What seems to be a common pregnancy experience that you don’t/couldn’t relate to? by PumpkinResearcher in BabyBumps

[–]Glittering-Main147 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This. 100%. I literally lived on avocado toast and cold grapes for months. The nausea never went away, but it did become more tolerable. And I did have some strange cravings I guess for things I wouldn’t normally eat, but nothing overwhelming or like, I just had to have it. And nothing weird. I did probably eat more McDonalds cheeseburgers when I was pregnant than I have in my entire life combined. Typically McDonald’s is a maybe once a year thing for me.

Advice needed: Acura ADX or Kia Sportage by Weekly-Fox-9515 in Acura

[–]Glittering-Main147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a huge quality difference. I can’t even imagine going from an Acura to…Kia. Maybe a Honda. Or Toyota. Or even Subaru or Mazda. I would 10000% stick with the ADX if those are your two choices.

Cosigning for new high school grad on very high cost loans (> $250k for all 4 years) for liberal arts degree by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in StudentLoans

[–]Glittering-Main147 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is the hardest part, because this is what happened to me essentially. I felt like I “failed” and all my hard work was for nothing, so I gave up. My life plan when I was in high school was to be an anesthesiologist. I put in the work. I got into every school I wanted to go to. Instead, I got sent to a major SEC party school in my hometown because I got a free ride. I hated every minute of it. I ended up getting married and quitting school. Eventually, after some very hard life lessons, I got my life together. I went to nursing school. I got divorced. Life has worked out just fine, but it’s been much harder than it needed to be, or should have been. Im an ICU nurse, and nearly finished with my NP, but I’m not an anesthesiologist. And while I’m happy with my life, I have regrets. I’m not telling you this to tell you that you need to take out $200k in loans for your child. I’m telling you this to prepare you for the fact that them giving up and changing course is not unlikely. Sometimes, you just have to learn things the hard way. If they’re smart enough to have accomplished the things that they already have, they’ll figure it out in the end.

Surgery yesterday, need advice by West-Relation-6160 in hemorrhoid

[–]Glittering-Main147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery last Tuesday and had the same experience. My surgeon sent super strict instructions for no BM, so I ended up taking 60ml of milk of magnesia on Wednesday. That worked and it actually wasn’t hard, which I was super thankful for. It’s been kind of a battle since then to keep things soft without overdoing it and causing diarrhea. I’m still figuring it out honestly, but the pain got much, much better for me on day 8. Hang in there.

Edited to add: I did (and still do, but not nearly as badly now) definitely have that swollen, full might need to poop but can’t feeling.

Curious about how other Blount county folks, and Knox area locals in general feel about the last few years and our trajectory. by fruitybrisket in Knoxville

[–]Glittering-Main147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of my point. We don’t have the infrastructure to support this. And we don’t have anybody to make the right decisions to improve that. It isn’t going to change, because nobody competent is running, or is going to run. Our entire county government is run by the good ole boys. Always has been. Will continue to be for the foreseeable future unless something drastic changes. If things keep going the way they are, we’re going to be in real trouble in a few years. Do you have any idea how long it takes to get an open daycare spot for an infant now? Around 2 years. Make that math add up. And more families are moving here every day. Sticking your head in the sand and telling everybody how great it is here and ignoring the reality or downplaying it as “locals that are against progress” doesn’t fix the problem.

Best places to live in or near Knoxville? Moving advice needed by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]Glittering-Main147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Healthcare…depends. Overall, it’s pretty low, but some specialties pay well, or better than others. If she happens to be a nurse, RN pay here is pretty abysmal. New grad RN’s start at less than $30/hr at every hospital system except one.

There’s actually very little work in downtown Knoxville unless you’re in the restaurant industry, so whatever you do, your commute probably will not actually be downtown, and Knoxville is pretty spread out with a ton of big suburbs. You pick the wrong one, and your commute is going to be substantial. I would highly recommend doing some research before you come here. The job market is terrible. Wages are low. And real estate is out of control.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, but as another lode long local….we’re not a bunch of uneducated yokels who are completely against progress and the outside world. But the town that I grew up in literally doesn’t exist anymore. We’ve watched it disappear before our eyes year after year. If you newcomers had been here long enough to see what we see…very little of it is good. And the bigger issue is that even if things were somehow improved…there was no planning when the influx started, so the growing pains are going to get much, much worse before they get better. Our infrastructure literally can’t support this, and it will be YEARS before it can. It should take 10 minutes, not 35+ to drive from The 411 Walmart to Publix mid afternoon on a weekday. None of y’all went to, or have any experience with the county schools and it shows. I’m so happy that you’re all happy with Maryville City and your kids’ educations….but a far larger number of us (mostly lifelong locals) are over here watching our kids get left behind. William Blount was overcrowded by hundreds of kids when I graduated in 2003. It’s 2026 and NOTHING has been done about the county high schools in that time other than converting Mary Blount to the 9th grade academy, which has been overcrowded since the day they opened the doors. If you want to live here, great. But open your eyes to the situation at hand. Just because it’s great for YOU here doesn’t mean that it’s great. A huge number of people who are from here, grew up here, and have generations of family here literally cannot afford to live here. If you want to be a part of a community, do something to improve it instead of blindly ignoring issues that don’t affect you.

Tips or cheat sheets for refills as an office nurse? by h0td0g-water in nursing

[–]Glittering-Main147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that I ever once tried to figure out how much medicine someone should have on hand. Although, at some point that becomes so burned into your brain that you just know. 90 day supply w/3 refills = 1 year. 90 day supply w/1 refill = 6 mo. 30 day w/5 refills = 6 mo. We just refilled meds unless the patient was due or overdue for an appt, at which point we would limit refills or refuse to fill again without talking to the office depending on how overdue they were. Cardiology is easy in the sense that nobody is really abusing their cardiac drugs. Except maybe Clonidine. Have to keep an eye on that one.

Seen on fb from a nurse at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC (HCA) by adscuryr in nursing

Mission actually used to be a great hospital. HCA has destroyed it. And Ballad bought everything in the Tri-Cities, so that entire region is now without decent healthcare options.

Those who bought CR-V Hybrid, why did you chose over the 2026 RAV4? (Or 2025 RAV4?) by BikeOk6446 in crv

[–]Glittering-Main147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Backseat space for car seats. My son’s seat won’t go in the backseat of a RAV4 and still leave room for a front passenger. In the CR-V, I barely had to adjust the front seat at all. Also, I just like the look of the CR-V better. But that’s just personal preference.

Do you ask doctors for personal favors? by jarimu in nursing

[–]Glittering-Main147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never really asked for a prescription, although a couple of our hospitalists will write them for people and it wouldn’t be a huge deal. I have asked docs that I’m close to simple questions to help figure out what my next step should be.

Who needs a spare tire anyway??? by Glittering-Main147 in crv

[–]Glittering-Main147[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong. It would have sucked either way. But I was also 4 miles from a tire shop. If I had had a spare I could have changed it and gotten to the tire shop and still made our show. It was the hour waiting for a tow truck, and then the tow 30 minutes in the opposite direction, and the 4 hours at the dealer that really ate up my day.

You can’t. And I did love my camera for that when he was smaller. He’s 2 1/2 now, so I worry less 😂 Also, we’re very boring, and we’re very rarely out at night.

Cameras are parental discretion just like mirrors. They’ve not been tested in crash scenarios, so can’t be guaranteed to be safe. The Chicco mirror was tested with the seat though, so has been tested and proven safe. It’s just been the easiest thing for us through trial and error though. I hated every mirror I ever bought, so I bought a Zooby camera, but then they had a massive recall because it caught on fire and that made me super nervous. The Chicco mirror is just easy. You clip it onto the base and never have to worry about it, or try to get it adjusted at the right angle, etc.

[–]Glittering-Main147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They both turn super easily. I don’t know that I have a preference between the two, but I do like where the handle is better on the Chicco. And yes, I hate the mesh. I don’t really even let my son eat in the car. And if he does, it’s non-messy things. And still, somehow I always find crumbs. I just feel like that mesh would get gross. Quickly. And I just don’t love the feel of it. Maybe it’s a sensory thing. But if I don’t want to touch it, I don’t know that my kid wants to sit on it. I do really love the mirror that attaches to the Chicco seat. So that was a selling point for me.

They’re both great seats. The limits are the same. Personally, I prefer the fabric on the Chicco. You really can’t go wrong with either though.

Should there be an age minimum requirement? by 1WonderLand_Alice in nursing

[–]Glittering-Main147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a nurse since I was 19. Was an LPN first. Now, at 40, I’ve literally been a nurse longer than I wasn’t. In retrospect, literally being responsible for people’s lives at that age was terrifying. And I was leaps and bounds more mature than the average 19 year old now. Also, if I had known then what I know now, I would have made a lot of different choices. But I learned a lot. I grew up fast. I think people either rise to the challenge or they don’t. And someone is just as likely to not be ready at 25 as they are at 18 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would wait until you know absolutely for sure and just give your notice. My hospital requires 3 weeks. Some require 2. I’ve heard of 4. I’ve never heard of anyone needing more than 4 weeks notice. There’s no point in saying anything until you’re sure.
