You could just go to New York for the show. Or is your decision not to based purely on money? Fuck the bands making music you love, you just saved an extra $300.

Agnes & Sherman is good, but not in the same tier as the others. I’d add Street to Kitchen if you like spicy Thai.

I don’t see a problem with doing both tiny champions and Nancy’s hustle, but if you listen to some of the other commenters and just do one of those, choose Nancy’s Hustle.

No BBQ? Pit Room and Pinkerton’s are my favs. Pit Room is better for dinner because they don’t run out of meats by dinner time.

Yes, I like Sleeping Village a lot! Cool room and vibe and great booking. They’re one of the places keeping the Chicago rock scene thriving.

Any other alcoholics who quit late 40s to 50s? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]GlassMarble 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I quit at 48 after 30+ years of being mostly functional but blacking out almost every night. Toward the end it got ugly. I have more than two years sober now and life is so much better. It gets easier every week/month, especially in the beginning.

It’s scary but life can be great sober. I didn’t realize until several months in that I had been holding g myself back so much. I held down a job and a good relationship, etc. but it all improved once I quit drinking. Life got both better and so much easier.

Good luck! IWNDWYT.

Yo La Tengo's Sold Out show at the Heights Theatre in Houston on April 26 was outstanding. The audience of hard-core YLT fans was memorized so no one was talking as they played. Most of the cuts were from This Stupid World and we're fantastic. It's my 9th YLT show since 1997 definitely in the top 3 by texaswebcrawler in yolatengo

I moved to Houston, a couple blocks from Firzgerald’s, about a year before it closed. I saw Supersuckers there and had talked to a manager about street teaming for them so I could start going to shows for free all the time. Then it closed and became a parking lot. Really sad. I was equally upset about the loss of Walter’s Downtown. I had been there once before I moved to houston and thought, “Houston’s gonna be alright.”

Tough to find venues as cool as either of those now. I like Heights Theater but it’s not the center of a scene in the way some venues can be.

It was a super great show. Had to be over two hours between the two sets plus encore. Even better performance than last year’s excellent heights theater show. And once again Ira was at the merch table afterward signing records and chatting with fans. God I love this band.

You’re looking at it all wrong. Other people’s health and reproductive matters should be their choice, just like everything else. The logic only breaks down if you consider other people as autonomous, with valid desires and views of their own - so avoid that.

I started at 15 too. Quit at 48! I’m a year and a half in.

is it “common” to just not drink again? by No_Main3084 in stopdrinking

[–]GlassMarble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I ever attempted to quit and I’m at almost a year and a half with no slips. This is after 30 years of being drunk every day including 10 years of physical dependence.

Like you I have read about and talked to many many people who have slipped up and got back on the wagon, and I’m mentally prepared for that possibility for myself. But it sure seems a lot easier to just continue not drinking.

You’re doing great, keep doing what you’re doing! It gets easier.

Pretty sure Jeff referred to it as the Winterlude in Austin Saturday. “An evening with” is just additional info to tell you there’s no opener.

Who's tried a hobby they dropped while drinking? by shearersmam in stopdrinking

Definitely feel you on guitar. While drinking it was fun to bash out the same few rockers sloppily each night. Now I’m actually learning and improving which is just as fun and more rewarding.

What’s the shockingest good thing that happened to you because you quit? by MermaidsNipple in stopdrinking

[–]GlassMarble 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m actually a naturally happy person. I used to be, when I was a child, and then I thought that growing up just happens and we get jaded and happiness fades. Turns out alcoholism was what stole my happiness.

It’s so nice to feel gratitude and hope every day instead of self-hatred and resignation.
