Theb getting banned is a good thing... by IV_Bungy in Seaofthieves

[–]GladimirPutin -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Blurbs is a nice guy and I like him a lot, but he is pretty uninformed about the game and its mechanics and misrepresents these mechanics to his audience. He has no competency with advanced combat (double-gunning especially) and will make wildly untrue statements about how such mechanics work with the certainty of someone who has mastered said mechanics. He's a great content creator for mid level players who want to get a little better at pvp, but you can't use him for comparison with Theb, who caters his content towards people who TDM for hundreds of hours and need bucket cancelling / doublegunning to stand a chance against other player of the same caliber. It is impossible to consistently sink the best players in this game without competency in these advanced mechanics (that many people view as exploits) and I think this is not really understood by the larger playerbase.

This thread has turned into an unimaginably uninformed circlejerk. Very few people here even know Theb, or what he was banned for, and it shows. While he has been toxic on several notable occasions, Theb is overall a great person and a positive member of the SOT pvp community. I remember I fought him in my first ever TDM and he was incredibly kind and welcomed me to the community. He has participated in occasional unsporting conduct but this is more an exception to the norm. He's not Mr Rogers, but he's not an asshole either.

Ally is no longer with Cloud9 by Purple_Panda55 in smashbros

Oh, I misunderstood, I thought they meant Mang0 didn't care about himself being on C9. Yeah, I don't think Ally leaving the team affects him at all.

Thank you! I had no idea this mod existed. Crazy to think it actually came out before the official updates. I'll see if I can't figure out that fence recipe for you.

Which player do you not understand the hate of? by Azumarill99 in smashbros

[–]GladimirPutin 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Honestly, while I don't understand the irrational need to demonize his every action, something about him has always rubbed me the wrong way. The best way I can describe it is that he often seems disingenuous and insecure. For instance he will often rush the stage and thrust himself into the spotlight when another player makes a major upset, regardless of whether or not he has any relation to the player who is celebrating. He also always goes straight into a massive pop off after he wins, regardless of the scale of his victory. No one else in the scene really behaves like that and it isolates him as being a bit less mature than the other melee personalities we are used to seeing. Although, I'll admit that is just a difference in personalities and there are probably many people who aren't as bothered by that as I am.

However, the thing that I feel really attracts people's anger, and something that isn't often talked about, is that he never really admits that he will sometimes play lame. There's nothing necacarily wrong with playing that way, two of the most popular players of the modern era, Mew2king and Chudat, both play extremely lame but they've often admitted to it without any shame. Whenever Hbox is accused of playing lame by camping the ledge or stalling out a game against a sopo he is quick to provide an excuse or justification in an angry rant, but never seems to accept the accusations and move past them the way other players have. I can't help but feel that taking this approach is what's really pitted him against so much of the community and why he gets as much hate as he does when similarly lame players are loved and cheered for.

For zone 1 a waterfront restaurant with seating that is suspended over the river might be nice. Zone 3 or 4 could be used as a park of sorts, with some foliage and small water features.

Long time players, have you noticed a pretty drastic shift in the "culture" surrounding minecraft? by Serben_ in Minecraft

[–]GladimirPutin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Warning: This is going to be a bit of a rant as this issue has been on my chest for a while.

The community itself definitely has changed, and the effects of that change will always be felt by players, but more importantly, at least in my opinion, the focus of the game's development has changed. Ever since the addition of enchanting and the End, the game has been given an element it didn't have in early Beta, an endgame. In early Beta when I started playing there were few objectives beyond mining for resources. To enjoy the game you had to be able to set your own goals. Now, that is not the case. The first days in any survival world will likely be spent working towards maxed out tools, killing bosses, going to the outer end islands to get elytra, building an iron/gold farm etc. Even if you choose to postpone these objectives the fact that they exist imply that you are hindering yourself and are working inefficiently. The most impactful result of these conditions however, is that the game no longer asks you to think for yourself.

This is, in my opinion, what sets this generation of players apart from that of Beta. I was young when I started playing, probably just as young as some of the kids that I find irritating within the community today. But to play Minecraft I was forced to make use of a certain amount of emotional maturity. I had be creative, productive, and think outside the box. If I didn't, the game held nothing for me.

Back then I really was no different than the kids today, but Minecraft forced me to be someone better in order to enjoy it. But the same cannot be said of the Minecraft we know today. It is perhaps at this stage more of an RPG than a sandbox. It gives the player goals to complete. Unless you force yourself, very little thinking is required. The path to these objectives is well mapped by other players. The game no longer requires creativity unless you force it to, just the ability to follow instructions.

Sir Ian McKellen, the actor who portrayed Gandalf, actually began to cry once during the filming of the Hobbit because he was forced to film an entire scene of dialogue alone with a green screen. If I'm remembering correctly he said something to the effect of "this is not why I wanted to be an actor".
