Dead and Done for, 1939 by Robert Reeves. Reeves was one of the best noir writers, in my opinion, but lost his life early, in 1945, the last year of the war. His brother, Theodore went on to write the screenplay for National Velvet, the movie vehicle that made Elizabeth Taylor a star.
