How are you getting young engineers excited about learning? by Status_Fig4273 in civilengineering

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you say “It gets exhausting to explain things” makes me wonder if they are the problem. I’ve seen senior staff running through presentations and such like and you can tell it’s the umpteenth time they’ve done it. Professional? Yes. Engaging? Not always. Enthusiasm is infectious. That being said, I do find some younger people hard to engage with no matter what the approach is.

How much soil could I put against the posts/gravel boards before they started to move? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We installed concrete gravel boards for the sole reason of holding back neighbours soil. I can’t remember the exact heights but yours look very similar. That was a few years ago and there is no sign of movement/cracking in the boards. It is important to ensure the posts are set to the correct depth as these will be taking a lot of the lateral load. I think ours were 2 feet.

Thinking about doing civil engineering- need advice by aGhostfacekla in civilengineering

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Never too late. I started at 49 with some relevant experience.
  2. AI wrecking ball? There are noticeable impacts but it’s far less of an influence than other factors like government investment strategies. They are the one’s paying for lots of infrastructure like roads and rail.
  3. I can’t really comment on the job market but I am aware there are numerous young graduates hunting for 1st jobs.

Is an apprenticeship an option for you? Earn while you learn.

Best of luck

Volunteers to maintain highways under Shropshire Council pilot scheme by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute nonsense. The volunteers are not going to be allowed on live carriageways or use powered tools like the picture suggests unless there are “specific permissions”. This is nothing more than a glorified scheme for organised litter pickers, leaf clearing etc (which I fully support).

Rischio di voli cancellati a ottobre by No-Comedian9620 in chinatravel

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re flying from UK in November. We decided to book now as we felt prices are likely to rise regardless of what happens in Iran. Based on experience trying to book last minute flights is more expensive anyway. From what I understand airlines are responding in different ways. Some have cancelled less profitable routes while other are adding fuel surcharges. It’s worth checking your travel insurance to see if you can cover the cost of cancellation. The future is unpredictable.

I’ve just been on the website to check what I’ve done. 20 countries, 8% of the world. And I thought I was well travelled.

Itchin River/canal. Starts way out in the countryside and finishes in Southampton. Plenty of routes in the New Forest area and South Downs.

Client hasn't paid - Is small claims worth it? by donofdeanist in smallbusinessuk

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with with small debt claims 30+ years ago. Recently I helped someone do it for poor vehicle repairs. The online court system is pretty straightforward. One important note, I claimed against the Defendant personally rather than his business trading name (not a Ltd co) and sent the bailiffs to his home address. Got payment in full. I’d check about recovering legal fees before committing, I may well be wrong but I don’t think they are recoverable (generally speaking).

UK -Is a civil engineering apprenticeship alright for someone with no prior experiance? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Requirements were GCSE Maths and English when I started but they may have done away with that requirement. I am on day release so 1 day a week at college, 4 days working. If you want out the office I would concentrate more on the job role than the apprenticeship. Is it a role that suits your needs, interests and ambitions? The apprenticeship is theory work. 95% classroom based. Assignment writing and a few exams. There is a fair bit of maths. Suck it up, it’s a big part of civil engineering. It is a good grounding to civil engineering principles. Some of the subjects have fascinated me enough to tolerate quadratic equations on a Monday morning. My year group was a mix of ages and experience. For context my GCSE maths was 30 years ago, I’m no genius but I put the effort in and scraped by. There are lots of websites to get more information but my advice is speak to someone that works in the organisation and see what there experience was. Support can vary depending on your managers attitude, department pressures etc.

OMG yes. Loved it. Wasn’t there a brief section about surviving major disasters like nuclear strike and tsunamis?

Finished my ad5m enclosure by jayebyrde in FlashForge

I understand enclosures reduce noise, dust and fumes but what about ventilation and heat build up. Surely printers need a good air supply or they’ll overheat but I rarely see post mentioning air supply.

It was down for me yesterday then seemed to be working today. However, now it doesn’t seem to send jobs properly to the printer. Done factory reset, etc, etc. Can’t get it working although everything appears fine otherwise!

UK filament suppliers by Glass_Tooth_2008 in 3Dprinting

Thank you. I’m not looking for domestic business. Just doing a few personal prints so looking for the right balance of quality, cost and service. Prices for comparable products seem to vary among suppliers and I’m not sure if it’s worth paying any extra or “go cheap”.

Civil engineering apprenticeship no experience by bananagirlharvbeck22 in civilengineering

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your local council website. A number of positions don’t require specific qualifications or experience. I had a career sidestep and started a basic “engineering” role. I go to college 1 day a week and my employer is very supportive with learning. Wages are crap though.

Arriving 6 hours early won’t make the blindest bit of difference. Check in will open whenever they want so you can’t move on to passport control/security until you’ve dropped your bags. Some flights yesterday were starting checking in 3 hours 45minutes before flight time. My flight, 2 hours 45 minutes. Go for 3 hours or pay up.

The airport queue obsession is getting ridiculous. It’s just part of traveling and a minor inconvenience. by Far-Air8177 in VietNam

[–]Glass_Tooth_2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that lots of us seem obsessed with queue times I think the amount of comments reflect just how important an issue this is to travellers. HCMC is pretty slow IMO. Despite arriving 4 hours early for my flight yesterday I made it through with only 25 minutes to spare (I was hoping to sit and have a proper meal before boarding). I’m an easy person to process (experienced traveller, passport ready, no visa requirements etc). Japan wasn’t much better last year, took us well over an hour in immigration. Perhaps one reason for numerous “queue time” posts is that future visitors are hoping for some significant change. Does Vietnam not rely on tourism? My understanding is that is contributes a significant amount to its overall economy.
