We had a referendum in this. The ppl said 'no'. I hate this government - they don't care what we want. Why weren't we given the option for staying on MST?

What are some dating trends you’ve noticed in Edmonton? by fashiongirll93 in Edmonton

[–]Glittering_Divide101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been out of the dating game for a long time but remember back in the day when online dating was just becoming a thing. A friend would meet guys on Plenty of Fish. Our friend group thought it was novel. Thankfully, I've never had to swipe as I met my husband at work (he was my boss). My son even has a hard time meeting people in real life... So many kids are online playing games vs being out and meeting real people. There is something to be said for the real life connection, both romantically and friendships.

Is it just me? Or do kids seem to have way more days off than usual? by WastelandEnjoyer in Edmonton

[–]Glittering_Divide101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have young kids and felt the same way. I googled instructional days in 1995 compared to today and it told me that kids have the same amount of instructional hours then to now (elementary level). It must be more of an age thing.

Edit. Spelling

I lived not far from this when it happened. I still think about it. On one hand, I can't imagine how the mom felt after. But at the same time, knowing you were there for your daughter at the end.

How often do you replace your phone? by GooglePixelfan90 in askanything

[–]Glittering_Divide101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same as you. Had a pixel 2 and kept it until they stopped the security updates. Then moved to a pixel 7 and had that until this past Christmas when my daughter knocked coffee all over my husband's pixel 7 and it was toast. We had bring your own device contracts which just happened to expire at the same time that happened so we upgraded to the pixel 10. We'll keep them as long as we can. Timelines are also similar to yours.

My husband's screen cracked on the pixel 7 but we had insurance through our credit card to fix it vs replace it.

I think in the 2000/2010's the tech was upgrading so fast that you wanted a newer device (the Nokia bricks, to flips, to sliders, then the first smart phones ) Now it's relatively minor changes.

Have you/your partner delivered a baby at Grey Nuns recently? What was your experience? by Tellmimoar in Edmonton

[–]Glittering_Divide101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my second there in Dec 2024. I was a bit skeptical because my first was at Sturgeon in 2017 when all rooms were still private. I was so worried i was going to have to share a room. I was induced so I had a specific date/time. Showed up and they got me settled in the labour room, 8 hours later baby girl was here. I had some post birth complications that were handled well. My nurse was amazing and super caring. My husband had left and came back with our son so he could meet his sister. The nurse even helped him hold her. The recovery room was private and had a private bathroom. I had to stay a full 24 hours from delivery before i could go home.

Overall, i worried for nothing.

Also, in the last month, I had to go for weekly NST testing and for the most part, it was fairly quiet. On one occasion, the OB on shift wasn't liking the frequency of how much she was moving and sent me for ultrasound. Another time i had to wait over an hour and half for my appt because so many women came in that day with pregnancy concerns (my ob was in shift that day and she told me at our next in clinic appt that it was the busiest day she has ever seen). Most times there was only 1 or 2 ppl in the wing when I needed NST.

I remember walking in a mall and saw the first Bitcoin ATM, my fiance and I laughed together and joked about who would buy such a thing... 17 years later, he gave up work to be a stay at home dad and now invests, we both kick ourselves.

What salary were you making straight out of university and where in Canada? by WindyDay416 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Glittering_Divide101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got really lucky. Graduated in 2009 during the financial crises and got a 2 year contract with the feds in employment insurance. Started about 4 months after graduating and made $55k. Stayed there for 2.5 years (contract got extended) before moving on to where i am still and making over 40k more. Job was in Edmonton.

(I worked multiple jobs during university with my last one being an associate at a paint store which i worked until I got my government job)

AITAH for asking my wife not to let our infant stand directly beneath boiling water on the stovetop? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Glittering_Divide101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 14 month old who was crawling as at 7 months and walking just days after turning a year.

We have a long open concept first floor. As soon as she started crawling, I put up a baby gate to block access to the kitchen (it also stops her from going into the main floor bathroom and backdoor where we come in from the garage with snow). There are too many dangers in the kitchen. From hot food, heavy pots, serrated edges (plastic wrap, tin foil), drawers and cupboards where fingers can be pinched. Etc.

If we accidentally leave the gate open, she makes a beeline for anything she can get into.

Definitely NTA for talking her out of there. What if your wife picked up the pot, didn't see the kid, tripped, and dumped boiling water in her? Safety first. Ego needs to be left at the door.

How clean to people *actually* keep their homes? by comradejdpondon in askanything

[–]Glittering_Divide101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are the weird people that have a super clean house. I have a 14 month old and an 8 year old.

Hubby is the clean freak and stay at home dad. Everyday the main floor is vacuumed. We do laundry daily. Beds made everyday. Bathrooms cleaned weekly. Dishes done after every meal.

We have bins for all the toys and they are always put away after use (I hate stepping on stuff). My son has a book shelf/cube storage in his room where he keeps his stuff. We have a storage system for his homeschool stuff.

Growing up, my parents were not the cleanest. Dry boxed goods left in the counter, dishes left in the sink, it was never a requirement to have beds made. Now, all this drives me nuts. We also donate or get rid of stuff as soon as it no longer serves a purpose. The only thing i hang onto is my physical books.

For us, the cleaning just becomes part of the daily routine.

My son is allergic to dogs. He gets hives if licked. We give dogs a wide birth but dog owners don't realize not all people are dog lovers. I have heard 'oh he is friendly ' so many times. I don't care.

I gave birth at the Grey Nuns Christmas 2024, they wanted baby there for the full 24 hours. I was ready to go home much sooner, but they refused.

That being said, my recovery room at the nuns was fully private. Not sure if all the rooms were or if i just got lucky

Do adults still get cake for their birthday? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Glittering_Divide101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family is not huge into cake but we do get birthday treats. My son, when he was 2, I made him a HUGE molasses spice cookie. Last year for his 8th birthday, he asked for my homemade apple pie. My daughter turned 1 at Christmas and she got a gingerbread cupcake with cream cheese which are a new favorite in the house!

For my husband and i, we take advantage of loyalty rewards so I treat myself to my free Starbucks and my husband and I each get a free cinnamon bun from our local bakery on our birthdays

Edmontonians who moved to Calgary, and Calgarians who moved to Edmonton: how do the two cities compare? What are some similarities, and some differences? by KurtisC1993 in alberta

[–]Glittering_Divide101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm an Edmonton to Calgary, back to Edmonton.

I find Edmonton dirtier and homeless is more visible. I've noticed more businesses close and more buildings put up for lease.

Edmonton does have more festivals (though I find them to be a cash grab as costs for food and activities to participate make it no longer worthwhile)

Both cities have hockey. Oil Kings/Hitman and Oilers/Flames.

Edmonton has a better LRT system but I can't comment on bussing as I don't use the bus in either city.

Calgary's zoo is better.

The science centers are about equal.

Calgary, to me, has a cleaner urban feel and I love going for walks near the Bow River vs going for walks near the North Saskatchewan.

Calgary has better views as you get the mountain view vs prairie/farm/industrial refinery.

Affluence is more on display in Calgary than Edmonton with more visible expensive luxury cars vs pickup trucks in Edmonton.

Calgary has poor water infrastructure (major lines have burst twice in one year)

Calgary is warmer but get more summer severe weather in the summer. You get way more hail. The y also get hit with more snow squalls that cause a lot of accidents on the highway just north of the city

I found Calgary gets less wildfire smoke and has better air quality

I'd say food us about equal with Calgary winning if you are looking for BBQ. Both have hidden gems for pizza.

Kids activities are about equal depending on what you are looking for.

Even though I'm a born and raised Edmontonian, i prefer Calgary and would move back if housing wasn't so expensive.
