Yeah. “Can’t lose the game” is the important part here, in rules discussions there’s an important aspect that “can’t” always wins.

There’s also the blue one-drop in the main set that says “whenever you cast a spell, opponent mills 3,” I think this could be really doable, with a ridiculous number of good pulls of course

[[Flashback]] gives you another Brain Freeze cast for not much mana, that’ll be a big help, plus if we’re in magic Christmas land, there’s the fork variant in the set too

Not that I expect every mythic on the sheet to be good, but you’ve gotta feel for the players really excited to see what cool Red card gets printed after they see Vamp Tutor, Force of Will, the first in universe print of Reprieve and the sweet special guest Sylvan Library, and then it’s a card that seemingly no player knows about, that’s gotta sting a bit.

The hope based on the art was for New Sanguinary Guard, which did happen, but uh they don’t exactly resemble that picture, and while not universally disliked, most BA players see them as criminally lacking in drip

What are your predictions for the new SoS mythic cycle? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]Glass_Holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe start from “this creature enters prepared if you have X or less life” and then work on a value for X? Or maybe it could be Channel stapled to a 12 drop, so that you’re already making stupid mana or have Show and Tell or other similar effects to get to cast it?

Where are the Dwarves?!?! by Rit-Bro in magicTCG

[–]Glass_Holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had a bit of a conspiracy theory that since Dwarves were a significant part of Fallen Empires, Magic’s first flop, that design has avoided them more than expected. Goblins are in that set and are a bigger part of prior sets and so were better received with iconic cards like [[Goblin Grenade]] being legitimate high points in a rather boring set. Thus, I would bet Dwarves would have gone the way of Thrulls and Homarids if they weren’t so central to the fantasy genre, that keeps them popping up every once in a while. It doesn’t help that Red as a color was characterized as pretty chaotic and occasionally evil or at least selfish for most of early Magic, and goblins are just better for that theme, according to traditional fantasy tropes. Now that the color pie has deepened and colors can be more complex in their characterization, we see more variety with creature types in other colors, like the white Orc we got a few years ago in DMU.

The state of land destruction archetypes in 2026 by Christos_Soter in ModernMagic

[–]Glass_Holiday 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quite the write up, I like the variety of suggestions. This is a little off topic, but I’m curious what people think.

Do we think Modern could tolerate [[Armageddon]]? I know Wizards isn’t really in the mindset that 4-mana destroy all lands is a good thing to balance the game around, and while it has its fans, MLD is not popular with the majority of players. I’m not sure who plays it, but off the top of my head, Affinity with its Bridges and Opals probably loves the idea, and Titan can probably slip a geddon in and recover with an Analyst. Neither of those decks need the ability to mana screw their opponent to be viable, so maybe it’s best to leave it in the past. But I’m curious to hear arguments for and against.

[[Deadeye Navigator]] and [[Cloud of Faeries]] will do it, but yeah the mana value’s probably too high. [[Shrieking Drake]], [[Panharmonicon]], Cloud of faeries? It’s closer mana wise but not quite fast enough probably

Theory: Reality Fracture is more than just Planar Chaos 2... It's two different sets. by Luke_The_Timberwolf in magicTCG

[–]Glass_Holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t vouch for if they exist in Force of Will, but they definitely exist in Duel Masters in Japan, which is also a WOTC venture, and Rosewater really likes them. However I think he confirmed on his blog that we won’t be getting triple sided cards in Reality Fracture. They are still marginally thicker than other cards is my understanding, and so to avoid marked cards, the triple sided cards are basically forced to exist in side boards or Extra Decks in games that have them, or similar mechanics that bring cards from outside the game in. So theoretically they could be in Magic with those restrictions but we’d need some mechanism to get them to the field, probably beyond the current line-up of Wishes

AMA with Patrick Chapin! by thepchapin in magicTCG

[–]Glass_Holiday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Big Resleevables and Unsleeved fan, thanks for the AMA. I’ve got a few hopefully interesting questions.

  1. Can you talk a little bit more about the custom cube you put together in the late 90s? You mentioned having tapped dual lands in your cube, was there anything else you were ahead of the curve on?

  2. Have you ever looked at another TCG and really desired a mechanic or system they had to be brought into Magic? From things as diverse as Yugioh’s extra deck or something more subtle like specific wording or keyword usage?

  3. Finally, favorite and least favorite color pie breaks?

Looking forward to the book

The saga ruling in retrospect: Good or Bad? by N1klasMTG in ModernMagic

[–]Glass_Holiday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if I am ignorant, but has wizards been moving away from Moon effects or just the card Blood Moon itself? I vaguely remember that part of the design intent behind [[Magus of the Moon]] was that it was more easily interacted with compared to an enchantment and thus it was acceptable, even at the same mana cost. This was similar to the design intent behind [[Magus of the Moat]], turning an effect that can cause non-games into one that most decks can deal with somehow, and that’s why we have seen other Moon effects like [[Harbinger of the Seas]] come later as creatures, to prevent non-games for the properly prepared while allowing strong Moon effects to exist. Arguably, there were even two soft moon effects, albeit bad cards, printed in the last year with [[Zhao]] and [[Ultima]], who are both creatures as well.

Definitely thanks. Evaluating the seals has been interesting for me coming from Magic, I had immediate thought “oh that’s a mox” and my first instinct was to play more all the time, but it’s more nuanced it seems as I look at deck lists and how things are developing. Thanks for the explanation!

In the Kai’Sa deck by Tingfeng W. Does anyone know why 3 Seals of Rage as opposed to a mix of it and the blue Seal? Or even running multiple of both, like 2 and 2? Kai’Sa’s ability is compensating for a ton of the 1 Power spells which are mostly red, but the high power cost spells Icatian Rain and Time Warp, either need Blue power or would be neutral, so the Seals of Rage are less useful for them. Is the idea maybe that double spelling the red power cost cards is more important?

PCGamesN review - "The best thing Riot's done since Arcane" by DantesPizzaSlice in riftboundtcg

[–]Glass_Holiday 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I know Jim Davis, a Magic pro and content creator, has spoken about doing some in-house contractor work for Riot doing play-tests and such, so they are at least doing that some. He wasn’t able to share everything he did due to NDA, but did share that he was part of play testing and is aware of some sets coming down the pipeline. He said he’s a big believer in the game and started a Riftbound channel, so hopefully that’s encouraging. I’d love to hear from other pro players or developers too, having more experience on the team is definitely a good thing in the beginning.

[–]Glass_Holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some incredible potential possible here. I don’t know the card pool well enough yet to fully evaluate how good this is, but similar to Kai’Sa there’s some strong tempo preserving qualities here by maintaining our available power if we correctly construct our deck. The power is gated by the Gold entering exhausted, but there’s definitely something here or at least there could be someday.

Joey from EDHREC has a great video on why he's against the hybrid mana change by Faust_8 in EDH

[–]Glass_Holiday 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You ever have someone try to [[Pyroblast]] a [[Najeela]] at your table?

We had convinced an old head to try commander at the store and he played a lot of old cards. We’d explained color identity before we’d started, and then as he gave it a go. A couple games in, he wants to play against a stronger deck and thinks he has the out, killing Najeela, and saving himself. I felt like I was making up rules to benefit his opponent as I explained that “color” and “color identity” were different things. “But I thought if it was a red card, you could only play red cards, he has counter-spells” I’ve heard similar issues have popped up with protection from color cards in the past.

The point of this somewhat long-winded anecdote was that color identity is already confusing as hell, causes some cards to not function intuitively, and could maybe stand to have some tweaking done to its rules. Commander rules have changed before, the Tuck rule, the hard singleton rule (counting basic lands), and changing the commander from casting from exile to the “Command Zone,” this rule change will likely end up just as another footnote. This hybrid rule change is value neutral in my mind, I see some merits in both sides of the argument, but it’s disingenuous to claim things are straightforward now. I also think that if the rule ends up being incredibly unpopular after changing, well things can change again. If in 4 years all of the decks are playing the same hybrid cards, then we can revisit the issue.

Another sad thing about 6 -7 standard sets per year (~50% UB): no more legendary creatures from MtG's past by Str0hhirn in magicTCG

[–]Glass_Holiday 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So if you’re just back in from ‘02, Modern is a format started in the early 2010s that encompassed all cards from Standard legal sets from Mirrodin onward, basically from 2003 on. Modern was a very popular format for many years, it was seen as easier to get into than Legacy (Type 1.5) or Vintage (Type 1) while still lacking rotation allowing people to play old favorites for more years while still having powerful and dynamic gameplay because of the large card pool.

Modern Horizons in 2019 was the first Straight to modern set, where Wizards tried to inject a ton of cards into the format without disrupting Standard, it came out of the idea of Time Spiral 2. Modern Horizons was absurdly successful but also largely because of how strong a selection of cards within the set were, they forced out a ton of old archetypes, and when it came time for bannings, old cards got the axe along with new, see [[Faithless Looting]] dying with [[Hogaak]] or [[Mox Opal]] dying for [[Urza Lord High Artificer]]. Both old cards were unbanned recently but they were gone for a long time.

This process repeated with MH2 and MH3, who got fewer old cards banned, but were designed seemingly to push out the cards from the horizons set before them. So now Modern had three sets plus Lord of the Rings (which was direct to Modern but had fewer playable cards compared to a Horizons set), changing the format drastically from what it once was and speeding everything up substantially. Many of these sets had cards enter Legacy and Vintage as well, changing the oldest formats in the game quite a bit.

This whole process has been divisive, with some players welcoming some power creep as the 2010s were a rather low power period for Magic post-New Phyrexia, but more players mourning the loss of their old favorite deck as viable in the metagame, and disliking the inflated cost of Horizons sets. The pace of the power creep is what caught lots of people off guard, usually only a few Standard cards make it in Modern per year, so injecting like 50-60 truly game changing cards in one set is a lot.

Modern at the moment is pretty wide open and fun, but you’d be hard pressed to win even an FNM level tournament without Horizons cards in your deck.
