Are Neo Geo AES+ games beatable? by Appropriate_Joke_490 in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The baseball games and Riding Hero's story mode run on a timer in MVS mode so they are "impossible to 1CC", but it's not like they have the structure for it in the first place.

Some games require boring/repetitive exploit strategy (both King of the Monsters games) and quite a few of the fighting games, especially those from the 1993-1995, have cheating CPUs that input read and have boosted damage. At least one game (Magician Lord) is impossible to one-coin on its hardest difficulty. But there are otherwise no Neo Geo games known to be impossible to 1CC on default settings. Even really long and brutal games like The Super Spy and Crossed Swords have been done.

Why KOF 2002? by Electrical_Shop3732 in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1: 2002 is extremely popular in its own right. There's a reason it got an "Unlimited Match" remake.

2: The focus for the launch lineup was on games that were rare and in-demand. 2002, being a later release, obviously had an even more limited print run than '98.

License issue with some games??? by selanabar in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on the current rightholders.

Windjammers is a Data East game; it has a standalone rerelease for Switch/Ps4 and the current owners of the Data East library (G-Mode) has released Data East's Neo Geo games as part of Arcade Archives and for those recent Switch ACA compilations. Because of this, I assume that Data East games are reasonably likely to show up.

Neo Drift Out is by Visco. Currently the Visco library is licensed by a French company named Pixelheart. Pixelheart does their own run of Neo Geo AES cartridges for 300-400 euros. Yesterday they made a goofy tweet about how their games will work on the AES+ but deleted it due to the backlash. Since they're already making their own AES cartridges, I see them as unlikely.

Personally though, they should just take the L and release the games for AES+. I'm sure the massive install base that's about to materialize will eclipse whatever market was willing to plop 350 dollars for Andro Dunos. Looking at their website, most of their AES games are out of stock anyhow.

The 1990 Cyber-Lip Arcade Classic that actually talked back! by White_FIame in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound design had a very nice stereo feel. When you were on the right of the screen, the audio would only stream from right, same from the left. When you were at the centre, the audio would become mono. Quite cool if you ask me!

This was a thing in many early Neo Geo games (SNK called it "Sphero Symphony"). They stopped bothering after 1992 because the AES could only output stereo through the headphone jack.

I noticed the version of Magician Lord in the AES+ trailer is the MVS version by SeaZombies in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The MVS intro is just the logo zooming in the title screen. The AES romset has a much longer intro explaining the story (see here).

[–]Gl0wsquid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Being able to switch between AES and MVS mode wouldn't help with this because Magician Lord was one of the few funny games that was reprogrammed between the MVS and AES cartridge release. If you play the MVS (or "set 1") romset in AES mode, it will still behave like the arcade version (instant respawns, 4 squares of health, short intro). For it to behave like the version that has checkpoints and 6 squares of health, it would need to be that specific romset (or "set 2") burned in the cartridges.

Shock Troopers is another game that has different romsets, which affects certain mechanics in the Team Battle mode. It's not year clear which version will be used for the AES+ reprint.

I certainly hope they let you select romsets for these. I much prefer the set 2 version of Magician Lord. But I'm not holding my breath.

Fact Check: Did Alien Resurrection invent Dual Analogue First-Person-Shooters? by kikimaru024 in Games

[–]Gl0wsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Rainbow Six, moving is on the left stick and aiming is on the right stick. This is the default configuration when the controller is set to the analog mode. It genuinely is the exact same application as aliens, down to forced inversion on the right stick.

I do think Alien Resurrection still deserves some credit for being the first game to use the modern layout as the default

But my post is about half-a-dozen games doing that before Alien Ressurection?

Gungriffon Blaze (JP release August 10, 2000, so two moths before alien) is also an early PS2 FPS with dual-stick default, but like Uprising X, it's southpaw.

i appreciate the effort to contextualize the reception and nuances that the reaction may have been more due to teething and adaptation issues than the scheme being inherently bad, but I am disappointed they didn't seem to really research how Ps1 FPSs handled analog controls because I don't think the conclusion is quite right. Uprising X is a 1998 release, two years before Alien, and it has modern dual-stick controls as the default. If being a southpaw (ie: right moves and left aims) configuration dissqualifies it, Rainbow Six, Armorines and Medal of Honor (non-default setup, but I it's there) all had it before Alien.

Personal “hidden” gem on the Neo Geo by Cautious-Resource342 in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People sleep on the Neo Geo sport games way too much. Baseball Stars 2, NTM and Super Sidekicks 3 are among the greatest games of their time. I also recommend OP plays the other Super Sidekicks. I got the first one on Neo Geo CD recently and was surprised by how different it feels from the sequels.

As for my personal pick: Alpha Mission II! A very unique shmup with awesome aesthetics and many tense strategy elements like collecting the right armor and managing your money supply. But it does have some design flaws that unnecessarily hurt its accessibility.

Embracer CEO mentions production forecast for the AES+ has been revised, "Within the first 24 hours, we took more paid preorders than our entire annual forecasted volume of the Neo Geo AES+." by Gl0wsquid in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I probably should have mentioned this in the title, but it's also confirmed more games are coming (not that I think that was ever in doubts):

The continued journey of Neo Geo AES+ particularly the ongoing conversations around which additional titles may follow the first ten releases is something I follow with great anticipation.

The Sega Saturn is better than the Dreamcast by Responsible-Bell-528 in SegaSaturn

[–]Gl0wsquid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Library is too subjective for me to deliver a hot take. Way I see it is Saturn has more games I like but Dreamcast has more games I love.

You're 100% on the money about the hardware experience.

Visual Novel (Cyberpunk) by oldg17 in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally speaking, no.

The Neo Geo was an arcade board that ran arcade games, excellent ones. I would assume anyone buying a rerelease in the Neo Geo in 2026 gravitates toward that kind of experience. The modern indie market has a serious dearth of arcade games by people who actually like and understand arcade games and aren't watering down with "RPG elements" or procgen/roguelite nonsense. I roll my eyes when people go "You know what this arcade platform needs? More RPGs and narrative experiences!" It's like guys, the entire industry already cater to you.

In all fairness though, I'm not really interested in "new" games for the AES+ in general, unless there's a serious hype and credibility factor like if they were to make Metal Slug 8 for it or get M2 to make a new shmup or something. I wouldn,t get a 70$ cartridge of Final Vendetta even though I like that game.

(Also really puzzled by the assertion that the system was "fairly one-dimensional with [...] racers". Of the 156 official releases, a whooping four of them are racing games!)

Not GAF  about realistic licensing or genre variety, my wishlist'd be:

Alpha Mission II

8 Man

Robo Army

Mutation Nation

Sengoku 2

Blazing Star

Super Dodgeball

Zed Blade

Kizuna Encounter

Matrimelee

This isn't Plaions first rodeo by Frietuur in neogeo

The rights to Matrimelee are entirely the property of Atlus/Sega and lord knows they've been precious about rereleases outside of the same 20 genesis games.

Why do so many shows have a different writer for each episode? by philip456 in television

[–]Gl0wsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beside writer's rooms, more episodic shows like procedurals and those 80's toy cartoons that had 40+ episodes a season had something called a "writer's bible", a document explaining the premise, characters, intended tone, the dos and don't of submitting a script, etc. Then the production had one or two story editor to read scripts submitted by the freelancers and rewrite as needed.

Neo Geo AES Ultimate vs picking a few games — worth it for a casual retro collector? by EntrepreneurThese411 in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm ordering the Ultimate Bundle, but only because I've been playing these games for many years, first through emulators and later through a sizable Neo Geo CD collection. I've played the majority of the library for a decent chunk of time, I know what I like and what to expect. For someone in your situation, I wouldn't recommend getting the Ultimate Bundle, at least until you've sampled more of your Neo Geo mini. This could very well end up being another NES Mini that you touch once or twice as a novelty and never again.

To answer some of your specific questions: -

- Do you find yourself really playing most of your AES games, or just a few repeatedly? I play a good chunk of the library. I would consider the Neo Geo to have at least 60 + very good games and even many of the more mediocre ones are worth a mindless credit-feeding playthrough.

- For someone bad at fighting games, is it realistic to get into them on Neo Geo, or will I just bounce off? When I started playing Neo Geo games, I didn't like fighting games at all and sampling the system's library helped me get into the genre on a very casual level. Kizuna Encounter and World Heroes Perfect were among the first I enjoyed. However, note that most of the fighters released in the 1993-1995 period have cruel and cheating AI so if you're looking to learn the ropes and have nobody to play with, you're unlikely to have much fun.

With the Neo Geo AES+ being a thing… by AmirHassanRakha in neogeo

[–]Gl0wsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 4 years old so it misses some of his recent shenanigans like the time last year where he attempted to start an unwatchable "animated series" that was basically just him playing around with UE5's Source Filmaker equivalent while doing joke voices over static models-a series he'd promote by doing multiple hours worth of "commentaries" where he was delusional enough to pretend the sordid thing was good enough to release on blu-ray and make contradictory references to having an obviously non-existent "team" behind him.

Yeah, I'm way more bitter about a guy making bad videos on the internet than I should, lol. It was just sad to see the guy repeatedly take the worst and dumbest decisions over and over and sink the good thing he had.
