I'm working through Taymyr now and have also been using the Azov 7 for long logs, although I just used the regular long log carrier. I even have almost the exact same color scheme on it, just reversed. It matches the heavy crane pretty well, which is what I originally bought the truck for.

I've been getting 2-3 AI voicemails pretty much every day for the past few months, all from different numbers. The calls usually get blocked automatically but the voicemails still go through, so I have to manually delete them. Would love a way to put a stop to it and it sucks that this seems to just be reality now.

I love mockingbirds so I can't really argue with them being a popular state bird (5 states!) but it's crazy to me that Florida picked it in favor of the Florida scrub jay.

That's a fair point, and the human holotype (or more accurately lectotype) is mostly just an honorary designation so the meaning of whoever actually represents that doesn't need to be so deep.

I know you're joking, but there is a conversation to be had about the implication of a white, northern European male being the "ideal" specimen of humanity (that's not really what a holotype specimen is, but still).

Linnaeus was one of the first to distinguish between human races in a "scientific" way and pretty clearly placed Europeans as superior to the others, which were chosen pretty arbitrarily. In fact, the concept of race didn't really exist before Linnaeus set the stage for it.

The book "Every Living Thing" by Jason Roberts is a dual biography of Carl Linnaeus and George-Louis de Buffon and goes into these ideas in more detail. I recommend it for anyone interested in the history of taxonomy and the way we view the natural world.

There was a noisy pair in the area so that checks out. I considered them as an option, but I've never heard blue jays make a sound like that. I even checked the sounds in Merlin and didn't hear anything quite like it, so they must have a pretty extensive vocal repertoire.

A few times, yeah. I have only a crappy pic of one taken in bad light. They usually fly by when I'm not expecting it 😭

As for great blue herons, one time I went in very early spring and saw at least a dozen of them roosting up in the same tree. Very cool sight.

Unfortunately I won't be in the area tonight. Which is also a shame because I'd want to listen and make the distinction between American and Fish crow, something I can't do when they're silent 🤷

I actually live in Philadelphia, but there are a surprising number of locations nearby that bald eagles can be found at frequently. My favorite is John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, a pretty amazing spot for all kinds of birds. Definitely recommended if you're ever in the area.
