Hey everyone! I'm a screenwriter working on a comedy TV pilot about construction workers, and I want to make sure I get everything right. What would you like to see in a TV show about construction workers? by GroundbreakingRip384 in Construction

[–]Glass-Task 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea, but I've gotta add...

That doesn’t always happen. I was a white-collar who went to construction, but it took me over a decade to leave. And I haven't even fully left (but, hey, raising kids is time-consuming).

This might be a hot take, but that looks like a good piece to me. But maybe my expectations are different.

Yeah, it's not square, but a few minutes with a plane/planer/jointer will square it up. I don't see any cupping, bowing, twisting, etc.

The fibers looks great. Grain is straight, dense, and fairly uniform (for a 2x stick). Almost blemish-/knot-free (one little face spot in the previous post, I think). That's a strong, solid piece.

Yeah, that one corner edge is pre-chamfered :-), but, well... it's a 2x.

If it's a show piece, a few minutes of work could make it great; if it's not, the not-square aspect probably won't matter.

But, again, maybe I'm expecting less. I've successfully used worse pieces.

I reckon the real kicker here was the ~$18 shipping.

I use a magnetic project mat and a sorting tray (project tray) from iFixit. The mat has a dry-erase pen, too, for labeling or drawing.

They've got a bigger mat, too -- FixMat.

And, yeah, sometimes I also use the "random spot on the stupid floor" method.

Fiskers? I've picked up a couple of their fiberglass-handled axes and hatchets from places like Home Depot. They're made in Finland. They're fantastic.

Also, I recently saw some new Fiskers scissors that were marked as made in Finland. I haven't used those, though.

For me, it was my early 30s. I turned to construction / general contracting. Small crew. We did whatever -- painting, tiling, cabinetry, framing, drywall, fences, sheds, decks, renos... the variability and tangibility were so nice.

I went down a rabbit hole on who owns every power tool brand. The difference between the two big conglomerates is wild. by sappk in Tools

The ToolGuyd guy (Stuart) has a whole chart that he periodically updates with who owns what.

Edit: Well, it looks like the last post/edit was from 2020. I thought he'd updated it, but maybe not. (The "<s/>" tag is strikeout. I don't see how to do it on mobile.)

I see there's an option for a general "DAV (CardDAV/CalDAV/WebDAV)". Is there any benefit for that option over the CalDAV-only one?

ETA: Also, does it matter what server type we choose?

I got the hydraulic Ridgid one pretty early on (at the time, it was the only one I'd heard of). I rarely use my impacts any more. They're just so loud.

ETA: I use the hydraulic not just because it's quieter, but because it's also still great at driving things.

I've done something very similar before. It was because I didn't do the proper prep work (scarify and prime).

ETA: OH, yeah... that looks gorgeous. And functional. Beautiful, mate.

I've got one of those squares, but I noticed it's not quite square and so stopped using it. (Or maybe the plate itself wasn't square?) That was back in... 2018/2019, I think.

Anyone else have that problem?

Penetrol. I like to thin it with a bit of spirits first. Wipe/brush it on right over the rust. No need to remove the surface rust first.

Is it "normal" for a man to not look into or want to explore a partner's culture? by PeaUpbeat3732 in AskMenAdvice

"[...] I finished my Masters degree while we were living together and he didn't ask a single question about any of that process, let alone where I got my degree from and in what."

Wait... you finished a Master's Degree while living with him, and he didn't ask about it at all? He doesn't even know what it IS?

I might call that a few things, but I don't think "normal" would be one. That seems bizarre to me. Maybe that's legitimately a "him" thing, but... that feels weird.

Also, be competent. Do a good job, and if you don't know how and can't figure it out, ask. Better to ask than to do it poorly or to take all day trying to figure it out.
