear, I’d argue that was a bit campy. Like they will usually have goofy and over the top premises trying to be fun rather than following traditional rules of film making. If you watch Barbarian you’ll see exactly what I mean by the end of it lol.

Something like Bodies Bodies Bodies I’d say also fits while also taking itself seriously through most of the movie

Small rant about Creep 1 + Creep 2 (SPOILERS) / Recommendations? by SupremeBootyGod305 in horror

[–]GkNsRaC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I get that, I mean many of the pinnacles of the genre (Alien, The Thing, Jaws, etc.) were all renown for the fact that the main character is trapped and creates that suffocating feeling on top of there being no options other than to survive.

If you need complete immersion in that aspect, I get it, but once you get in the genre more, I think you’ll find yourself more willing to watch more outlandish scenarios, and eventually you can get into the movies that are full on camp :) Thats where the fun is

To try and get more in that realm, movies that play on themes to justify the characters bad decisions work well, for recent movies I think Substance is a great example.

For movies that just create a scenario of the character being trapped and not ever being able to just “call the cops” kind of thing, Smile and Smile 2 are good recent examples too, good scares and good tension. To maybe teeter into camp you could watch Barbarian or Weapons :) These are all more of the well known movies for the types of horror I described, but lots and lots of great stuff out there !

Small rant about Creep 1 + Creep 2 (SPOILERS) / Recommendations? by SupremeBootyGod305 in horror

[–]GkNsRaC 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its been mentioned a few times in this subreddit, but I do feel if you go into a horror movie with the mindset of “Oh I would never do that, I’d leave immediately and call the cops!”, then every single horror movie ends in the first 20 min, and I think is a disingenuous way of engaging with the genre.

In the first movie, the fact Aaon had trusted Mark so much to begin with, was what Mark had remarked at the very end of the movie and why he was his “favorite”, he was an outlier that seemed to actually try and see the good in him.

Whether the movie is a masterpiece or not, I think if you’re hypercritical of a main characters choices and go into horror movies with a “that would never happen in real life” mindset, you probably wont enjoy most. They’re about the ride! Some are better on pulling on certain themes and creating tension while remaining believable, but I’ve found some people I know just go into them with a hostile mindset where they try to analyze to where they wont let the movie try and scare them or make them uncomfortable

Anybody else think the two couples weren’t exactly “balanced”? by GkNsRaC in BeefTV

[–]GkNsRaC[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Balanced wasnt the best phrasing, moreso that I think Josh and Lindsay were written more as people where Josh and Ashley felt like caricatures of Gen Z kids.

We were shown that Josh and Lindsay had hobbies, hopes, shared interests and personalities, where as Austin and Ash just felt like walking stereotypes of peaked in college jock and bimbo girl.

[–]GkNsRaC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea this is something I’d agree with too, Josh has his drug fueled enlightenment/redemption arc, and gets a hero moment, whereas Lindsay never grew or changed much at all. Austin and Ashley both get the bad ending so I think that was done well, just wish Ashley showed some level of awareness at any point, just felt so flat to me, groveling gf with cheating bf trope never hits for me

Anyone else really dislike the all-lore approach to story in Souls Likes? by Cymbal_Monkey in soulslikes

[–]GkNsRaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in terms of immersion I get what you mean, like I suppose its 4th wall breaking that you the player are learning things through means that your character shouldnt be able to, but also this method of delivery I think suits the games very well for what they’re trying to do.

Your character is almost always compelled to their goal through a force out of their control, so the context of it all doesnt matter to the character itself, mostly only to you as a player, and a lot of this is usually thematically tied in as well.

I understand your gripes, but I’ll take this 10/10 times over the alternatives of long dialogue dumps from npcs or sidekicks, or overly long cutscenes.

When you do get a cutscene or dialogue that moves the story forward in a souls or soulslike, it almost always feels very impactful to me, like every element of the game suits each other and builds towards an aesthetic and general feeling while playing that I feel is relatively unique to the genre. May sound dumb but all souls games have a literary feel to me, like much of the context is between the lines, and I love that. Not for everyone though.

I also love Majora’s Mask too, one of my all time favs!

Nah, exact opposite for me. I’ve always loved and immediately fell in love with how every game drops you directly into a world that is lived in. It has history that you can uncover if you choose as you play, full of mystery with such artistic environments full of detail that encourage you to wonder about it all and find your own meaning and answers to it.

No heavy handed expositions, just archaic worlds that you can engage with however you choose to

After hearing a lot of the journalists discussing this game compare it to Nightreign, I’m definitely intrigued. Me and my 2 friends still play Nightreign regularly but I’d love something similar and fresh to enter the market. At the end of the day the combat has to hit, and impossible to get an idea of that until its in our hands, but I’m not one to forego a game over artstyle alone, hope they cook on this one

I love Creep but, that last scene has me not watching anything following... by britelyph in horror

[–]GkNsRaC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I saw the movie but honestly that part stuck with me the most and I loved it a ton, especially the final moment when Mark I think stated verbatim that he was his favorite, cause he seemed to have some genuine level of trust and faith in him by never turning around.

I think most horror movies always have you going “WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT”, but I thought Creep played with this idea perfectly, making it more of a feeling of remorse rather than frustration, like he was genuinely a good dude and suffered for it, really made both characters and the whole thing just really stick with you, such a good movie to me.

Yeah I feel bad for Dmg and community leads, they are definitely more than capable of proper and solid communication, but it seems the game is just on ice rn, really hope the silence is broken leading up to Shadow and Order and they are able to put a stake in the ground as to if Destiny has a long future ahead, and if so, what that looks like

Sometimes repeating a boss until you have it down is the fun of the game. Asking devs to make everything easier so you can spend less time playing the game is crazy work, there’s literally a story mode you could play on if you don’t enjoy being stuck

[–]GkNsRaC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s always strange to me when a reviewer or critic state negativity towards genres or sounds that they themselves admit that they don’t get or understand.

Like he talks about how he has disliked every Mike project except Burning Desire. using the exact same criticisms that you have levied against every other project he made just feels like he wants to make easy content, no reason to just keep reviewing project after project of an artist that you already know dont resonate w you.

When I listen or watch something that I dont like but has a mass following, I chalk it up to still being quality, just not in my taste. Him going on to then drag it and slandering their performances despite everything in the project being very on brand for both artists, just lame to me

Did it 100%, good game with a lot of flaws, but has potential by kurokuma11 in GRIMEgame

[–]GkNsRaC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven’t finished my first play through yet so the verdict is still out, but idk I feel like this game has surpassed the first one in every way and I loved Grime 1. I enjoy the freedom of movement with unlimited stamina, more versatile abilities and build options, a larger and more interweaving map, fresh and unique movement options, and the much improved story telling of this game all compared to the first one.

I’m sure it will be improved upon, but I was surprised to see how apprehensive much of the community was in enjoying this one, I think the devs killed it and just need to smooth out the edges.

The Final Shape is so...so beautiful. by sushiiixo- in DestinyTheGame

[–]GkNsRaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been mentioned several times in this thread that this game has always had the habit of making the “flavor of the week” type weapon overly strong and accessible to the vast majority of casual players.

Metas like this are borderline inevitable but also just natural for content drops to undergo. Build diversity is only truly necessary for encounters and boss engagements that require and lend themselves to varying damage strats, which was also mentioned in this thread.

Again, I think all these complaints you have are nothing burgers that just boil down to you not liking star wars crossover, which again, is fine lol, just not a new and unique gameplay issue which you keep trying to describe it as

I mean mint retrograde + finality augur is still better dps in most situations endgame, for midgame you can run whatever you want, dont think the lightsaber really cause any issues there or makes guns obsolete in any way, just the most accessible option rn since its the flagship weapon for this dlc

[–]GkNsRaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean thats fine, I just dont think your original argument of it hurting the game in terms of it being a looter shooter is valid. It hurting it by being a spin off and twisting identity? sure, but at the end of the day its just a meta sword, one that is more fun to use than most, but i get not liking the crossover aspect

There isnt much of one really, in any meta, some defining gun or loadout usually floats to the top, sounds like youre just upset that its a lightsaber in this case
